@@CeltiesSin eh, that's just how some groups play out tbh. Same thing at my LGS, there's one guy who just constantly ends up being archenemy. Just good deck building mixed with solid piloting, not much you can do about it 😂.

In case you were wondering Josh’s last turn took 12 minutes and 55 seconds, 7 minutes and 10 seconds being Mizzix’s Mastery. The episode is 1:02:09 long, meaning that Josh’s turn took roughly 21% of the ENTIRE EPISODE.

I like how from Olivia’s perspective she left the table before things were going to get back, and when she did, two people were dead, and the last one remaining had drawn every card in his deck. Then she comes back like “it’s time to win”.
If i had a Nickle for every time Josh Lee Kwai got milled out by an Alter of Dementia, I'd have two Nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice.

Came for this comment and was not disappointed.
To be fair, it was a different situation; in the ad he was not annoyed at the other players taking a long time to do stuff, and was simply acknowledging he was not able to do anything as he was tapped out. And I'm sure he'd be fine if a tapped out player sat back and let him (and the other not-tapped-out players) do stuff until they could next interact.
I was hoping he would have taken the Raycons out to find out he lost. Lol
The fact that JLK's face isn't photoshopped on the alter of dementia art is the biggest missed opportunity in game knights history.

This is why if you copy multiple Explosions, point at least some of the card draw at the person you're killing. Otherwise this is bound to happen.

@Jack Napier I disagree very much, maybe its what is wrong with that color combo in Strixhaven but those cards already existed before Strix, and Strix gives us awesome cards in other colors and for other decks. Not to mention a fun lore/story

My brain has rattled together ad ideas for different color pair colleges or tri color colleges being like AP classes harder majors. The extended universe of colleges could be very very deep in mtg.

Black Red automotive, or demonic engineering?
Green Red is Athletic freaks or military??
White Green is idfk lol.
Blue Black is space and time? Astrology or something.
Idk lol. There's not really another main 5 studied that the schools from strixhaven aren't already covering (Art, Math, Literature, History, Science) and my ideas are loosely based on what the other color pairs already touch on in lore.

@@chrispy6953 If we're going at it from the Strixhaven "the differences are more important than the similarities" approach, to differentiate it from Ravnica, I'd say it's more:
* White-Blue: Self-Restraint vs Going too far to achieve aims - Psychology (most psycholgists agree both are needed sometimes, and being stuck at either end results in being too uptight or being too reckless, but those are the two ends)
* Blue-Black: Nuturing skills/knowledge/etc vs Exploitation of those things - Social Sciences (pretty obvious when applied to people in a society)
* Black-Red: Long-Term Earnings vs Short-Term Profit- Economics (pretty obvious)
* Red-Green: Changing Impulse vs Ingrained Instinct - Medical school (how different doctors diagnose things)
* Green-White: Nature vs Civilization - Geography (the natural geography of the world vs civilization's impact in terms of state divisions, etc)

As someone who just stumbled into Magic. I want to thank this channel for the incredible directing, editing, and animation of these game knights. The videos are informative in a fun and interesting way for a new player. I feel like I can follow along even though I have no experience. Thank you! This was some insane gameplay. Some real high tier shit. Olivia really busted my sides with “I love when you make decks smarter than you” and then the amazing conclusion. Also the silver quill deck killing someone with sign in blood was so flavorful

Oh, true! Wow, that was a misplay that legitimately changed the course of the game.
And Jimmy Vesuva'd a land that came in at the same time, seems to be a common mistake.
Also he copied Thermal Flux twice and didn't change the targets. The second and third one would be countered because the target is not legal (it wasn't a nonsnow permanent).
Wouldn't the copies be on the stack already when he makes the token? If he is resolving them they should all be on the stack, meaning they are already cast. That means the token of his commander shouldn't be getting pumped either.
@@Daz1One for Flux you could just say Snow-unsnow-snow or pick 3 diff ones, it was a choice that had no effect really so he just picked the same one

This episode was amazing. Olivia represented Silverquill very well getting herself in the spotlight with all the talking. Jimmy had to math his way out of a dire situation as expected of Quandrix, and Josh with the crazier Prismari turns.
And Kat was a really good example of what Witherbloom is all about: dying.

Sometimes I think his decks are a little 'too' focused, especially on the set-up; he often spends the first few turns doing something...but then just keeps doing it. Which is probably because his decks are tooooo loaded with those set-up cards, meaning it's all he has to do (the wheel hand he showed kinda shows this). I didn't actually see ANY spell he'd cheat with his commander, whereas I'd expect a deck like that to be running 16-20, along with 20-30 cheaper instants/sorceries (which includes every ramp instant/sorcery less than/equal to 3cmc).
@@andrewsparkes8829 Yeah the deck he built this week was absolutely terrible. He's not even playing a single removal spell in the entire list aside from 1 broken bond, which is sorcery speed enchantment/artifact removal. It's so bad.
I love watching someone play solitaire for half a game and then totally getting dunked on in the end. It's almost poetic.
Seeing the reactions when Alter of Dementia was played made it worth it

And it's flavourful as well... The prismari player is making one hell of a spectacule and then the silverquill at the end kills him with a: "Well... actually..."
I love how it was Prismari Command (with that amazing animation) that let Josh start the engine for that absolute value. It was like he really called in the best and most powerful mages of the Prismari house, and they released the power of their magic. So much synergy and flavour to the deck!!

I like that with only 3 cards in the library and Josh's Jori En out there, Sign in Blood was enough to win, unless Josh could win a single card or his first card killed Jori En.
I can’t even imagine how long it must have took just to storyboard the five colleges prior to filming, let alone write, film, and edit that sequence. Simply incredible!
The one time Jimmy gets more mana than multiple Game Knight episodes combined, he didn't even get to play a single turn with them.

A lot, but I don't think this is the reason we did not see him. He has been on the show plenty of times before so I am not so sure WoTC have a say in the guest list. In fact, from what I remember they said WoTC sponsors them for early access to their videos to check that they are all family-friendly since it is their game. They said so in their TWD secret lair video.

@@genericweeb3816 I believe he was meant to choose targets for every card before resolving any of the effects of those cards. One of those effects created a creature token after resolving it, so that token didn't exist to be targeted beforehand.
That aside, we all make mistakes, and since it wasn't a super competitive match it's alright since it seemed everybody was having a good time.

That is possible but unlikely since it wasn’t a spell but an ability and the sublime epiphany was already in his graveyard
The thing is, the fetch should have saved him. All of Josh’s Mizzix’s Mastery spells needed valid targets as they were put on the stack, so the Accelerate shouldn’t have been able to give the copy of Veyran haste, because that copy didn’t exist yet.

TL;DR during JLK's final turn, all the spells from Mizzix's Mastery should have been cast at once, Accelerate could not have targeted the Veyran copy, and Jimmy would have lived.
I apologise for the length of this comment: I did not have time to write a shorter one.
I believe that during the penultimate turn of the game (lasting from 43:26 to 56:26) the Mizzix's Mastery and its consequences were not handled properly. The problem stems from the fact that in the episode, the copies created by Mizzix's Mastery are shown as being cast in sequence (with the next one being cast after the previous one has resolved) whereas in actuality they are all cast during the resolution of Mizzix's Mastery. This error has several consequences, not all of which have a trivial impact on the game's outcome.
Most relevantly, Accelerate could not have targeted the token copy of Veyran, because Accelerate's target is chosen before the Sublime Epiphany (which creates the token copy) resolves. Thus the token would not have had haste, and Jimmy would not have died to it attacking (maybe JLK would have then Explosion'ed Jimmy, but then Kat would have survived).
Likewise, the token copy of Veyran did not see any of the copies become cast (because it was not created until well after Mizzix's Mastery finished resolving) and so it would have been significantly smaller, only triggering off of the Fury Storm, the copy of Fury Storm, and the copies of Prismari Command created by the Fury Storms (and some other spells after combat). Irrespective of its size however, it would not have had haste, rendering the issue of its exact size somewhat moot.
Thirdly, JLK did not know which cards we would draw off of e.g. Opt at the time when he was selecting targets for the spells he cast off of Mizzix's Mastery.
Additionally, all of Birgi's triggers should have resolved before the first copy created by Mizzix's Mastery resolves, instead of in between the copies, but that's a much less impactful mistake.
Finally, JLK did in fact control his commander while casting Jeska's Will, and so he could have chosen both modes had he so desired (the fact that he no longer controlled his commander as Jeska's Will resolved is inconsequential).
Below is my overly detailed account of what I believe should have happened, in order.
1. Mizzix's Mastery begins resolving.
2. All instant and sorcery cards in JLK's graveyard are exiled, then copied.
3. JLK casts whichever of the copies he wants to, in whichever order he pleases. In so doing he chooses targets for them. The copies go onto the stack and become cast.
4. Birgi triggers the appropriate number of times, taking into account Veyran's static ability. These triggers do not yet go onto the stack however, because we are in the middle of resolving a spell and no player receives priority at this point in time.
5. Mizzix's Mastery exiles itself and finishes resolving.
6. Whichever copies JLK did not cast cease to exist as a state-based action.
7. All of Birgi's triggers go onto the stack, in whichever order JLK chooses (although they are all indistinguishable).
8. JLK receives priority.
The stack now looks like this: on top are all of Birgi's triggers, and below those are whichever copies JLK elected to cast, in the reverse order from the one they were cast in. Their targets are fixed, having been selected by JLK in step 3.

Honestly watching Josh just go off and then make a big misplay while doing it for 40 mins soured my enjoyment of the show.
Not to mention that Jimmy copied a permanent with Vesuva that was entering the battlefield at the same time as it (not that Jimmy got another turn.)
Nice analysis, I totally understand what could have been done. I feel actually that there is a mistake around that stack, but Josh actually said (47:44) something like he has to put those spells in order and choose targets for each since you cannot change those while they are on stack. And then plays like he does not follow what he said as he seem to cast it one after another.
Yeah it had a huge effect on the game. At least one of Jimmy and Kat would not have died that turn, as explosion would be the only spell to kill anyone when the token couldn't attack.

RULES INFRACTION! around the 50:30 minute mark:
Josh needs to select the targets of all his spells when they are put on to the stack by Mizzix's Mastery, so his Accelerate copy could not target his Veyran token to give it haste as that was not on the battlefield when the Accelerate copy was put on the stack.
Also the Veyran token does not trigger Magecraft from the Mizzix's copies as those copies were created and put on the stack before the Veyran token was on the battlefield.
edit - Also modes are selected when the copies are placed on the stack as well so Jeska's Will could have both modes selected as Josh had his commander out when the copy was made.

Doesn't he also target an opponent with the Jesk'a Will that is phased out with Teferi's protection, which gives hime the mana he needs to start that combo?
I believe he targets Kat not Olivia (who is phased out). Though as others have pointed another rules infraction occurs when Jimmy makes Vesuva a copy of Temple of the False God, which he could not do as both lands enter together. Definitely not as game warping as the Mizzix's sequence though.
Poor Jimmy should have had his big turn with all his lands :(

All he had to do was aim the card draw at the person he was killing with explosion so he doesn't end up milling, there was no reason to draw those cards, you discard all of them anyway.
I know! In my personal commander groups I never see anyone die from mill. Somehow it feels like a theme on this show

Josh couldn’t kill jimmy with the token copy. He had to put all the copies on the stack at once, meaning he had to select Accelerate’s target prior to the token existing from sublime epiphany.
Nice catch! Also I posted above that josh ended his turn with 3 cards but I don't think he drew off of the delayed draw from thermal flux. Probably wouldn't change the game but if he had drawn a free/1 Mana counter it could have stopped the altar. But of course he would only have two cards in library and sign in blood would have needed it on josh's turn.
