I saw Roy again last night at Kenyon Hall in West Seattle. He sang this song and many others. ROY YOU GIVE ME HOPE to STRUGGLE for CHANGE in these troubled times
I hope that OWS will adopt this song as the anthem of the rest of us....the 99%! Thank you, Roy, for stepping up to the plate & singing for the majority!
Great song from a great CD! When the corrupt corporations and their political lackeys get us down, we need to realize that "The Greatest Threat to Democracy is Hypocrisy! The Greatest Threat to Hypocrisy is Democracy! Seek Truth! Speak Truth!" Tim McMullen. Thanks, Roy, for consistently seeking and speaking truth to power and truth to people.
As an active member of Occupy Atlanta, Roy nails it. Thank you, Roy, for this anthem. We need you right now at the Glen Iris occupation. We're camped at the home of a family CHASE bank is trying to foreclose on after a predatory loan was given to the grandmother. When the grandmother died, the family discovered the loan. Over $300,000 (with late fees now $415,000) on a home worth $150,000. Home in the family for over 50 yrs. All the family wants is to refinance. Bring your family and genius.
I love this song so much: it's realistic to the nature of enacting massive change and the difficulties that are bored by taking up the task, yet continues to look to the reward way down the line as the inspiration to perservere. This song and the movement, I think, have an energy reminiscent of the several social movements that have come before them. An excellent job.
I LOVE IT!! Whenever you and Melanie collaborate on a song, there's never a question it will be wonderful! Once again, you manage to suck out the marrow and put it to music. I like watching the people behind you! 0:54 There's the guy on stage behind you dancing with his sign. 2:10 I swear the woman in green stripes checks you out! @NodeofServer, that's what happens at these events. They call "mic check!" You speak a few words at a time. Everyone repeats them. That way everyone understands.
@rpsomerton i can attest that i was there- i'm the girl in the lower right with the video camera in the beginning. i actually have the footage on our Occupy video. :D nice job, roy. -lauren
Roy is right - we can't really blame Obama - a society and political establishment cannot be radically altered by individuals - we need to change attitudes from the ground up. Neil degrasse Tyson was asked what if he waspresident: "Our government doesn’t work - not because we have dysfunctional politicians, but because we have dysfunctional voters...my goal, wouldn’t be to lead a dysfunctional electorate, but to bring an objective reality to the electorate so it could choose the right leaders"
This is a wonderful piece of work, Roy. Would you mind uploading the lyrics to make this more of a singalong? In fact, this song is worthy of a treatment like "Born Again American" though it need not be quite as comprehensive. If there's anything I might do to MOVE it ONward, let me know.
We need a song about the lack of progressivism and equality in today's society! If anyone can do it, you can. At the Republican debates people have cheered over things that are morbidly wrong on three separate occasions. The "let him die" remark, the booing of a gay soldier who is on active deployment serving his country and the idea that the jobless are completely responsible for their joblessness. Something is wrong in a country when the 400 richest people are wealthier than the bottom 150M
(chorus) (bridge) We got to hope and cry work until we die We got to plan and fail spend the night in jail We got to really get pissed, resist and raise a fist We got to try to revolutionize We got to plead and need suffer guaranteed We got to sweat, no doubt get the vote out We got to howl, yell, raise a lot of hell We got to educate and organize Keep our eyes on the prize
Since I couldn't find the lyrics anywhere, I transcribed what I heard. Had to do it in multiple comments because of the character count limit. Feel free to make corrections.
(verse 4) So asking any president to make fundamental change, that's our mistake We've got to be a giant awakening from its slumber We know the moral arc of the universe is bending ever better, never worse almost like the human race rehearsing for its big number (chorus) And the change will come, the change will come but it won't be free And the change will come, the change will come from you and me
(chorus) (verse 3) Elizabeth Cady Stanton never saw A woman's right to vote become law But women everywhere now know The awesome soul She carried Stonewalling didn't settle any fight There's been a lot of stonewalling since that night But one more state just recognized the right of people to be married
(verse 2) You know that civil rights didn't fall to us the moment Rosa Parks stepped on that bus So many fought and died for racial justice before and after And suddenly a ray of hope appears but only after years and years and years and only 'cause of blood and sweat and tears and yes, even laughter
Hope and change is what you voted for but looking at you now I know that you're wishing that your vote did something more to move it forward Hoping that your nation would be free from the hands of ignorance and greed but you know the slogan always needed one more word (chorus) Hope, struggle and change Hope, struggle and change, There's trouble and danger on the road to justice Going to keep on hoping, going to keep my eyes open and the change will come, the change will come but it won't be easy
...love the way the Bus passed in the background...just as you sang the line about Rosa Parks....I call it a Good Omen...
I saw Roy again last night at Kenyon Hall in West Seattle. He sang this song and many others. ROY YOU GIVE ME HOPE to STRUGGLE for CHANGE in these troubled times

@RoyZimmerman It sounds flawless. I don't blame him for thinking it was a green screen.

Hi Roy! You rock.
Reminds me of Pete Seeger - an anthem for a new movement. Just perfect!
My generations Woody Guthrie!!!! You're awesome Roy!!!
Excellent!
I understand the music he does now. This was 7 years ago when we had a good President. Not understanding his issue back then.
This is TERRIFIC! Thank you so much!
Very inspiring!!! Another brilliant masterpiece!

Pure awsome :! :D

Do you have a shot you can use instead of the one with the Fedex truck?
Love this video, BTW!
If you want to see green screen, look at his video for "This Machine".
@grrgrrl Hi Lauren - thanks for being there!
his videos always make me want to eat pancakes

1:21 did you plan that?!
(chorus)
(bridge)
We got to hope and cry
work until we die
We got to plan and fail
spend the night in jail

man thats one masterful protest song
Pessimism of the mind, optimism of the heart.
(verse 2)
You know that civil rights didn't fall to us

So many fought and died for racial justice
before and after
And suddenly a ray of hope appears

Isn't this pretty low for you, vocally?
Sounds great, either way.
Bring on the lyrics!!
For hope and change check out JusticeDemocrats.com.
Hope and change indeed. And here I thought I voted for a progressive.
Hope and change is what you voted for
but looking at you now I know that you're
wishing that your vote did something more
to move it forward
Hoping that your nation would be free
from the hands of ignorance and greed
but you know the slogan always needed
one more word
(chorus)
Hope, struggle and change
Hope, struggle and change,
There's trouble and danger
on the road to justice
Going to keep on hoping,
going to keep my eyes open
and the change will come, the change will come
but it won't be easy
