- In this video I talk about just a few questions that are commonly asked about these cars, and address some of the more popular comments and opinions that are often voiced on forums and social media. Forgive me if this video is not 100% coherent, as I made at 330am. Lol thanks for watching!

Every officer I've talked to seem to love the Charger.
I briefly spoke with a local police officer today on the way home (No, I did not get a ticket!). They were driving a Vic. I asked if they had driven any of the other cars that their jurisdiction owns. That officer said that they MUCH preferred to drive the Charger - said it was much better to drive in inclement weather as well.
Michael Miller For a RWD car, these things are great in the snow. That electronic traction control is a very nice and works well with good snow tires
@@wjyeI vouch for this aswell
I just picked up a 2013 charger rt police. The car is a monster. I love it. And the people that rag on the charger just dont own one. Great video bro.
The R/T and Pursuit are two separate models.
I love dodge charger i dont give a damn when they says is car only for cops. These people who says that are obnoxious and scumbags.
I just purchased a 2015 pursuit hemi awd, great car easy to work on. Bought as a project the engine has 19000 hours on it and only 5000 of those are moving so the motor needs some love but runs good so far. These cars are bulletproof compared to any of the turbo cars that are used these days. I would definitely recommend.
D Money They’re very decent cars with a great drivetrain. I’d say they’re pretty reliable.
Spot on. I've patrolled in quite a few chargers and crown vics and you're 100% accurate. Even had a 2019 ford interceptor utility and turned it in to go back to a 2017 charger. Charger is by far my favorite
Awesome man! Stay safe out there in your Charger!
@@wjye thanks man I’m glad I discovered your channel
@@mattcox3373 thanks I appreciate it! Id love to put out some new content, I’ve just been so busy. Hopefully soon I’ll be putting out some new videos. I’ve still got the Charger and it’s about time for the 4 year review! Lol
i have a 15 awd that was not fleet, cut muffler and resonators out kept factory tips, gotta admit its not having issues at 100k fun as hell to drive!
Keep making videos bro your car is tuff, can’t wait to see you build
I love mine, looks just like yours, an I have 198 thousand miles on it, I have driven across country 7 times, an many time from Southport NC To Kansas. No mechanical issues at all .ZERO
the charger police cars are great if you ask me, they have issues because they have been used in service and it depends on how they were used but mostly they are dependable and the reason the police gave them up was because the raise in budget and the rotation in new cop cars cause ya know they budget goes up all the time and they get all the new stuff but as far as issues they aren’t really issues to panic on, they are very durable and can get you to point A to Z quickly and these cars haul tail, I’m tryin to get this 2015 between now and next week wish me luck and I’m definitely gonna look into the camshaft and lifters and everything you said lol thanks for the feedback bro
Did you get the car? How did it go?
Great video, thanks
most old cop cars are pretty good. i had a old diplomat, dropped a 360 in it, and it was a fine sleeper. had the caprice 9c1, and the vic p71. all of them were reliable and cheap. the most fun car was the diplomat, but the p71 had the best manners. looking at a 2016 awd hemi, they look pretty neat, and still low key.
I have a 2017 dodge charger pursuit v8 great looking cop car but really expensive. Spend alot on gas but I love this car. People on the street always tell me how nice it looks. Runs fast .
Solid! My Charger was pretty decent on fuel if you kept your foot out of it. The MDS system works pretty well on the highway.
Great video good looking car. I have a 2009 P71 but I’m thinking about getting a 2014 Caprice or the Charger but my wife wants me to keep the Vic so we will see . But great video people should not talk about cars Tht they know nothing about I’m with u on tht.
Yep, my previous car before the Charger was an 08 P71 and the Charger was quite a step up. Good luck!
Great video! I’ve been on Facebook market shopping these cars here in Chicago IL.. they are super affordable.. I’ve watched all your review videos at least twice now! And it won’t be the last! Do you still have this charger? Wats your mileage and how’s she running
Still have the car! 171k miles and running strong, no issues except a few creaks and groans from wearing suspension components and I think the AC needs a recharge. Engine and transmission and everything else is still great!
@@wjye good to here seems like a strong car... what about your engine and idle hrs are they high?
@@wjye ??
@@tdgjojo7850 sorry, I didn’t see this comment previously. Car has about 5900 total engine hours and about 2800idle hours. Car has 2000 idle hours when I purchased it
The lifter and cam issues were addressed in the 2009+ hemi's. Engine was totally reworked/reengineered which is why the extra 30hp over the previous hemi's.
I wish that were the case. The 2006 to 2008 hemis didn’t have camshaft/lifter failures. The cam and lifter failures are almost specific to the redesigned 2009+ Eagle Hemis. The 2011-2014 Chargers seem to suffer the most, I don’t hear about it very much with the 2015 and newer Hemis tho. From my research, the issue affects all the hemi engines, but it is more of an issue on the Police model cars that spent a lot of time idling.
@@wjye the newest lifters were used in new mid-2019 vehicles, and supercede all previous lifters used from 2005-2018. To say older models had no lifter issue is disingenuous.
@@UnionThugg I’ve personally not heard of this issue with the earlier pre-VVT cars, those cars seemed to be more prone to dropping valves. I’ll also admit I’m not as familiar with the 1st gen Chargers so I very well could be mistaken. My experience has been mostly with the 2011+ cars.
@@wjye yes, the older vehicles had issues as well. There was no single year that was "better" or "worse". The problem was the roller component of the lifter, not MDS, not lubrication.
@@UnionThugg I absolutely agree with that. I’ve seen some aftermarket lifters from Comp and Johnson that look like a huge improvement. Thoughts on those?
Would like to see a video on the v6 chargers civilian version.
Trickynicky B there’s a great channel here on RUclips called Marspeed and his whole channel is based on the V6 Civilian Charger. Check him out!
Charger is the best cop car not worst
I'm looking at a 2013 Charger Hemi detective unmarked car. It's got 74k on it, and it's really clean. I once owned a 2005 CVP71, it was a great car but it was pretty slow. I like cop cars because they come with HD upgrades,,
Look over the car well. Many people sell these cars and say they’re “Detective” or “Admin” cars when they’re really just ragged on patrol cars. It’s so bad that there’s more “Detective” cars being sold then actual patrol cars. Just check the car and be very mindful of that. I’ve got another video on this very topic that maybe of help to you. I also have a P 71, and while I absolutely love it there’s no doubt in stock form it is slow lol
@@wjye Awesome advice...Thanks
It's a bit late but can you do an interior on that?
I have a 2011 pursuit 5.7 with 113,000 on the clock but it’s suffering with misfire. Would this be anything to do with lifters or cam only no lights on the dash.
Ive been wanting to get one myself for 2 years now. Just got a decent factory job, if i get one I'm cosigning with my dad at a dealer so hopefully I'd be more likely to get approved. Quick question though, do all cruisers have the hookups to install a bumper guard? If I get one I'd like to do that just for the aesthetic of it, besides added protection. If so, where should I look in order to know if they had one.
Chwayde 22 If you purchase a push bar new it should come with all the applicable brackets you would need to mount it. There are many different sites that you can get them at I would hit up the Google for the best prices.
Chwayde 22 I just got one on my car a Westin and it mounts right to a steel bumber
Is there a way to tell if the lifters and cam are going out? What are signs of abuse on an engine and signs of really well taken care of
david G I think I might actually do a video on that topic. Other than service records you really can’t tell how an engine has been treated. It’s hard to see if it’s been well-kept abused. As for lifters going bad, typically bad lifters will start tapping and if the roller goes bad it can seize and it will take out a load in the camshaft which will cause a misfire which could set off the check engine light. If the engine runs smooth and quiet you should be fine. Just keep in mind that almost all Hemis do have some kind of ticking noises that they make so you should research what bad lifters sound like beforehand.
My husband bought a V6 2014 charger police pursuit a month ago. It had bad lifters when we brought it home. Lucky it was still covered under the powertrain warranty and got it fixed for free. We love cruising around in it. Have you had any issues with yours running rich?
I have not, This car has the Hemi in it and has not given me any issues. *knock on wood* lol
I’m shocked dodge honored your warranty given it was a police vehicle
How can I check and see if mine is still on the warranty
Why does the 5.7 Hemi wipe out lifters and cams ? Cop car engines are mechanically no different than civilian option. PCM only real difference. Same with P71s. Oil passage issue maybe ? Something restricting the flow and lubrication of them.
Katmandu2 You are correct. However it’s more of a problem with the police cars because the police cars spend a lot of time just sitting and idling. And I think the issue is just related to the lifters themselves. The needle bearings tend to come out and it causes the roller to drop and wipe out the cam. It could just be an issue of a bad batch of lifters or just cheap parts in general.
Nickle back does suck.
Bipolar 1 Thats subjective lol
Did the 2nd gen front ends get any better from the 1st gen (06-10) I've heard stories from other mechanics, can drivers and law enforcement that the 1st gen front ends wear out frequently
I did hear it more often on the 06-10 models then the 11-14. At almost 200k my front end did need a rebuild.
Do you change transmission fluid in the pursuit charger
I did yes. I installed a new transmission pan with a drain plug so I could regularly service it.
So with the difference in transmissions, (5 speed vs 8 speed??) is there a significant difference in “real world” miles per gallon?
Sorry for the late reply, I have noticed that the 8 speed autos do tend to get slightly better mileage then the 5 speeds, but not enough to make that big of a difference
What are some good messageboard forums for Chargers ?
Katmandu2 ChargerForumz and there’s a ton of great FB groups as well.
Telling me it's a Mercedes transmission does not reassure me haha
lol Yeah that's a good point. I'll still say it is a great transmission tho!
It's not a Mercedes transmission. It's adaptation of the ZF 5HP30.
Mercedes and several other makes also used a version of the ZF 5-spd.
@@UnionThugg yea like BMW’s
@@jbcarsvids4128 and Jaguar and Rolls ...
I have a 2011 pursuit charger, trans still 5 speed, yes I want 6 speed manual, it is in the future plan, but as of now no issues with the auto 5 speed, I drive hell outta this car , I cut it zero slack , an still running strong, at 198 thousand miles
These new dodges are Very Dope…most people who talk 💩 about them most likely are jealous because they can’t afford one…
I’m in ny to, where can I find something like that
Justin Lawton just keep an eye out on Craigslist and FB marketplace. I found this through there.
Thanks
I'll trade my 2008 crown vic for a police charger 5.7 probably a 2010 or 2016
I traded my Vic for my 14’ Charger and missed it dearly.
Hi yesterday I saw a a sport symbol on the dash and don’t know how to activate it or if the car even has it it’s a 2014 5.7 and I love your car the hood is aligned my hood fenders and number are all different and none of it fits right
Jakob Czarnecki if your car is a police model then it doesn’t have Sport mode. Almost sounds like your car might have had an accident or something
wjye it is a cop car and I was wondering if I got that obd 2 port tazer if it would give my car sport mode
@@jakobczarnecki5131 The Tazer will work on our cars, Although I'd do some research cause I think I read somewhere that because Pursuits have the column shifter the cluster gauge menu has the "P R N D" display, I read that the Tazer messed it up so it didn't appear anymore. I'm not sure if this is still the case though.
Jakob Czarnecki yes it will I have a tazer and a police charger
shakeANDbake3G does it mess up the P R N D like he said or is it fine and is it worth it
I have the 2014 also have you had the lifter issue
I have not had that issue. Knock on wood.
Why do the lifters and cams wear out on the 5.7 Hemi ? Has the issue been fixed yet ?
Katmandu2as I mentioned in another comment, I personally believe that it might have something to do with Cheap lifters and Parts being used. I believe the newer cars have remedy the issue with better lifters, I’ve not heard of the issue affecting the 2016 and newer models though.
@@wjye I have seen 2015+ Chargers with failed cams/lifters. The lifters I have seen that have failed are the NON AFM lifters. Not sure why though??? Roller end gets all sloppy causing noise.
@@mph5896 AFM lifters?
What type of brakes do you recommend for a 14 dodge charger RT?
Charger RT is gonna have different brakes then a Pursuit. I'm running Powerstop Police grade pads and standard rotors andI love the set-up. Recommend powerstop anyday.
Performance Friction are unbelievable. Will put you through the windshield! Lol !
@@wjye hey can you help me how to find a brake pads for my dodge police car I have had looking for those powerstop but I did not find the police brakes , i order some online but ot just doesn't fit they were smaller , i put the yeat model motor size and supposed it was to fit but it did not thanks
the champion the brakes are different depending on the year of the car. What year is it?
@@wjye my car its 2010 but I already find it the number of the brakes 1058 front and 1057 rear thanks for the reply hope you do an update of you car soon !
Do you recommend deleting the variable cylinder mode that comes stock on the Police Charger? That would help the cam and lifters to last (after you change them out), right?
Richard Berry At some point I’d like to delete MDS, I do think that may extend the life of the motor.
most people that have issues with them don't do the maintenance on time change oil every 3k people not 10k i have a 14 with a ton of miles no issues.
Any more updates
I'd be happy to make another video soon!
@@wjye I just got my own charger about 2 weeks ago
I love dodge charger even my father says that that car is worthless but I still beleive is the perfect sedan to drive
Everyone has an opinion on something. I still got my Charger and love it!
It doesn't bother me but people notice my car is very bouncy is it the shocks or something or just normal
Jakob Czarnecki My car has very stiff shocks and springs, the ride is quite hard on these cars. From what I hear that’s normal...a bouncy ride could mean bad shocks or springs.
@@wjye I have a question about struts, I have a 2010 police package and am planning to replaced but am.not sure what kind I need, I finded some online but on ( fit specifications ) says
W/o police package so I understand that mean those struts are only for regular dodge charger ?
the champion Id recommend rock auto for your struts. You could use regular struts but you’d need to replace all 4. Police shocks are much stiffer then the civilian shocks. If you mismatch parts handling maybe weird.
@@wjye thanks , I just check it out the rock auto but there are some that say w/o perfomance suspension, so what that mean ? The kyb brand looks very good so I can take that ones ?
the champion KYB is a good brand and as long as their the listed as fitting the police model they should work
The dodge car police is AWD ?
Some models are AWD and some are RWD. Both can be ordered
wjye which year u can recommend me for R/T ?
@@watchmanexpert I like the 2011 to 2014 models, but the 2016 and newer cars seem to be ironed out and more reliable. Personally go with as new as you can afford with these cars if you can.
wjye thanks !
The worst cop car to buy is the Dodge Intrepid. And the Ford Explorer/Taurus too. The reason why I don’t recommend buying the Explorers and Tauruses is because of the stupid timing chain driven water pump. The Intrepid was absolute garbage compared to the Chargers. Stick to Crown Victoria, Tahoe, V8 Caprice, 3.8 Impala (00-05), or Charger. I would never recommend any GM product with the 2.8, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, or 3.9 V6. The only GM V6 I would recommend is the 3.8 and the 4.3. Don’t buy the 2006-16 Impalas either. And stay away from Caprices with the 3.6 V6. The worst cop car from Ford was the Taurus and Explorer. For GM, it was the 06-16 Impala. For Chrysler it was the Intrepid. The best from Ford was the Crown Victoria. For GM it was the Caprice from 94-96 with the LT1. For Chrysler it was the Dodge Charger. The Crown Victoria is the number one choice for an ex cop car. The number one ex police SUV would be the Chevrolet Tahoe 2WD.
ATX-CVPI almost every agency where I live runs the new Explorer SUVs. I’m told by my friends in the field that they like them. That same friend currently has a Crown Vic as his issued patrol car and he hates it. He’s 6’4 and says he finds the Crown Vic to be very tight for him. He prefers the Explorers as him and his gear fit better and it’s easier to put any arrestees in the back vs the Crown Vic. As for motor issues, I’d say from experience with both the Charger and Explorers, they are almost on-par with each other. If a Charger eats a camshaft and requires repairs it’s still not an easy job. Both cars would require the engine to be removed or extensively torn apart to fix, and the repair costs are about the same for both cars. Honestly the Explorers aren’t bad in my opinion. I have owned and driven many Crown Vics and if I was in law enforcement I would prefer one if I could get it, but unfortunately it seems that the new explorers are going to be the cop cars of the future… At least where I live. I’ll be doing a video about the Crown Vic very soon.
I’ll also agree with you about GM, I have not had good luck with any GM product I’ve owned.
Its the only ex police car I can fit in.
fat fuck
