    Alvin,
    Excellent, my friend. Lots accomplished. I take back the slacker accusation. 😁 .0005% down, a million more % to go. Thanks for showing me how easy that emergency brake cable rubber plug popped out of the floor hole. I didn't expect it. I'm now feeling all confident and brave to try it with mine.
    Take a short rest. You deserve it. See you next time.
    Regards,
    John

      I have to say, there isn't a lot of extra space to work in that area!
      I will be taking a little break to work on the Ranchero, but not a long break! lol

    I'm in the process of pulling a 390 out of a 1966 Bird, 2nd time, this time. The flex plate may may have numbers in the space between the ring gear, hard to off the wall match it, mine was "lost", the matching for a replacement was not easy, got one finally.

      I'm glad you were able to get one, some of the odd ball parts are getting hard to find these days.

    That's one issue when working on old cars - if they are old enough, you bet your bottom dollar that there will not be too many bits where somebody's not been there before you. Not an issue if they done it right, but oh boy, it can sometimes lead to big headaches if they done it wrong! Lets hope you don't find to much like that on this old T-Bird. Well at least back when she was built cars were made of tougher stuff - not too much aluminium for people to strip the threads out of, and virtually no plastic for people to snap the tabs off of! But, whatever you do or do not find, i am enjoying being along for the ride.

      Thanks for being along for the ride...and I promise not to be too hard on the previous repairs, I have no idea what the situation was at that time. I will cover what I find just the same, it's a part of the journey! 😊😊😊

    i have a question for ya. i just purchased a 1965 thunderbird...and...i was wondering where to use the bumper jack on it....does it actually go under the bumper? and if it does...where does it go....and if I use a floor jack where do I place it to remove my left front tire.....thank you ahead of time.

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  5 дней назад

      Hi John,
      To use the bumper jack, you attach the big J hook looking piece to the jack, and that hooks under the bump.
      But honestly, a floor jack is much better, behind the front wheel well, there is a flat surface, and ahead of the rear wheel, there is also a flat surface...those are the lift points for a hoist or floor jack.
      These are the bottom plate for the torque boxes, and are the strongest point for lifting.
      I also like to use a shirt piece of 2x4 with the floor jack, it prevents denting the lifting areas...just my preference.

If you want to see a treasure trove of excellent rust repair videos...check out Fitzee's Fabrications on You Tube, Tony covers rust repair in a way that makes good sense, and with basic tools.

    There is a lot of "back and forth" on how the coil is mounted, horizontal mounted they tend to burn out, yours given that it is OEM mounted, is mounted vertical, I would like to think the way it is mounted is the way Ford mounted it, eliminating the horizontal burn outs .

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  Год назад

      There seems to be a difference of opinion for sure, on my 73 351 4V, it was mounted in the horizontal position from the factory...that tells me Ford was okay with the horizontal mounting of coils.
      I do wonder if the factory horizonal mounted coils are designed to allow them to be mounted in that manner...oil levels may be different from the vertical mounted ones? I really don't know, but I'll keep mine in the vertical position.

    • @gabei.3369
      @gabei.3369 Год назад

      Ford it is said had better quality control they were filled to capacity, allowing them to be placed either horizontally or vertically, the problem was and is the aftermarkets filling of the canister falls short. To avoid that, up the down stair case problem I use an epoxy filled coil.

    Engine on a 65 is semigloss black with gold valve covers and air cleaner. 66 was all ford blue.

      @J_R_Shop  3 года назад

      Thank Kevin! That is correct for all USA sold 64-65 T-Birds, however 64-65 T-birds sold to DSO 81 were suppose to be painted aluminum...this overlooked documentation on is why I was so focused on the engine paint. I have a photo of a pre-production 64 Mustang with a 260 2v engine also shipped outside of the USA that is the exact same paint color that is on my 390. Here is a link to the Mustang article www.mustangdriver.com/feature-articles/where-were-the-first-mustangs-built
      If you're interested, check out www.tbirdranch.com, and under "Concours specs" "64-66" it is also stated that DSO 81 the engine was painted aluminum.

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  3 года назад

      @@classics289 the valve covers and air cleaner were gold. Block, heads, oil pan were painted aluminum. One of the things I want to do after the body of the T-Bird is stripped, is to clean the engine really well and document the paint color...I think it's important information, and there aren't many of these DSO 81 car engines left, in original paint.

    Hello Alvin,
    Nice video on the tear down. Could you show the tag on the driver's door and/or a build sheet from under the seat? Just curious about what this T-bird was like out of the factory. It looks like it used to be a white car.
    Thanks,
    George B. in Michigan

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  3 года назад +1

      No problem George, I'll do that in my next video. I already know the build sheet is gone, when I first got the Bird, I took the rear seat out, and there was a small fragment of it still in the seat...but it was damaged too bad to read. What I know from the body tag, is that it was Wimbledon white, with white interior, and a white top...it's a tri white car.

    Thanks again. Like I’ve said, if you’re workin’ I don’t have to. I am not familiar with that engine. I’ve had 302’s, I am familiar with the 351, and I had an LTD with a 400 which was a poor engine. How does the 390 rate, and are you going to rebuild it?

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  3 года назад +1

      These 390's are a brut of an engine. This is the first one since 1981 that I've owned (67 Galaxie), I was pretty young, and extremely hard on it, it never let me down...as far as performance, I feel there are better Ford engine produced, but they these T-Bird engines @ 300hp still can get up and go. I will be taking the engine apart, what I find will determine the extent of the rebuild, it will need valve seats just to handle unleaded fuel...the rest is a mystery at this point.

    • @MattsRageFitGarage
      @MattsRageFitGarage 2 года назад

      390 rates good in my book. I have a very stock 390, stock intake and stock exhaust manifolds even with a mild camshaft in it and it way outperforms my aluminum headed 351w with a high rise 4 barrel intake, long tube headers, nice custom exhaust system that also has a mild camshaft in it and that thing runs really good. Mucho torque difference between the two! they both also get the same gas mileage - crap. I'll take the 390 any day.

    Are you rebuilding the cruise o matic or dropping a better trans in ? If so what type of upgraded c6 can bolt to a 390?

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  3 года назад +1

      The trans was working good, so I'll just be changing the filter, and cleaning it up, and reusing it...as far as the C6, there were many, many 390's with the C6 trans, any C6 mated to an FE engine will bolt on, there two things I would look at are how the gear selector works for you, the cruise O matic shift select is designed to take off in 2nd gear when in the D position, also the tail shaft housing length could be different, and require a different length of drive shaft.

    • @Tachdout
      @Tachdout 3 года назад

      Thank you for the quick response ,how do you decipher if it's a cruise o matic trans , if the car is equipped with cruise control would that be a give away?

    • @J_R_Shop
      @J_R_Shop  3 года назад +2

      @@Tachdout that's a pretty big question to unwrap! lol
      These transmission were widely used, and in many ford vehicles. I think you would be better off researching what all trans codes are, make yourself familiar with the look of them, and what vehicles they were installed in from the factory (and that's a lot), but having cruise control or not has no relation to what type of transmission is on the car...so you can't go by that.
      Start with this "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise-O-Matic", and go for there...if I try to explain all the variations in one reply, I'll be here all weekend typing, and still miss something! lol

      Not for DSO 81 (Canada), the blocks were painted aluminum for 64 & 65, this is a DSO 81 T-Bird. In the USA, yes, you are 100% correct.
