Had this aura only once... utterly terrifying. I think it was because I broke my schedule to get to work super early for a meeting. Had both the missing vision, paralyzed face and marching spasms down the arm and leg. Thankfully nothing worse than a headache after. Great video

Dr. Blackwell, thank you SO MUCH for this video. I have never been able to explain to people exactly what the visual fog of migraine is like, and this is such a good representation. I kept telling people, "I see paisley patterns in front of everything, sometimes it is one big paisley."

    I have aspergers and synesthesia.
I have been worried all day, because the visual difference i usually have due to the synesthesia, was completely different.
I had like you discribe, a starshaped kaleidoscope, made out of rainbow water. And suddently i felt like i was hit in the head with a hammer. Wich caused my synesthesia to make a bright light, like a lightning. And I have been laying in my bed since, in complete dark.
Im really grateful that i know what it was now, cause im usually not in great touch with my body.
    Thank you! :)

    • @lazybelphegore6748

I also have synesthesia! I can see music; all the numbers and letters have associated colors. That was all; but after I had a severe case of covid, now I can see smells too.
I am in a few synesthesia groups online; and it seems like there are alot of people on the spectrum that also have synesthesia. Which makes sense, because it is a sensory condition; it seems we process senses differently than most people.
Sorry to hear about your migraine; I hope you feel better soon.

Prevention by avoiding the triggers. Soy, cigarette smoke, perfume, Febreeze. Industrial seed oils and a high carb diet increased my inflammation. Stopping all these things and taking a daily magnesium supplement has cut my migraine frequency by 95%. All without medication. I used to have 3-5 migraines a week, some lasting 3 days. I was a walking migraine. I feel much better.

I get this on average once a month. It happens only in my right eye. When it first happens, I get a weird feeling that I cant explain, and then my vision slowly develops grey spots and strange patterns within the span of a minute. Then, a minute or two later, it fades away, and I'm back to normal. I've been get this for about seven years now, since the age of 24. When it first happened, I was working very hard at work, and the loss of vision freaked me out. Usually it happens if I'm stressed, or I'm doing something physically exhausting. Ever since then, I find that relaxing my mind and laying down helps the symptoms diminish faster. Honestly, im scared and don't know if this is a sign of something more sinister. I had two small episodes today.

I'm aware a healthy lifestyle may have a positive effect, but how "healthy lifestyle" is defined varies, and to what extent is the influence? Precise data would be very appreciated.

I sometimes experience the aura all by itself, accompanied by nothing else unusual. I do not get headaches or anything else described that others have while seeing aura.
First time was way back in 1979 when I was in my college dorm room studying. Thought I had accidentally looked at a desklamp, or something bright, that makes a fuzzy glowing spot in your visual field. That goes away in a matter of seconds, maybe a minute. But this time, no, it expanded in a crescent and lasted for several minutes. Ever since, maybe once or twice a year, or five, I don't count. It never interferes except briefly with activities such as driving, walking, conversations. It makes reading impossible for about half a minute. Not a real problem. There is advice about drinking enough water, get enough sleep, avoid too much sugar or caffeine. I haven't noticed, in my amateur zero control group, no record keeping way, any such correlation. For us aura-only types, just enjoy the light show.
A glimpse into the workings of the brain. Anyone working in artificial intelligence, with CNNs for computer vision, might recognize edge detectors and motion detectors. Color is entangled with edges and motions. I don't know if anyone is doing serious research into the details of how aura looks.
Always assumed it was some uncommon but not rare phenomenon involving a temporary imbalance of neurotransmitters or ions in my visual cortex. More and more people are describing this and commenting on these videos. In fact, I made my own very short video depicting aura: v=l_IIt9hJmn4
I hope neuroscientists can find out more, and find effective treatments for those having the entire migraine experience.

Migraine Aura "lasts 5 to 60 min" is wrong, when I was younger I could have the visual aura problem for 2-3 hours.
In my youth I also had problem with speech during my heaviest attacks. I could not form words or sentences in the sense I couldn't find words and/or I forgot how to pronounce them mechanically and the words came out of in the wrong order. And my hearing couldn't detect if the words sounded correct or not, while I still understood others perfectly. During some attacks I also got the sense of being "outside" the body, sort of like dreaming, and when I heard my own voice it was like listening to someone else speaking, so I sometimes interrupted myself because I wasn't sure if it was my voice I heard or someone else speaking to me.
Once when I was about 15 the police arrested me because they thought I was high as I was actually trying to get help from them to get home since my aura was 100% all over my vision. They threw me in a cell, without access to medication, with full lights on and a metal bed with no pillow to sleep on. And I couldn't communicate properly, because of the migraine. They just laughed at me when I showed a card that informed abut my migraine. It wasn't until 2 hours later when my mother arrived with a doctor they would let me go. I didn't even get an apology... I reported them, but nothing happened of course.
As an adult the attacks are much weaker, and I just get the aura for about 30-60 minutes with a following heavy headache.

I've had these since childhood. They became fewer and farther apart as I got older, but It's completely disabling when one occurs. I go blind in one eye only, can't think of words to say and 1 or both arms briefly go numb. I can only lay in a dark quiet room! I take supplements & try to eat right/exercise, but have spinal stenosis & DDD and was told muscle spasms trigger them. I don't feel right for a good week or two after having one, and I read where these can damage the brain over time. :(

It's not necessarily about the aura. There are four phases: Prodrome, aura, headache, postdrome, putting migraine squarely on the seizure-spectrum. It's not always about drugs either. I found that if I started tapping (EFT) at the onset of the aura I could avert the headache but not the postdrome. Learn EFT. It worked for me.

And what about after the migraine. My brain feels bruised, when I bend over or sneeze ect. Right behind my eyes. Both sides. My headaches are bad, vomiting/ usually last only 2hrs after that. Awesome awesome presentation. Thank you so much for sharing this!! I had an aura without any headache last night and wanted to learn about this.
Craig can I ask you a question? My mom hit her head on a shelf about 5-6 years ago and immediately started to get floaters. The same day she saw light flashes and headed to the ER. They checked her out, said she was fine and to follow up with an ophthalmologist. She did and the Doctor told her that at her age (57) it was not uncommon and she didn't have detachment. 5-6 years later, last week, she had some light flashes (as well as her constant floaters she's had ever since bumping her head). I'm trying to convince her to get checked out, but does it sound like there is a possibility of retinal detachment?
She just told me she went to an optometrist for glasses last week, but can an optometrist detect a retinal detachment? Still talking to her about seeing an ophthalmologist.

    • @cbeyedr
      @cbeyedr  10 лет назад

Anneal, you are exactly right. Light flashes means the vitreous is pulling on the Retina, which is the most common cause of a retinal tear (may be associated with new floaters), which leads to detachment. I would bet the ophthalmologist told your mother to be on the lookout for those exact symptoms and to call promptly if they occurred.

This happened to me about two years ago as well same symptoms starting with dead numb last two fingers on left hand- I got an MRI it showed a small arachnoid cyst in my brain , I'm just not sure if thats why it happened . Do you think there could be a connection between these symptoms and the cyst?

I have experienced the "aura-only" about four times. The hand drawn images are not accurate. You show a portrait with black, white, flesh-color, and gray. My auras only contain the colors of the original image. My last experience was while reading black and white on a computer monitor; my aura was in black and white ONLY. The original image is somehow scrambled but the original colors are transformed.

I had it first time 2 days ago and I’m 45. I’m not on a pill and never had any contraception in my life. What may cause it? How to prevent this happening ever ever EVER again! I’m going to the doctors to find out if that was a hormonal cause of migraine with aura. I had migraine with no aura before I think (just general headaches) but aura happened suddenly 2 days ago. My mother had a stroke in her head at 40 years old. But cannot remember any migraine with aura. I was pretty scared, I thought I was having my retina detached. But it was exactly as it was described in this video followed by mild headache localised in my temple and right eye.

    • @Rita50
      @Rita50 2 года назад

@@malpaslandscapes8444 No, I never had a repeat of that. My mother said it’s all because of blood pressure. Also I noticed I was sitting in the bed a lot with my head tilting forward, so I started doing massage on my neck to improve oxygen supply for my brain. That lowered my blood pressure. Also I excluded a M&S chocolate which actually caused me vertigo. And I started taking Magnesium: Neuro Mag and other vitamins. And started lowering cholesterol which was high.
When I have a high blood pressure (when I have flashes, red cheeks, shivering and have cold hands etc) I drink rose hip tea, valeriana, give a warm bath to my feet and go to bed. Doctors didn’t prescribe me lowering blood pressure drugs because when I visit them my blood pressure is always fine. But I measure it at home.

There is a lot in your question. A light flash is not an uncommon migraine trigger. "Entoptic" phenomena is a name given to several visual experiences, including small squiggly fast-moving lines seen against a bright background like the sky, which are white cells highlighted in retinal vessels. In general you see less well at night because you are using rods, rather than cones. You might want to check in with an ophthalmologist if your vision seems to be decreasing or you have more questions.

At full development, mine seems to cover the entire area of vision in one eye. I need to close that eye and use the other, while still seeing the scintillation in the closed eye on a lesser scale. It seems that these scintillations are brought about by exposure to bright lights. Similar to what happens to most people when exposed to a camera flash. However, the light does not need to be that bright for mine to occur. And they last anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes (maybe a bit longer on some occasions). In addition, I'm sure that I am also suffer from what I just learned is called "Visual Snow". Where I have permanent squiggly germ like lines (floaters) and continuous flashes of light (stars). Usually, the only time these affect my field of vision, except when I look to the sky, and I see all the flashings of light, and see the floaters more clearly. My night vision seems to be getting worse because of this vision. My night vision is the same as the static that one would see on a television, referred to normally as snow. Is there any way that I can get relief from either of these symptoms? My optometrist seems to pooh pooh my conditions, saying that everyone gets those from time to time. I'm not sure I am getting my points across to him. Would it be better to discuss this with my primary physician?

Wow thanks I thought I had a detachement seeing as a doc said sometimes the gel or something detaches from the back of the eye, I didnt have any black or dark area and this has been a few years, I did start having difficulty reading books, far sightedness a year after.
I first had this few years back and don't have headaches I have it on the corner of the right side of my field of vision at the top, fist time I had this I was scared and had it in China when I was very stressed, but just now I am calm and so not sure why these happen, I can't see a pattern, I am coming off paxil and so this may be the reason, i.e. stress, cause I know what this is I just relaxed and watching the video helped me relax, the 'well at least Im not alone' feeling and now its gone, lasted about 5 mins but the first ones were I was scared, I panicked and lasted longer seems like 30mins or more in china, I did have what I thought at first was a mystical experience whilst meditating in the mountains of wudang in china, it was the first day of a short course and that first day meditated 4 and a half hrs, that night in the blackness of sleep I was awoken by a white light so white that it is indescribable, I woke up and sat up sweating and waiting to see if I just had a hemorrhage in the brain after a while fell back to sleep, I told a fellow student and he joked maybe its a tumor and I had that thought in the back of my mind for months, what an idiot that guy was. That was 2004, since then had three of these scintillating scotoma experiences, it could be wear and tear and in my case taking paxil (seroxat) since 1996 hasn't helped (possibly). I did go to a hospital
when one of these things happened and was told that the gel or something at the back of the eye disconnects and causes this, then I searched online and saw that this happens to guys over 85!! I thought no, I want to arrest age not accelerate it!!

I described the most common symptoms, but there is quite a variation, and your experience is not uncommon. Some people also have changes in sensation or speech depending on what part of the brain is affected. All can be scary the first time. Significant change in pattern is a reason for a conversation with your doctor to be sure it isn't one of those other things.

  • @cbeyedr

Multiple aura symptoms maybe not typical, but not rare either. Vision loss should be on the same side of vision from both eyes. Tingling of fingers, lips and tongue not uncommon. The pain with bending and sneezing were attributed to the now discredited vascular theory, but they are still a puzzle. Your Headache description is unfortunately common, but pain on both sides is not typical and is a reason to talk to your doctor. Also there are a number of meds that abort or help 80% of headaches.

Eliminate all dairy products from your diet and increase your daily magnesium intake (twice a day, 400mg AM and 400mg PM), and say bye bye to migraines. And I suggest "Paleo" diet or "Vegetarian Paleo", for the ones who don't eat meats. It's as simple as that.

You would be experiencing one way migraines can evolve over time. Change in symptom pattern is something your doctor would monitor. "Worst headache ever," particularly of sudden onset, is a red flag to your doctor to worry about ruptured aneurysm, and a short list of worrisome things; thus the CT Scan. Interestingly, pain usually decreases with time for reasons not yet known. Hope yours stay quiet.
