Super reaction to just a handful of there songs this band is something special many many more all as good as the next and all the cover songs you wont be disappointed.
The short story regarding the Life video; this was the drummer's, Murata Tamu, return to the band after a maternity leave. This was during a streaming live concert. They faced her for the performance and she wasn't expecting that. And Adabana is still my favorite from them. Still listen to it on repeat to this day...
Mayu (lead singer) wrote the song after a failed audition. It was Hazuki's (the green guitar players) birthday (cake etc) as well and they did a tribute to the drummer (Tamu Morata) by all facing her and singing to her after she returned early from maternity leave to start a tour. Goddam I luv these girls!!!
Ah, and, yes, the impact of Life, even if you don't know the story. Tough not to tear up on that one. So, the band put the song together for Tamu, the drummer, while she was on leave for the birth of her first child. They sent her the track and asked her to learn the drum part, and then when she rejoined the band for the first practice, they all read statements to her about how happy they were that she was back, and then they all faced her while they played it. Thus the tears from all 5 of them. It's "Life", a celebration of her son and her family, but also of the life they have as a fairly new band, and the first time she had an actual run through with her bandmates was minutes after she learned they had written it for her. Pure. F'ing. Gold.
Hey Ross so glad you decided to do all 4 at once, its fun to see your reaction back to back. I think you had the same reaction to Life like most of us who saw/heard it for the first time. As you can see Nemophila can and does do everything (even K pop covers!) and I hope you are down for more because I will certainly be requesting more via Patreon!
Saki (the guitarist screen right) is a super well known lead, often ranked in the top 5 female guitarists in Japan, also a lead in the band Mary's Blood. But the brilliance is having her paired with Hazuki where they can literally just hand off to each other on the fly, either dueling or duetting. Reminds me of the ease with which Midori and Miyako trade back and forth in Lovebites. Then Tamu's drums (also a well known drummer) and Haraguchi-san's bass playing and songwriting, all just tying in with Mayu's fantastic vocals and, yes, her pure front-woman energy. This group is considered an all star collection of talent for damn good reason.
Excellent Reaction, and thank you for a "four in one". We really appreciate the effort you put in to these. I hope you're enjoying the journey. Dragonphly: excellent choice to show Ross the range of this band! I'm sure you've read the history of the band. Mayu (singer) needed studio musicians for a project she was working on after her band "Lipstick" had broken up. Under the circumstances, the musicians came together by chance. The chemistry between them was so good, they all left their former bands to form "Nemophila". Concerning the emotion: Tamu (drummer) had taken some time off for maternity leave. This was the first song on her return, so the other members decided to dedicate it to her (hence them all facing her). As I mentioned, I believe "Life" is the fan favorite "power ballad" of theirs....and you can see why. As a guitarist, I prefer "Now I Here" simply because of the brilliant counter melodies between guitarists, Hazuki and Saki. And Hey, if you want to hear Mayu rap, try "Style". To sum up, Band Maid gives you great Hard Rock. Lovebites gives you great classic metal. But you never know what you're going to get from Nemophila! Oh, and the guitar parts you were referring to, they're using the back "neck position" pickups to get a warmer, less edgy tone.
Thank goodness they came together for Mayu Session, but it wasn't by chance (in the sense that it was purely accidental), and they didn't all leave their bands to join Nemophila's precursor Mayu Session when it was formed. Haraguchi-san, Tamu, and Hazuki had already left their bands-Holderlins, Soramimi, Disqualia (though they might have had other projects going on). Btw, Sindy/Mayu did leave Lipstick but that band didn't break up. Saki didn't leave Mary's Blood to join Mayu Session/Nemophila-I saw her playing club gigs with both MS/Nemo and MB in the fall of 2019, and MB didn't cease activity until last year.
This is an awesome sample of NEMOPHILA's arsenal, and there are even more sides to this incredible band that you have yet to cover. Will say of all the sides of NEMOPHILA, I love their heaviest stuff the most. That said, LIFE just hits on another level...untouchable #1 NEMOPHILA track for me. Betting DragonFhlyy had this order on purpose. NEMOPHILA performs LIFE as their Encore during their live concerts and it has become known as their Anthem to many of us. Knowing the back story on this one shows just how close this band really is to each other. This was TAMUs first time back with the band after she rested from pregnancy/childbirth of her first daughter...she is a mother of two daughters now. They didn't tell her that they would be performing this to her as a gift until just a few minutes before this performance. Right before this song, SAKI gave a welcome back speech to TAMU and she broke down crying. The whole band got very emotional (cut scenes during the vid). The band all turned and faced TAMU during this performance and she was crying the entire time...didn't miss a beat. SAKI and HAZUKI making their guitars cry as hard as TAMU is. It was also guitarist HAZUKI's birthday, hence the backstage footage. This band is something very special. 🌸✨🌠
Great reaction. I did know they have a concert in a town I didn't planned to go to during my stay in Japan, but this reaction made me decide to do a detour for that one. Adabana and life are my favorites by them.
You'll notice they're all facing drummerTamu during "Life" ...This is her return from hiatus, after becoming a mum. Warch it with English subs and you'll cry too ( I did). Talent and a genuine bond... These ladies are exceptional
Raitei= Thunder..Nemophila brings the Thunder..Mayu brings the Lightning..They're a very diverse band that can excel in any genre.. amazing musicians/artists..and Mayu is a one in a trillion vocalist.. Life is a very special song for this band..wish you would've turned on the lyrics for this one
One of my favorite things about this band is that they have two super guitarists with two different styles -- Hazuki, on the left, shreds in super-contemporary style while Saki, on the right, kills it in more authentic, very metal style.
"I may cry". Dude, I do, frequently. What else can you do when faced with overwhelming perfection? The music and the people are too beautiful for words. BTW, ALL of their songs are the best so far.
Yeah they're bawling their eyes out in Life. Song is about the drummer giving birth and a highly emotional song since she'd been on maternity leave and they surprised her with the song written specially for her.
There's a lot of misconceptions about "Life". In an interview with Mayu and Keiko Terada to promote a Show-Ya/Nemophila tour, Mayu brought up the 1st time she met Keiko and how that experience led to Mayu writing the "Life" lyrics. Mayu had auditioned with her old band Lipstick for the 'Cute Girl' opener act in Show-Ya's Naon no Yaon festival (briefly; Keiko is leader singer of Japanese all-female band Show-Ya that's been around since the '80s. For 30+ years, on and off, Show-Ya has produced a festival called Naon no Yaon to promote and show case female talent. The festival has established all-female bands/singers and also holds a 'Cute Girl' contest to showcase an unknown acts). It was always Mayu's dream to play on the famous Tokyo Hibiya Park stage where Naon no Yaon is held, and when Lipstick lost the audition Mayu watched the show and wrote the lyrics to "Life" vowing one day to come back and sing it on her dream stage, which she is when Nemophila played Naon years later as an established act. The lyrics to "Life" are basically about not giving up on your dreams, overcoming obstacles, hardships and set backs in your way. The reason everyone was emotional on the video is because it was the 1st live session together since drummer Tamu had been back from maternity leave and the band formed a circle and played "Life" facing Tamu to show her how much she was missed.
As I mentioned on Dissension, Life is my favorite as well. It's nearly as moving as their cover of the banana song. Do seek them out if they ever get close enough for you to see them live.
Whoa! Careful there, you almost overdosed on Nemophila, and there is no antidote! They are so good. And Dragonphlyy should be the sixth member of Nemo.😀 Good work all 'round.
The emotional thing was because the drummer, Tamu, had just returned from her maternity leave. They performed the song to her, which is why they are facing her. Although this was an extant song, and not written for the event, the lyrics allude to the potential of young children and are generally pretty overwhelming. Mayu has been overcome with emotion a few times in live shows when she's sung this - sometimes to the point of finding it hard to get through the song. It's well worth watching again with the (approximate) translation of the lyrics in subtitles. The backstage thing was Hazuki's birthday (guitarist on our left, stage right), hence the cake. The band's early period (they started 2019) was very challenging due to Covid and they have worked so hard. Their journey has been an emotional one and that frequently shows during performances and interviews. Tears are not unusual in Nemophila's world. Just one more reason to love them and why we all feel protective of them. (Not that they need our protection - they could probably kick all our arses simultaneously.)
Great reaction dude. You now need to do a 4 song reaction to their covers.. Detroit rock city and Aces high, I'm sure you will know, 10 Feet and Cursed Sha-na-na-na, you may not? Both famous Japanese bands, well worth the look.. That would be bloody awesome.. Best wishes from France
Cool idea to do a marathon! You started with perhaps my two favorites by them, though I have to say, my favorite is usually whichever song is playing. Just a reminder on the names: ex-Mary's Blood guitarist Saki ex-Lipstick vocalist Mayu ex-Disqualia guitarist Hazuki (also plays with Lisa-X) ex-Hölderlins bassist Haraguchi-san, and ex-Soramimi drummer Murata Tamu
the last song life from what i heard is written for the drummer because she just gave birth to her 2nd child and saki the black haired guitarist was giving a speech to Tamu the drummer and she didnt realize that everything turned their mic stands and faced her so they can sing to her that is why they were crying in the middle
Great reaction and great choice from Dragon Phly. Nemophila is for Life. Thats a certainty. Check out the life video again with subtitles on. The lyrics to this also are amazing. If you want to do a set again try Fighter, OIRAN (latest live video version 2023), Monsters and Soraii to finish off their early classic songs.
Is anyone else distracted by Saki when watching Raitei? To me Hazuki seems to be a very underappreciated guitarist. In Rise Hazuki to me looks absolutely gorgeous. Pause at 14:27 to see a stunning still Of Haraguchi-San / Hara-Chan.
An absolutely brilliant selection to get a taste of this excellent band. Raitei (RYE-TIE) = thunder, specifically violent thunder. The lead singer, Mayu, was quite pregnant when they filmed this - supermum! Always on my playlists! RISE is a great example of Mayu switching from vocal fry to sweet melodies in a heartbeat - and what an incredible bridge this has too, with that soft, two line, vocals. Awesome riffs too! And all in English too. LIFE - ah, a very special song that, once I understood the concept behind their behaviour during the MV, moved me to tears (explanations below I see so I won't go into it again. Loving your reactions!
Awesome reaction-as always. Nemophila are great live- i see another recommendation for Now I here...another great 80's style ballad like Life. May i suggest Brightness from Saki...she is the guitarist on the right side of the screen...it is a instrumental....Saki just shreds..and if you watch...first you will thank me later...secondly...you will see the ode to Babymetal. its nuts,u react to all my fav groups....Twice, Band Maid, Babymetal, Dreamcatcher and Nemophila...u the man...keep up the great reactions.
