When Trump announced that he was running in 2015 then I had applied for a visa to the UK, and thankfully got in before his presidency had begun. Can highly recommend being out of the US at a time in which Donald Trump might be president.
Leaving the US because of opposition to the winning candidate is different this time. People are not leaving due to differences in policy, they're fleeing the threat of an authoritarian state.
Like you, I left the country almost 20 years ago. Absolutely no regrets. Sure am glad I moved then as I would definitely be looking now as I am not what Project 2025 wants
It's not Trump but the sad state of the mindset of people that voted for him...and I'm a Republican, distinguished veteran and I despise what's happened to our country.
You're certainly right in the sense that these people in the rest of the Maga party, and the people who vote for them could have ended this nightmare anytime they wanted to, they could've turned their backs on this monster, and they didn't.
@@everock9436 There are a lot of people like you, but you need to leave soon. Being aware and being one of many did not save the Jews in Nazi Germany. This is just such a time in just such a place. Best of luck to you, and may you live long and happy lives.
I agree. I need to have a second hip replacement and once I’ve got that in place I’m gonna retire and move to Europe so I’m just looking at options on this post and I haven’t thought of some of these. I might be interested though.
To all the people in the comments saying people on the left never leave the US: Many of us do take the leap. Been living in Norway for six months and it’s been wonderful:
I left already the States, but not for political reasons. Having studied in Germany, I grew to like this country, with its strong social system. We live in the Toscana of Germany. It is warm in the summer and mild in the winter. I do not miss American corporate greed and tax avoidance.
Wunderbar! If I leave- unless Germany goes nuts too (far right)- it's where I'd go. It's my mother's 1st home, I have cousins and relatives there along with at least 1 friend. I'm not fluent, but I can speak some German and with a little practice, I'm sure I'd be ok.
Yes, Germany is quickly becoming the land of the pensioners. At some point the system will break under its own weight and the social contract will have to be renegotiated, but depending on how old you are, it may or may not affect you directly. Did you give up your US citizenship? Also, Toscana of Germany, what did you mean by that? Did you mean "Ticino" of Germany (as in the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland that's warmer both culturally and weather wise than the rest of that country)? What's analogous to Ticino in Germany? I would guess something like Konstanz or to be even more esoteric guess the German enclave within Switzerland called "Büsingen am Hochrhein"? Just a guess, don't have to give your real locality but a rough area... looking to retire back to Europe in the next 10-15 years and starting very, very preliminary scouting.
@@mva6044 Hi, I am away in Oman and have lots to do just now. Thanks for your interest. When I finally decided on a German future, I imagined dual citizenship. My first apöplikcyation failed. I argued that part of my income came from the States. Using the same argumentation I tried a second time. When I came to do formalities the authorities presented a document whereby I renounced US citizenship. In short, I acceded and am now 100% "German". From my upbringing I am American. My wife is German. We are horrified about the political scene especially because I served in the USAR and was raised in a conservative way. Our home is close to Baden Baden. It is warm. We harvest 2 weeks earlier than 100 km to the north, thus "Toscana of Germany". I do not regret my choice. In ghe States I already spoke German from my graduate studies and for personal reasons. No-one had an inkling in the 1990s that MAGA would strive for a dictatorship. I voted a couple of time Rep before expatriating- for the candidate, not the party. My family is partly Jewish, but I am not observant. I encounter no direct anti-Jewish sentiment, but it exists here and elsewhere.
German here: Do us a huge favor and do not move to cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or Cologne. Nearly all expats moving to Europe chose the capitals, leaving the housing market in huge disarray for the locals. Understandable if they are looking for other expats to network with, but they also miss out on the opportunity if getting to know charming slightly smaller cities and towns with a decent housing market and plenty of locals to interact with.
We wanted to leave in 2017 but jobs/family etc kept us here. Things have changed and I received my 5 year Japan visa (child of Japan born parent) earlier this year and already have a place in Osaka. Our plans were to dip our toes in and experience the adventure of living abroad. Today, having this all in place is the only thing calming my nerves.
Our family has chosen NZ … my niece, her husband and their 3 kids are already there and are thriving and encouraging all of us to join them asap!! We will not stick around for project 2025!!
My husband and I (and his kiwi best friend that works with him) are desperately trying to make this happen! But it's a 2-3 year process for us so I'm terrified, well we both are really.
what is project 2025? oh...yea, that is the thing that Trump told everyone was he has nothing to do with it. debunked, but people still pretend like it's a real thing for some weird reason...odd.
You do realize that most countries mentioned has great social benefits and free health care that right now U.S. citizens can only dream of. I am Canadian and the only place I'd like to move to is New Zealand, I'm a big fan of Maori culture.
New Zealand would be my first choice but I’m too old for their work visa to citizenship pathway. Canada would be second choice but for the cost of living, I’ve only ever had a single working class income so my Social Security isn’t going to be great, and now I’m going to have to take it before full retirement age because elder caregiving is bankrupting me.
I currently live/work in Lisbon, Portugal. Over the past 30+ years I have lived/worked in 10 countries - Middle-East, Asia, elsewhere in Europe. It is not so easy to move to another country, unless (like I did) you work for a company or in a profession (teaching for me), that wll enable you to get proper visas/residencies/etc. There is also the 'culture shock' of leaving your familiar community/family/friends and starting anew elsewhere. Moving abroad is not for the faint of heart.
I am a teacher and would like to teach English as a second language. Can you guide me through the process to teach in other countries. I have an Associates Degree but in school now to complete my bachelors degree.
@@iverholt6983 We are all so fortunate to have these computers and the internet to use. Do a search on teaching abroad, and/or international ESL/EAL teaching jobs. There are many sites offering information. Different countries may have certain restrictions/requirments. There are also agencies that sponsor both on-line and in-person recruitment 'fairs'. You can do a search for those as well. Good luck!
@@iverholt6983I’d compete your bachelors degree, before looking to teach English. I know that South Korea, Japan and Taiwan needs a bachelors. For South Korea, I used Hands Korea, but many have used Krovia, and a few others.
If you're really worried about your kids, then hope the ditz and the putz don't find a way to get elected. The ditz already told a youth who said "Jesus is Lord" that they are at the wrong rally. If you vote for the ditz, you've swallowed the narrative the Dems and media have falsely created. You've already experienced the good times of trump's economy.
It's the left's hatred of Trump that has made politics toxic. In a typical Harris speech she mentions Trump 25 times. In a typical Trump speech he mentions her twice. If you want to win another election get some policies instead of just hating the opponent.
@LeeRoss-bw3yd I hired a Canadian immigration lawyer. Which I highly recommend if you can afford it because their is mountains of paperwork. There are a few avenues you can take and they can advise the best route for your circumstances. It took us about a year from start to finish but so worth it. After 3 years being a legal resident I became an Canadian citizen. Good luck my friend!
It’s important to remember that every European country with a strong social welfare system, work/life balance, publicly funded medical care, and all the other aspects of life that are assumed to be of value to Democratic US citizens, also have similar societal pressures, anti-immigration sentiments, growing resentment of green initiatives, and surging right-wing parties fueled by all of the above. And unless you are able to claim citizenship by descent, you will not be able to vote in your adopted country for at least five years, or in some cases even longer. Leaving the US is an opportunity to get out of the immediate vicinity of a certain brand of chaos, but it doesn’t allow us to stick our heads in the sand - and chaos has a way of spreading, too. Bon courage. 🇪🇸 🇵🇹 🇫🇷
A right wing party is ultimately ok when there are several parties to choose from. In the US both parties are right wing, although as long as trump is alive his 3rd party (MAGA) is centered around him as an autocratic leader and is extremely right wing. We have no ability to have even a third party to be more moderate, so even other weak democracies offer more choice and support for most people.
@@vtxgenie1You make a fair point, but as shown in France recently, it often comes down to a left-leaning coalition vs a right-leaning coalition eventually
@@shinyshinythings But forming a coalition government with people across the spectrum is much better than struggling to choose between the Center-Right Party and the Right (or increasingly Far-Right) Party in the US. You just have to find a country that hasn't completely sold out to the neoliberal idea that government should be sold off piecemeal to corporations for profit instead actually being for the benefit of citizens and residents.
There are a lot of negative and immature comments in here. Guess I shouldn't be surprised. So I figured I would leave a positive one. Thank you for the information!
I have some froend who had the opportunity to work at an overseas position with his company in europe. They've been living there since late 2017. It started as a temporary move but it became permanent 2019. I've visited them once in the Netherlands after the pandemic and they love it. Their two young kids growing up like kids picked up speaking two other languages. Taxes are higher in europe but so is the quality of life.
Thanks Kristin. All the vitriol in many of the comments is one reason we’re actually considering moving out. America used to be a place where diverse ideas could be shared and discussed without so much hate. Too much polarization and intolerance these days. Thank you for the excellent content!

I ❤️ New Zealand! I visited there in 2019, for a month, stayed with a friend. Was impressed by the vibe there, friendly people, beautiful country with a bit of everything, and reasonable cost of living. Had I been younger, would have thought of moving there.
Great informative relocation support video. I’ve been living in Japan for over 22 years now. No where is perfect, but the pros outweigh the cons for me.
If you are going to Canada for a 180 day exploratory visit, please understand that any health care costs you incur you will have to pay up front, and out of pocket. It costs roughly $1000 out of pocket to be seen at a hospital ER. If you emigrate to Canada, be prepared to pay roughly 1/2 of your income in taxes (income, property, gasoline, carbon tax, sales tax, etc.) Go visit Canada, but don't get sick unless you have good travel insurance.

Money is a critical issue. I have friends who really struggle to make money remotely & they definitely don't want to work on local salaries. One of my friends in Panama has a worker for ALL Day at $30/day.
Thanks for putting this together Kristin. I actually enjoy France, and think it would be a nice retirement home. Sorry you received so many negative political comments from viewers. The US didn't used to be like this.
Thank you, Steve. I'm glad you found the video informative. I'm also dismayed by the quantity of negative comments, but perhaps that's part of the reason why ^some people aren't happy living in the U.S. anymore.
Do you actually think the response would have been different if you made it for "If Harris Wins"? The rhetoric on both sides is inflammatory, and the vids title is intentionally so.
Retired and living permanently in Thailand. All the places you describe are good choices. For me, it is the cold of winter I wish to avoid. New Zealand is great but not so easy to get into. Costa Rica is great, if you have lots of money. As a retired high school teacher I am not quite in that category. But simple living, great food and year round warmth, (and good friendly people), Thailand for me.
I swear with all my heart and soul if I had the money and could afford it I would move to New Zealand. I can't afford to leave the US and I feel trapped. It's a lot of red tape getting a visa and applying for residency in another country. I'm scared of what's going to happen next week. God please watch over us. Amen.
For MAGA moron. There is only one place you can move. The Antarctic! Nobody there. You have it all for yourself. You can build your MAGA world. Take Elon Musk and the Trump clan with you! And one thing. DO NOT MOVE TO WHERE I LIVE! Thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. As a transgender American, the gate spewed towards us by the GOP is sickening. Way too reminiscent of 1936 Germany. Even if Harris wins, the hate in this nation is so palpable towards our neighbors, I'll be leaving at some point anyway.
Hi Kristin-- I'm a huge fan of yours, your videos helped me make the GREAT decision to move to Mexico as a person who chooses to live a minimalist/high quality lifestyle. I quit my airline job-- and now I travel more than I did as a Flight Attendant because I'm a Digital Nomad saving tons of money for confirmed seats instead of 'standby' employee seats (where we often get bumped 2-3 times every leg)... I'd rather just pay. I am a NEVER Trumper and am appalled that nearly 50% Americans seem to think a convicted criminal is a good candidate to run our country. Okay....NOT. If Kamala wins, I will move back to Jacksonville Beach FL, which is my favorite city in the country and travel from there....but until then--- I'm happy to be living near wonderful, kind people in a 3-bed, 2-bath very nice house in a walkable city outside of Mexico City and my portion of the rent is less than $400. I rent out the other 2 bedrooms to a really nice young bi-lingual woman and her 8-year-old son who were deported from US after living there 18 years. Life is good:-)
How is Australia not on your list? Ppl around the world would give their eye teeth to live here. Universal health care, good wages and plenty of sunshine 😊
Too many woke idiots in power though, sending the country down the toilet. Criminals allowed out by woke judges, while a pregnant woman had her door kicked down and was handcuffed in front of her kids for saying covid lockdowns were too harsh.
Seems to me that Australia might be one of the countries most harmed by droughts arising from climate change. But , to be sure, that might be decades from now
@Herman47 It's a big country with droughts in some areas, floods in others, and more extreme climate conditions generally, tks to climate change. Already happening all over the world, in any case. Did u see the footage of Spain's recent floods? Scary AF.
I've spent a lot of time there, have friends there and yes, it's a pretty great place (although there's the feeling there as well that they've somewhat lost their way in some aspects). It IS expensive, however. I could say much the same about Switzerland too. Both might be a little tougher in terms of requirements too, but yes, both places are good places.
These are both great videos! I lived abroad for several years and hope to do so again at some point regardless of who wins. I love that I've visited several of the countries you listed (Canada, France, Germany, Costa Rica) and the others are on my bucket list.
Thank you so much for this video! While I think I will stay in the US if Trump wins, I think the anxiety will be overwhelming. I was anxious all during his first term because of the brutality and chaos. This time, I will be on his "enemy within" list, so may actually be in danger of arrest or other harassment. I am 73 years old, so well-settled in my US lifestyle. Since language would be a barrier, what you said about Canada and France were both good for me, although I worry about expense. Most of all, this video has lowered my anxiety level. I think Harris will win due to the extreme enthusiasm -- greater than during any previous election -- even when Obama was running. But the polls are so close. Therefore, it was nice to pin down some possibilities just in case Trump wins.
What brutality and chaos? I'm genuinely curious. The BLM riots seemed quite brutal and chaotic especially in some places, is that what you're referring to?
@dianeweaver3928 According to trump there will never be another election and if there is it's going to be hacked. I wish I had a shit load of money to leave. I'm stuck. It will be worse cuz there is no hope things will go back to the way it was. We're sxrewed. Even if you live in a blue state

Losing a parent can be traumatic, i lost both of my parents as a teenager. Keeping this in mind, you were blessed to have parents as long as you did. By the time one is 45, unless one's parents were very young when they gave birth, one has limited time left with parents.
I just got back from Costa Rica. Loved it,I went to SCUBA dive,(that sucked). But the "Pura Vida" lifestyle is nice. I was waiting for a warm-weather nation to pop up. The best diving is off "liveaboards". But the country is magnificent. Warning. If you think you are going to explore those "rain forests" on your own Think again, unless your name is Tarzan. They have Panthers,(Spotted and black), The 6' + constrictor snakes, are not "Invasive" they live there. The poisonous snakes look like rocks or weeds, and some ground birds look like poisonous snakes. There is a popular bridge where people go to watch the "gators bask". I asked my guide, "Are those alligators (Caymans), or Crocodiles? He said, "Both my friend". And there is a reason why Costa Ricans call the white-faced monkeys "The Mafia". They steal anything edible or shiny. And if you came up in a working-class neighborhood where people kept dogs for security, that barked all night, you haven't heard anything until the "Howler monkeys" start at 3AM. But that's stuff I can live with. NOT another Trump term.
@@Peter-m5n7m "Smart government!" When seen close up, I wouldn't really agree, and that applies in differing degrees to both flavours of government in recent times. Norway and Scandinavia generally are great at projecting a certain image of responsible governance, and they may indeed be more progressive compared to certain other nations, but on environmental issues, to take just one policy area, these countries are pioneers of hypocrisy. Nice that the transport sector is being electrified. Not so nice that oil and gas exploration is likely to be sustained for many decades, justified with weak excuses of "transitions", when the real reason is that the money is just too good. And yet the amusing thing is that, contrary to international perceptions, you'll hear exactly the same arguments about there not being enough money for public projects as you will in places like the UK where the state is supposedly hard-up. Then there is the matter of regressive, neoliberal policy accompanied by nativism and culture warfare being seen as attractive traits to be imported from places like the US and UK into local politics. It isn't more comforting hearing cowardly, anti-foreigner rhetoric just because it emerges from the mouth of a blonde woman, to take but one example.
Honestly every American should consider the systems in countries elsewhere, no matter who wins. The USA could then learn how to do comprehensive healthcare, how to create a fair, progressive and effective taxation system for the common good, how to spend money on education and the social universal good instead of mainly on just the military, and why its so important to get big money out of politics. Other countries have these things - its not impossible.
It's not that simple. US pays more to help out other countries, to go "green" which isn't working out as well as promised and ESPECIALLY bc the US keeps the oceans free of pirates (we are pretty much the only ones!) Plus paying the majority of the costs of NATO which means all of Europe can spend their money differently. Plus the immigration issues are happening in ALL of these countries and they are ALL starting to collapse under the strain. It's not as simple or as wonderful as advertised
There are no perfect countries (maybe Norway and Switzeland are getting close). I'm an immigrant and I chose the USA after having traveled to many countries on different continents. There is a reason why millions of immigrants come to the States from all over the world. No "free" healthcare? Who cares if the country provides plenty of opportunities to make money and buy your own insurance. Less taxes than in most of developed countries mean you can save more for what is important for you. Safety nets are not free and government will abuse money it gets.
Really? The democrats are destroying America and people really seem incapable of seeing this. How do yo explain open borders? What possible sanity can there be in that for example? But somehow letting 11 million random unvetted people into the US is better than no war, lower prices, safe communities a thriving economy? WTF?
The only affordable country in that list is Costa Rica, the cost of living is about 1500 US a month, so if you have an internet job being paid in US dollars, you should be golden.
That's more of a salary for the Philippines not CR. I live in Panama & people leave CR for Panama because cost of living is less here. The only way to live on $1500 is to own a property free and clear. Food is less than the US, but its still not cheap here.
France can be very affordable. Tax treaty, healthcare, and reciprocal drivers license make it a no brainer. Religious influence is also not a problem in France like it is in the US. My planning to move there has nothing to do with the election, my money will go much further. Been researching potential countries for a few years.

I love Portugal and the good news is that its people got fed up with woke nonsense, just like America, and threw out the lefftist government earlier in 2024 and replaced it with center-right. Your "orange sadist" nonsense is now kind of restricted to California, Cuba and Venezuela now.

I've been testing Italy but the topography is a bit hard. Canada and the UK both have no visa requirements for US citizens, so you could split time that way.
Retirees can stay in many countries long term. There are many low cost of living countries that welcome retirees. A lot of countries have implemented visa that allow remote workers to stay long term.

Watching this from the UK which is literally falling apart in every way unless you're rich, makes me realise how far we have fallen. Following along after the USA like their poodle is a bit of a mistake.
As an immigrant I think that it will be a great blessing if people move to another country after these elections. They'll get a different perspective of the world and perhaps create a model-country for the rest of the world, that will prove that socialism works and bring like-minded people together. On the other, hand those that fled Cuba, Venezuela, and other communist European countries perhaps will have the opportunity to make tangible their 'American dream'. We won't have to be divided. We just need to relocate according to our beliefs and principles...
I'd really like to move to New Zealand, but apparently NZ doesn't want us. I'm 67 and retired with SS and a pension, and wife is almost 65 with a pension, and about to start getting SS. We have a slightly-disabled daughter for whom we provide all support, and we have over $600K in assets. I simply cannot continue to live here in trump's nightmare. Can anyone help us get to NZ, please?
New sub here! I am so happy this popped up for me, I was just looking into Canada bc I hadn't thought of these other places. This is so helpful. I will be watching your vids on the places that are most realistic for us and contacting you once we narrow it down. Thank you so much!

A year ago today, I submitted my application for German citizenship by descent (second generation here still in contact with relatives there). The Consulate General office said the process can take 2-3 years. We'll see if my application is approved. Whether I actually move or not is up in the air, but the good thing about German citizenship is that you are also an EU citizen, so it would be possible to move to other EU countries (perhaps with a little effort).
Great Video, but I have to correct you in one point according Germany. Chancellor Merkel - while being great and moderate - still was a member of the conservative democratic party, which is equivalent of the right wing republican party . Olaf Scholz is a member of the social democratic party leaning more left of the middle. But our System has more parties left and right of those, and the divide is nowhere near as drastic as in the US.
Sorry, but the CDU is not equivalent to the Republicans, not by a long shot. They may be moving further to the right as of late, but they're still worlds apart from the fascist Republicans. The actual Republican analog would be the AFD, who have even copied some of the rhetoric from the US nazis. Our conservatives may have their own issues, but to say they're equivalent to the Republicans is just straight-up incorrect.
That's a good idea. I'm not sure I'm the best person to make that video since I don't have personal experience, but my friend Amanda, The Black Expat, might have some content about that. Her website is theblackexpat.com/
FYI, since the late 90s, many people have said that they would move if candidate "x" would win. For example, Rush Limbaugh famously said that he would move to Costa Rica if Hillary Clinton had beaten Donald Trump in the 2016 elections. Note that Costa Rica (as Kristin mentioned) has universal healthcare and a strong social system, so it was likely that Limbaugh may not have been happy there. (On a side note, "Ottowa" is spelt "Ottawa").

Feel those small moments of being alive.
In choosing the country, keep in mind that the results of this election will have repercussions worldwide. For example, if the U.S. pulls out of NATO, that will embolden Putin to set his sights on other countries that have been victims of Russian expansionism in the past, such as Norway. I’m not saying that it will happen, just that other countries will be affected by what happens in the U.S. so expats will have to make strategic decisions.
I lived and worked in Sweden for 10 years and also took the time to immediately get the paperwork and documents needed to begin the process of applying and getting dual citizenship! Best decision I’ve ever made. It’s a process that takes time and isn’t cheap but if it’s going to be where you live going forward then it’s a decision you will want to make soon because it’s a process that can take more then just a year or two get accomplished! Also make sure you check out your passport and the expiration date! Some countries require your passport is valid for up to 6 months or more before expiration date. !
Surprised you didn't mention the U.K.During my (quite long)life I've met quite a few Yanks who have lived here for ages and every one of them said that they would never go back
It seems national health care is one of the most important attributes of other countries being better places to live than the US. Wouldn't it be much better and easier to simply bring national health care to the US?
I’m staying in the U.S. regardless of which candidate wins the presidency. We had Trump and Biden and the country survived both presidents with little effect on my life. The USA is a beautiful country.
Me too bittersweetly & it would be too difficult for me & my husband to move out of it for many reasons even if we really wanted to. Plus are there really any safe accepting countries in the rest of the world that won't deport expatriate former or dual citizen Americans back to the USA, either willingly or if they were threatened with dangerous consequences if they didn't do so, under any circumstances? That's something any Americans considering leaving the USA should think about!
@@maxinezook4618 I have been to 11 countries with the same concern of long term acceptance if I should retire there. Ireland is quite safe as a choice for permanent residence though.

Indeed
There is "USA" anymore. We are two countries that hate each other, occupying the same space.
It's the left's hatred of Trump that has made politics toxic. In a typical Harris speech she mentions Trump 25 times. In a typical Trump speech he mentions her twice. If you want to win another election get some policies instead of just hating the opponent.

If you emigrate to Canada, be prepared to pay roughly 1/2 of your income in taxes (income, property, gasoline, carbon tax, sales tax, etc.) Go visit Canada, but don't get sick unless you have good travel insurance.

Life is good:-)
So, you're coming back if Kamala the Commie wins? Interesting choice to live under the rulership of a Commie. To each his own.
I'm sticking it out through the reminder of Biden's Presidency, but after that I seriously would like to move.

Norway is on my 2025 bucket list. Awesome people! Smart government!
@@Peter-m5n7m "Smart government!"
When seen close up, I wouldn't really agree, and that applies in differing degrees to both flavours of government in recent times.
Thank you. Best comment here.
I'm not waiting months for a simple doc visit.
Perhaps MAGA would be more at home in Russia. Sorry Kristen, it is a interesting video and well done.
Really? The democrats are destroying America and people really seem incapable of seeing this. How do yo explain open borders? What possible sanity can there be in that for example? But somehow letting 11 million random unvetted people into the US is better than no war, lower prices, safe communities a thriving economy? WTF?
Also North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Equatorial Guinea!
This video has become more pertinent. It would be great to continue to expand this list ASAP. Thanks!

I've been testing Italy but the topography is a bit hard. Canada and the UK both have no visa requirements for US citizens, so you could split time that way.
The problem with this idea of leaving is that only the wealthy or the young with needed job skills can gain residency in most countries.
There are other, cheaper places. I'll ask her to do such. She's been to'em all so she can do so.
Retirees can stay in many countries long term. There are many low cost of living countries that welcome retirees. A lot of countries have implemented visa that allow remote workers to stay long term.
