UK and no I'm not talking about London. UK as in Wales, Scotland, N. Ireland and England. Many places to live. I lived on the western Scottish seacoast for 400.00 for a 1 bedroom furnished flat. Sea to the front and Mts to the back. For those who don't mind a tiny island tourist atmosphere Gibraltar is also English speaking under British rule.
How about Sweden? Though English isn't the official language, the Swedes speak better English than the Filipinos and Singaporeans! I was just there over the summer. My Airbnb cost me $1000/mo and $200/mo for food. I didn't live in the center of Stockholm. However, their public transportation was so convenient that I could travel from Solna, where my Airbnb was, to Stockholm's central station in 11 minutes.

I'm really happy that you listed one of my favorite countries, Malta! In fact, Valletta is my favorite city in the world thus far. They have excellent bus service in Malta, which is both the name of the country and the island. You'll learn how Maltese is pronounced by riding the buses, which have automated announcements for the stops. Mdina has been occupied continuously for almost 3000 years, and at the Citadel in Victoria they still have the original cornerstone, which reads in Latin: "Dedicated to the Emperor at Rome" and a date that translates to 103 AD. The Papal Secretary is based in Valletta, and the Maltese like to say they're "more Catholic than the Vatican". St. Paul's Bay is named after the Apostle Paul, as the site where he ended up when his ship sank. The War Museum in Valletta has weapons from the Great Siege, when the Ottoman empire attempted to conquer Malta and was repulsed by the natives and the Knights Hospitaller, in what was called "The Crusaders Last Stand". The Nazis also tried to conquer Malta, but never got around to it, so they just dropped a LOT of bombs on it. Napoleon was more successful, but was ejected by the Maltese later on. Malta is a country rich in history, as you may have gathered. Some of "The Game of Thrones" was filmed there, in fact. Plan on visiting the museums! There is a ferry from Malta to Mgarr (Gozo) that leaves frequently. There's a liquor store on board, and they sell supplies so you can have a party on the ship if you like. The ride takes 25 minutes, so I think that says a lot about their priorities, which are firmly in the right place. If you're not an EU citizen, you can still work in Malta with a blue card, which they approve based on skills they need, which nearly always include medical personnel, but also include computer specialties AND online gaming. One nice thing about Malta? NO Property tax! Anyway, thank you Kristin for another great video, and everyone else you should visit Malta if you can. (It's about 70 miles south of Sicily.)
I retired to Thailand so language is obviously not a barrier to me. The retiree community is sharply split on this issue. I think that for many retirees language is less of a concern. It is pretty easy to get around with only a modest grip of a foreign language. The others can’t fathom moving to a country that doesn’t speak English. The Philippines is full of expats for whom English language is a top criteria.

It is however so that aside of native English speaking countries (Canada, UK, Australia) Germany tops the list of most popular countries for American Expats. Almost 3 times more than in France. I am not surprised, and you can easy find many RUclips channels telling story about living in Germany. The same can be observed in the opposite direction: I am a German Expat living and married in California. We have a ton of expats, and aside of Indians and Chinese, expats from Europe are very numerous here.
Germany is wonderful! I have lived in the Upper Harz for six years. It is necessary, however, in the area where I live to speak German. Permanent residency and citizenship both require B1 level German as a minimum. ❤
I remind other Commenters that the Netherlands has overseas possessions that are, legally, co-equal to the homeland: Aruba, Curacao, Sint Maartin. You can also live in these territories and make your way to PR or Citizenship if you want another option.
How about Poland? I’ve been to G’Dansk, Sopot, Warsaw and Krakow, affordable and English spoken every where. Beautiful cities and friendly people ( even when I spoke only 2 words of Polish). Lots to see and I can’t wait to go back!
I like the Netherlands, they have good bicycle paths and there’s more reasons, however there are very high taxes. If you speak German, you can usually understand Dutch since my second language is German, and I most of what they said when they were talking to someone else.

I actually rather look for a country that most people don’t speak English. I much rather assimilate to the culture than people speaking English with me.
Speaking as an Englishman, I think Singapore is cheap, but that's by comparison with where I come from, I appreciate it might look different to people from other countries. With the exception of housing, where you may have to manage by trimming your expectations, Singapore doesn't have to be expensive. Sure you can spend $100 on dinner for two - or many times that - but there's really no need to unless you want to, nor do you have to resort to 'street food' for a good meal out (although that may be a matter of definition). You can live cheaply in Singapore if you want to. Transport in particular is cheap as chips.
Hi Kristin..I've been watching you for years now and I don't think I've seen you tackle the subject of moving possessions from the States to another country. (Cost, logistics, import tax etc). I know it's hard to do a 'generic vid' on this due to variance in import policies between countries...but generic would at least give some things to think over. I'm a musician and will NOT be 'selling all of my stuff' when I move abroad. Hope you're doing well in Florida.

Question: since Panama is one of the top 3 expat destinations worldwide could you ever do a deep dive on that country? You can choose to live in the city, on the Pacific, the Gulf or in a mountain. So there is a lot to explore. Can't think of anyone I'd rather see do it than you.

Considering the fact that Flanders have even a higher score than the Dutch concerning English and have had that for decades I'm very surprised no mention of Belgium (where a vast majority of people are tri-lingual) , add to that all kinds of international companies as well as lots of official HQ's such as NATO, SHAPE and the EU, high quality of healthcare and very much a logistics hub for Europe, world diamond center, 2nd biggest harbor in Europe, high level of safety etc.

In US, I love New England side especially Bar harbour in Maine, Massachusetts, and Certain parts of Florida, Washington DC, Oregon,Tennessee etc. There're many in US.! In UK, I love Scotland, Ireland, and many other pristine villages of UK.! And you're looking so pretty.😊
I am surprised Germany is not on the list. I have visited multiple German cities small and large, almost every one speaks English fluently. And Germans are extremely helpful, contrary to popular belief, IMHO. I am thinking of living in Berlin for the Spring/ Summer after I retire next year.
That’s only true in certain cities like Berlin. The under 30 crowd can speak English but older people are not comfortable speaking. Plus the immigrants to Germany don’t speak English either and they do a lot of customer facing jobs
I think she went by percentage of population. Technically still only about half of Germans speak fluent English. Obviously more people in Berlin though.
Yes during dry season, malaysia is hot and humid. Between April and September. But this period, you will see many wildlife like orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys.

You didn't mention Namibia. English is its official language. Namibia is one of the least populated countries, has magnificent landscapes, and amazing wildlife. I would rank Namibia way over South Africa as a place to live.
Hi I love your show, I am looking to get a plan B and C place to live and or invest in. Looking for a place that is safe, great culture and food, universal healthcare, low cost of living, very low crime rate is really important to us, less polarized than the United States, has predominatly english speaking population. I'll be honest: if I'm moving to another country, I would want the challenge of learning a new language. It keeps your brain sharp. But I wouldn't do South Africa. The crime and "race issues" make it a no-go for me.
I lived in South Africa for 2 years. Staying out of the big cities, you will be generally safe, and staying on the Reserves. They are always looking for long term volunteers. Which usually includes Your Housing, and just the cost of food. I lived there very well. However, it's the Healthcare for me. Not great. Schools for Children also not great. But generally it's a wonderful Country, English us number one, and The SA are I found some of the friendliest in the World. I am a World traveler. Even for Holidays.
As as person who owns a home in the USVI, you will learn that the US Territories are not America. Yes, the residents are Americans, however many aspects of live are significantly different than living in the States. For one, the general cost of living is significantly 50-100% or more expensive than that of many US states.
Singapore is #1 ?, hmmm yes their English is super great..but cost of living is out of sight and in some respects is higher than New York City…perhaps you can make a list of cheap affordable ENGLISH speaking countries for American expats to retire in.. I guarantee you Singapore will not be on that list !,
English speaking countries only apply to countries that had a history with the British Empire and English is the native language of the people. for example, New Zealand is an English speaking country because it has ties with Britain and the British Empire.
Visited Antwerpen Belgium and found it very nice, plenty of english spoken The Netherlands sounds good too, except for the COLD WEATHER MY other BEST place that speaks english is MALTA, found it very interesting and a nice place to spend time. LOT of jobs there but they won't even look at you unless you are physically there

With over a decade as a PR in the Philippines, you omitted the very poor air quality in Philippines big cities and even smaller cities. Respiratory diseases are all too common in the Philippines. Poor Health and poor health care contribute to the very low healthspan and low life expectancy.
Moreover: if you look at the stats, in real life Holland does not make the list for Expats from America. Germany tops the list, Switzerland is probably 1st per capita, and of course the classic destinations Italy and Spain are also very prominent. France is of course also on the list, but in most cases require ability to speak French proficiently.

Hi Kristin..again I'm in a dilemma which country is the best for me! And I find that, certain parts of US and UK are my favorites, despite the drawbacks if any.! In US, I love New England side especially Bar harbour in Maine, Massachusetts, and Certain parts of Florida, Washington DC, Oregon,Tennessee etc. There're many in US.! In UK, I love Scotland, Ireland, and many other pristine villages of UK.! And you're looking so pretty.😊
What are your priorities? For example, If you’re wanting affordable or sunny weather that really narrows that list down! 🤞🏼
I think you may need to do your research a bit more. Ireland is not in the UK. It's an independent Republic with no links to the UK.

I am surprised Germany is not on the list. I have visited multiple German cities small and large, almost every one speaks English fluently. And Germans are extremely helpful, contrary to popular belief, IMHO. I am thinking of living in Berlin for the Spring/ Summer after I retire next year.
That’s only true in certain cities like Berlin. The under 30 crowd can speak English but older people are not comfortable speaking. Plus the immigrants to Germany don’t speak English either and they do a lot of customer facing jobs
I think she went by percentage of population. Technically still only about half of Germans speak fluent English. Obviously more people in Berlin though.
Yes during dry season, malaysia is hot and humid. Between April and September. But this period, you will see many wildlife like orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys.

Fortunately, the Philippines has so many beautiful places beyond the capital, like Palawan and Cebu, that offer a more relaxed and scenic experience. Have you visited any of these spots?

My Filipino friends talk a lot about violent crime there. Is that really a big problem there, especially for white expats?

You didn't mention Namibia. English is its official language. Namibia is one of the least populated countries, has magnificent landscapes, and amazing wildlife. I would rank Namibia way over South Africa as a place to live.

Hi I love your show, I am looking to get a plan B and C place to live and or invest in. Looking for a place that is safe, great culture and food, universal healthcare, low cost of living, very low crime rate is really important to us, less polarized than the United States, has predominatly english speaking population. My family and I just want to live somewhere with more community feel where people are kind to one another. Less likely to be involved in future wars. I have children I would like to raise in a place where there isnt so much hate and division.

I'll be honest: if I'm moving to another country, I would want the challenge of learning a new language. It keeps your brain sharp. But I wouldn't do South Africa. The crime and "race issues" make it a no-go for me.
I lived in South Africa for 2 years. Staying out of the big cities, you will be generally safe, and staying on the Reserves. They are always looking for long term volunteers. Which usually includes Your Housing, and just the cost of food. I lived there very well. However, it's the Healthcare for me. Not great. Schools for Children also not great. But generally it's a wonderful Country, English us number one, and The SA are I found some of the friendliest in the World. I am a World traveler. Even for Holidays.

How do USA territories rank for relocating Americans?
As as person who owns a home in the USVI, you will learn that the US Territories are not America. Yes, the residents are Americans, however many aspects of live are significantly different than living in the States. For one, the general cost of living is significantly 50-100% or more expensive than that of many US states.
Percent-wise, more people speak English in the Netherlands than in Canada.

English speaking countries only apply to countries that had a history with the British Empire and English is the native language of the people. for example, New Zealand is an English speaking country because it has ties with Britain and the British Empire.

The Netherlands sounds good too, except for the COLD WEATHER
MY other BEST place that speaks english is MALTA, found it very interesting and a nice place to spend time. LOT of jobs there but they won't even look at you unless you are physically there

Why are most Americans afraid to learn another language? I speak a few languages and I have friends here in Europe that speak at least five languages.
I think because it's easier to learn a language when you're little, and we don't start to learn a second language until high school and then think it's hard.

With over a decade as a PR in the Philippines, you omitted the very poor air quality in Philippines big cities and even smaller cities. Respiratory diseases are all too common in the Philippines. Poor Health and poor health care contribute to the very low healthspan and low life expectancy.

Moreover: if you look at the stats, in real life Holland does not make the list for Expats from America. Germany tops the list, Switzerland is probably 1st per capita, and of course the classic destinations Italy and Spain are also very prominent. France is of course also on the list, but in most cases require ability to speak French proficiently.
