Probably not possible (but I bet it would be hysterically funny . . .) Thank you so much for all you do.

The Orchestral Section of KFL has a Legacy section (search the menu) that is a goldmine of old VSL Kontakt Orchestral Instruments, including some legatos and many mod wheel dynamic patches. If you can't afford anything but the full version of Kontakt, it's a terrific place to start for orchestral work. And they can easily be "refurbished" with SIPS and WIPS scripts.

Once again, amazing content that you do for us for FREE (which got me to buy a few ThinkSpace courses, so it worked, lol!). BOY do I have a request for subject matter for a video, that I know you could explain so well: As a somewhat newbie to all this, I don't yet understand the technique of WHEN and HOW to use or apply CC sliders for 1, 11, 7, etc for expression to make the instruments sound more realistic. I have a FaderPort 8 set up with awesome 100mm faders, but when playing strings or brass, WHEN do you push them up and down? For instance, for each staccato note do you pump the slider up and down? I'm sure there are MULTIPLE answers to this depending on articulation. I don't even know if I'm asking the right question... all I know is MANY of us could use coaching on the technique of expression and dynamic manipulation for strings, brass and I assume woodwinds. THANK YOU! -Paulie form Arizona

What key are we in Guy?

Tip for an other video...."To quantize or not to quantize" Does quantizing kill the spirit, the soul, the human touch of the music? Great vid! Really enjoyed it. Some comments/criticisms. When laying the "guitar" down, you still play like a keyboard player. Being a string player, i find it hard to get in the mindset of a keyboard player when writing (opposite problem). I get a much better outcome when I try put myself in that mindset of the player of that instrument and phrase things as that instruments player would phrase things. Things like bending notes instead of little grace notes and chord voicings. I get that these are quick sketches, just an observation. :)
Second, the factory sounds aren't terrible, but get a lot more usable if you go and tweak some of the settings. (ala pitch shift and some of the "effects" are rubbish and the patches sound better without them) again, I get it, you're doing out of the box, but if you're ever in a pinch for something odd ball they have in there, there are options to make them sound a bit better than the presets. Cheers!

Quick thought - when you’re making videos using Logic it would be great if you used a custom view of the LCD that shows "midi in”. It very helpfully shows what chord is being played on the keyboard. I’d find it really useful to be able to grab a sneaky peak at what voicings you’re using!

How many separate VST instruments do I need? Loved keyboard brass for the first time, but need a range of strings and ethnic instruments like the oud and some African stringed instruments, Asian shakuhachi, koto, as well as full orchestral sounds. Do these all require a range of different VST brands [for Cubase], and do I need plug in 'effects' beyond what comes with Cubase? [Still not sure whether I only have built in effects with the Cubase VSTi. With health/disabilities not giving me the time and speed to go through these on my own.]
Will be looking forward to a couple of weeks in hospital with laptop and MIDI keyboard soon, i.e. without life's worries of shopping for nutritious meals, or maybe not? Is hospital food any good?

Re Rhodes / wurly type soubds, I've discovered the Electric piano pack on pianoteq is mindblowing. Such a warm and fizzy kinda sound. I love it. Also regarding "realistic" guitar. Octave doubling is a thing, and Carlos Santana in particular kinda has that as a trade mark part of his sound. However you need to consider what articulations it works with. You cant play cross octave with a plectrum, so fast attacky passages definatel not. However plucked with fingers, its totally easy and natural, so with slightly slower passages and a roll the attack off a little (Like, a few millisencond , just enough to damp the transients) to emulate fingers.

Since kontakt is not cheap for a hobby musician to start with and other, more advanced libraries like Spitfire etc. are even MORE expensive on top, it is very interesting to see what the Kontakt factory sounds sound like in order to help me decide if getting Kontakt ist worth it even without being able to simultaneously pay 5 grand for additional 3rd party libraries :D So thank you for this video and if you're in the mood and have the time please do more with the Kontakt factory sounds so I can finally make up my mind. My issue with the factory presets is that the guitars and electric keys have similar sounds. The jazz guitar can sound really nice if you mix it right. I haven't found a preset guitar with a wah wah (the sound you were trying to figure out the name of) that I didn't make myself. Guitar Rig has some really good wah wah presets and you can also come up with some really interesting stuff with a pedal and a cpl of filter plug ins. Imagine a clavinet with the pedal controlling the resonance and cutoff at the same time.

Hey GUY! Really nice funky groove...
However, (this is coming from a PASSIONATE percussionist) I think you should take a look at the drums again... Cause, one, even on the pop kit, you can actually TUNE every single drum, plus you can layer different kits, just like the instruments in ONE midi channel! Plus the sound knob synthesizes the sounds making them sound... weird BUT fun! With snares you can even adjust simple articulations, and the 3 band eq can even be used to HEAVILY change the perceived “depth” of the samples!

Kontakt factory libraries are good...for beginners.

Guy, you're awesome, fabulously informative, entertaining and inspirational. I often find guitars are the one of hardest instruments to get a good sound for in computer music. If you were writing the the same piece again but with any instrument in your library, what would you swap in and how different would the finished product sound?
