Yeah it's crazy how Goldberg as WCW champion was secondary compared to whatever the nWo factions were doing. I think he missed another PPV around this time (World War 3?).
This was the problem with the nwo.... it left everyone uninterested in everything else. Only Goldberg and DDP mattered for for the WCW heavyweights. The cruiserweight division was the only other thing.... everything else was of no interest because of how they built the nwo to crush everything.
@nicklazzaro5055 Which is why WCW nosedived in 1999 once the nWo had run its course because Bischoff didn't know what to do. Nobody was over apart from the same 10 guys he'd been pushing for 3 years now and they had stopped drawing.
What I didn't like about Bret's WCW run is Eric Bishoff made Bret flip flop. Here's a guy who got screwed over in WWF. Instead of turning him into the ultimate babyface, you have him start screwing ppl over, at starrcade '97. Then you go one step further, and have Bret working with a guy who's the king of politicking Hulk Hogan. Who by the way screwed Bret after Wrestlemania 9. I know Bret is a professional, so he did what he was told. Knowing all this even back then, was tough to wrap my head around. I kept asking, why would Bret work on the same side as Hulk Hogan? Even if Hogan never screwed Bret, Bret wouldn't want to work with someone who's part of the backstage politics. Seeing what happened to Bret at WWF's Survivor series.
Bret wrote in his book he stopped caring because he knew he made a huge mistake jumping ship. They wanted to switch him heel & face so often he just went with it
Raw just started getting good and taking back the lead in the monday night wars right around this time.... WCW was clubbing them for like 2 years before the nwo went every which way and everyone was in some form of the nwo.

"Refusing to wrestle" gimmicks make as much sense as "losing streak" and "I really want to be the guest referee in the championship match instead of wrestling for the title" gimmicks.
No Mercy was the height of those games. I remember evertime me and my boys would smoke we would want to play it immediately 😂 Of course the original game we first did though was WCW VS NWO
What I don't get is if one ring had a trap door which potentially could have been dangerous why didn't they just use the other ring without the trap door for other matches. Does that just not make sense
My only guess is they wanted the ring with the trap door in front of the hard cam so they could get the shot of it filling with smoke. And since that's where the camera was they also used it for the normal matches.
It makes a lot of sense, but this is WCW we're talking about, of course. 😄 From what I heard, no one in the opening match was told that a trap door was in the first ring, which led to Bulldog messing up his back as a result. Thankfully, they moved every singles match to the second ring after this, except Smiley vs. Miller, but even those two looked like they were taking odd bumps to avoid landing on the door.

They didn’t have nothing for Goldberg because they didn’t build him up properly. He didn’t have a promo game, couldn’t work long matches and squash matches vs main event guys isn’t sustainable. Their only focus was the streak and ironically enough it was also what kept him boxed in
Even without Ultimate Warrior's appearance in WCW, this pay-per-view and Halloween Havoc 1998 were two of the most disappointing shows of the year. I feel that the shows in 98 and the end of Goldberg's undefeated streak were first of several nails in the coffin for WCW. 😢

I don't know, if everyone calls you "underrated" then are you really underrated? Pretty obvious people know how good he was, so I wouldn't say he's underrated.
In glad you altered the video where you're showing the match. The "tv" you're looking at isn't as angled as badly as your previous version. Unfortunately your picture is cutting off the bottom left, but better than it was.
It's also worth noting that, after only two matches (the opening tag match & Smiley vs. Miller), the left ring was never used again until War Games... and even during that match everyone tried their hardest to avoid actually working in that ring, only doing the softest bumps possible if they had to be in it. One can only imagine that Bulldog complained about the trap door after the tag match, & Bishoff likely didn't take much thought into it, but then Smiley & Miller likely also complained after their match & Bischoff decided "OK, no more using that ring until the main event"... and even then I bet he only made that decision once guys like Nash, Hogan, & Hart started speaking up about it. Apparently no one in those first two matches were told about the trap door, too, which is just ridiculous to expect people to work matches without knowing about the added danger.
It's not funny, HHH and cie were simply smart enough to not make the same mistakes WCW did in 98, I mean they had 20 years to prepare themselves for it. 😂
That's seems so long ago. It's like I forgot everything that happened in WWE during the 2010's-2020's. It just isn't the same anymore. WCW War Games was fun. Now it's too serious and not memorable, besides one key spot.
Great review I think a top 8 about WCW's dumbest storylines would be cool or a video about The Bulldogs last run in WWF like The Road Warriors video, I'd watch those
The Saturn/Raven feud was by far my favorite thing going on around this time. WCW totally dropped the ball with Saturn, he was getting huge babyface heat and should've been at least in the US title picture.
According to Raven & Scott Hall, the four biggest druggies at the time were Raven, Saturn, Hall & Mongo McMichael. Saturn was a great talent but demons got the best of him
I used to watch Last Call With Scott Hall on RUclips with my older brother; much appreciated for the reference. Always hilarious seeing Hogan running away from people (mostly Piper, Savage and Warrior).
I was there. I was there twenty years ago on Brian Zane's first day of wrestling school. Watching PNW HOFers Jeremy Blanchard and G-Shock training him. Sooo proud of the work that all three have done for the wrestling community. 🎉🎉🎉
Isn’t it a weird case of what if’s with the hart family? What if Bulldog didn’t leave the WWF in correlation with the Montreal ScrewJob , and what if Owen Hart did . Would they both have longer careers and lives had they of switched places? Just a thought i had during the hart foundation match .
Problem is Bulldog without the Harts was totally useless in WWF hence why he was hanging around the Mean Street Posse in 1999 & 2000. Point being, he wouldn't have lasted long on his own. Owen's life would have been saved for sure but Davey was fooked no matter what
@@ReflectionOfPerfectionYou have a point there as far as Bulldogs usefulness, but i was thinking as far as the injury to bulldogs back that got him hooked on pills and such i’m assuming, had to of had something to do with the shortening of his life and career . Granted yes his accident at this pay per view , could of also happened elsewhere or there could of been another injury that led him down that road , but as far as the particular circumstances behind his injury that could of been avoided had he stayed in the wwf . Then again didn’t he also have a fondness for cocaine as well ?
I saw the subject matter for this video and said "If he doesn't acknowledge that Saturn vs. Raven is the match of the night I will riot." The thing that the clips don't adequately show you here is that the crowd was SO into that match. In glad you altered the video where you're showing the match. The "tv" you're looking at isn't as angled as badly as your previous version. Unfortunately your picture is cutting off the bottom left, but better than it was.
Cool review as always Brian 💯
That controller and rumble pack is giving me insane nostalgia right now. WCW vs. NWO Revenge is still one of my favourite wrestling games. 😂
Watching this on my cellular telephone
It’s funny how this WarGames match with 3 teams of 3 didn’t work but when WarGames was brought to NXT in 2017 it did work and it was amazing.
It's not funny, HHH and cie were simply smart enough to not make the same mistakes WCW did in 98, I mean they had 20 years to prepare themselves for it. 😂
Because then we had *’WRESTLING’* And this was hardly entertainment.
That's seems so long ago. It's like I forgot everything that happened in WWE during the 2010's-2020's. It just isn't the same anymore. WCW War Games was fun. Now it's too serious and not memorable, besides one key spot.
Losing myself at the Goofy scream 😂
lol yeah. Worst ppv of that year. Saturn and Raven, only good match.
Just weeks before this, WWF had Stone Cold vs Undertaker main eventing Madison Square Garden at Summerslam.
Would WCW have benefited from having the Expansion Pack installed?
I was lurking
Great review I think a top 8 about WCW's dumbest storylines would be cool or a video about The Bulldogs last run in WWF like The Road Warriors video, I'd watch those
Love the N64 Controller Holding Zane part 😂… can’t wait to hear your review of the Netflix Mr McMahon docu series
And also, wcw management didnt informed wrestlers about trap door. They could have a match on other ring considering they set up 2 rings for wargames…
Oh a lot were informed. Bulldog unfortunately was not one of those people
@@jayharv285 i know alex wright wasnt informed at all.
Disco has said that they were very clear about the trap door, but bulldog was out of it
"Copperberg" BRIAN PLS LMAO 😂
The Ultimate Warrior wants COKE COKGAN!
HO KOGAN!
Ernest Miller and Norman Smiley remain one of my favorite aspects of 1990s WCW. Love those guys!
I didn't get Norman Smiley until I was older and WCW was long gone. I badly unestimated his charisma
BEEN waiting for this 1 for ages. it'd here, IT'S FINALLY HERE!, it was when Alex back dropped Bulldog, that's the bump where he hit the trap door
Brian I think you should do a video/videos on ranking of each championship belt designs up to modern day in WWE
I approve this message.
Love to see you review WarGames 2000, aka Russo's Revenge from WCW Nitro.
What was with Rude's hair (or lack of it) here?
Omg the Goofy yell had me in tears. That was great
Haunting fact: Juventud was Silver King’s opponent when he died in 2019.
I saw the subject matter for this video and said "If he doesn't acknowledge that Saturn vs. Raven is the match of the night I will riot."
The thing that the clips don't adequately show you here is that the crowd was SO into that match. The guys did an excellent job of making people *want* Saturn to underdog his way to a win, and he *did* it. Couple swerves thrown in here and there to keep it interesting, top tier quality wrestling from Saturn and Raven. All around good stuff.
Classic WCW: Come for the undercard, leave before the Egos fuck up another main event.
The even dumber thing about the trapdoor. He could've just rolled up in the spot between the rings (same way Scott Hall crawled out earlier)
ultimate warrior in WCW was a huge swing and a miss so to speak great PPV review brian can't believe this happened 26-years ago lol time flies.
Not Related To WCW Or Anything But I Rewatched The Mask The Animated Series and It was so F**king entertaining better than Son Of The Mask anyways WCW the Wrestling Promotion with a massive Influence on everything In Life I know
Raven vs Saturn seemed like the main event storyline. The match was a classic with great storytelling. You had this back story and character development. It goes to show how brilliant of mind, Raven has.
One of my core memories, my forst WCW 12 years old. I very clearly remember a lot of jeers and disappointment to both the Stieners natch and the War Games match. When Warrior was kicking the cage wall down, every adult near me was getting up to leave.
Brian, those N64 graphics were a lot better looking than I remembered 😂
good review
I was there for that famous warrior WCW Debut! My 1st and only time
At WCW on Connecticut! And love it to this day! You can see my folks on camera a lot lol
Wait. Al Green had a match with Goldberg? Did he sing "Lets Stay Together" on his way to the ring?
Probably "Don't Hurt Me No More".
@@BiggieTrismegistus 😂😂
Makes sense if it was against Goldberg.
First thing I thought of when I woke up today was WWR Classic PPV day!
Hey YO ….love me some some Last Call Scott Hall tappin out to a TEQUILA SUNRISE …the levels of creativity
When are we getting the Mr. Zane documentary on Netflix?
This was my all-time favorite Ultimate Warrior wrestling attire. He looked so cool with something as simple as gloves. What little details can do.
It's crazy Goldberg isn't on this event, but he was on the VHS cover of the event
That damn trap door. Couldn't they find a way for Warrior to come out from under the ring, without having that in the ring!?
Because if so, British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith, might still be here with us today.
Thanks for the review Brian
