  • This is an update to my first video about the sleep act. Since the law has been in place now we have a better idea of what the lot actually does. Turns out a lot of what we were initially told about the sleep act was false information from earlier renditions of the law that never actually made it into the final bill. (Who would ever think the media would put out misleading or incorrect information?!?!) basically speaking, the sleep act just allows the state to find you up to $1000. If you get pulled over for loud exhaust you may still be issued just a warning or a small fine. But repeated offenses can allow them to charge you more. So the sleep act was substantially neutered from what we were initially told. And because the credible hulk always sites as sources, here’s the article from SEMA I referenced: www.semasan.com/legislative-a....

      Technically having mufflers is required for inspection. In the past I've known many places who never really looked, but I'm not sure if thats the case now.

    Hello there, I appreciate you making this video and shedding light on this issue. Do you happen to have any additional updates since this video was made?
    I just purchased a dump exit exhaust for my V8 Lexus SUV. It isn't one of those pop or crackle exhausts like some of these sports sedans have, but a deeper tone instead. The exhaust does remove the muffler but comes with a resonator instead, and I'll still keep my catalytic conveter.
    I don't intend on driving fast or making unnecessary noise, but do you think I'm safe? I'm in NYC, and supposedly, we have sound cameras in undisclosed locations.
    Thanks again!

      The sound cameras I heard never actually happened. As for catback systems, as long as your exhaust isn’t obnoxious loud I think you’ll be fine. I still here plenty of loud exhausts in my area and the cops don’t seem to hassle them. NYC could be different, but I’m not sure.

    I got pulled over by a cop and he gave me a loud exhaust summons. I since then swapped everything to stock. Will I get fined when I go to court?

    • @wjye
      @wjye  Год назад

      I’m not sure. If you’re in NYC things are different there then the rest of the state. For the most part if you reverted to stock you should be fine

    What if I have an exhaust system from the dealership itself? I have an Infiniti Q50 and the dealership sells sport exhaust systems that sound pretty low, so I’m curious if this will be a problem here in NYC?

      @wjye  Год назад +2

      I couldn't tell you for sure. if its not loud and doesnt attract too much attention, you might be okay. I still hear plenty of loud cars here in rural NY and they don't get much attention. City might be different.

      @@wjye Thank you for the reply man!. Yes that’s what I figured because mines came on my brand new vehicle back in 2018 and it never was never an issue so I would hate to get a stupid ticket over a stock exhaust sold to me by the dealership. I wish they specified what was legal but of course this is just a money grab for NY. I could understand the loud pops and annoying exhaust sound that most driver are annoying us with but these standard exhaust that make a little noise should be allowed still.

    I am still absolutely not a fan of this legislation. But I am just slightly happier that it is not as bad as it was initially reported. I do believe that the motorcycle guys are still getting it hard, but for the car guys it’s not nearly as awful from what I’m reading as was reported. This legislation still sucks.

    What about if you are visiting from another state?

    • @wjye

      If your exhaust is crazy loud yes they could ticket you, but any cop anywhere can do that. but if your passing thru there’s not much else they can do.

    I got a ticket for having an aftermarket exhaust my exhaust is not that loud the cop said its illegal to have aftermarket exhaust

    • @wjye
      @wjye  Год назад

      Where did you get the ticket? Technically the old law still stands that says “Any modification to the exhaust system in order to amplify the noise is illegal.” That law has been on the books for decades. If all aftermarket exhaust is illegal that means half the cars in NY are illegal because so many people hafta to fix rotted exhaust with aftermarket stuff. I’d try to fight it. Still lots of loud cars in my area and cops don’t look twice unless it’s obnoxiously loud or they’re trying to get you for something else. I’d try to fight your ticket if possible. Good luck

      What's not that loud? Glad you got the ticket. I hate hearing modified exhausts. Why should someone be allowed to infringe on my peace and quiet to satisfy their own selfish desires?

    This will go down in flames, just like when they tried to use EZ-PASS to mail out speeding tickets & that lasted how long? This new noise policy is even more of a joke than that was. ANYONE who pays this fine is a complete sucker. They need to prove it was you etc... there are so many variables it silly. LOL

    Muffler delete's still good or what

    • @wjye
      @wjye  Год назад

      Replacing the muffler with pipe is not legal. But you could gut a muffler and hollow it out and it might be legal if it’s not too loud.

    I live in upstate NY, and i called a dealership asking if id pass inspection if i put an exhaust on my car and they said its possible that it wont pass inspection. So idk what i should...risk it or dont risk..i just want my subie to rumble 😃

      My car has aftermarket exhaust and it passed inspection even after this stupid law. I see loud trucks ripping down the street all the time without any issues. I think for the most part as long as the car isn’t obnoxiously loud it should pass. Take it to a small shop not a dealer
