  • Lets talk about Stigma!!
Stigma Theory was developed by Canadian Sociologist Erving Goffman in the late 1960's.
In the opening of his text is a letter from a 16 year old girl in 1962 that writes
"... I sit and look at myself all day and cry. I have a big hole in the middle of my face that scares people even myself so I can not blame the boys for not wanting to take me out. My mother loves me but she cries terribly when she looks at me."
When I read this, I just hear the desperation in her voice, and felt all of the same things! Kids were afraid of me, and I felt ashamed of myself for a long time.
In this video we talk about stigma, the group identity - in group= "Normals" out of group= people who deviate from "normal" - such as my self.
We also introduce Eileen Bradury's work on an anticipatory guidance for children with physical disabilities.
