NEW COURSE - LEARN MUSIC THEORY Hi everyone - just to let you know I’ve just released a brand new course, Learn Music Theory. Quick, practical and fun, it takes you from square one through to more advanced topics like modes and chromatic harmony. 9 hours of video, quizzes, course text and much more. Check it out here: thinkspaceeducation.com/courses/lmt/
Just bought it, and played it, it made me cry, thats very rare, been playing at the keyboard for three hours straight, its an amazing library, if spitfire dont snap that young lad up there is something wrong.
@john Wilson Spitfire has just released Originals Intimate Strings ($29, Albion II Recycled samples made from Flautando articulations) which sounds a bit similar so both are nice options and not too expensive!
It is great seeing low cost sample libraries reviewed but also shown how they can be used. Would be happy to see you do a video on more of Ben’s sample libraries
Love that breathy draw across the strings..wow impressive, this fellow seems so young, awsome to see such young talent. Wonder if he is interested doing some brass and woodwinds next...Hats off to you Mr Ben Osterhouse I am sure you have a great future ahead of you..
One of the best channels on RUclips. Well Done, Guy! I have learn't so much due to your wonderful way of presenting valuable musical tips, in such a humorous and entertaining manner, that literally exudes your love of life & music.
Thank you so much! There is a scene in Castaway, when Tom Hanks finally gets off of the island and looks back. The strings come up and it gets me every time- the feeling of sadness and / or lonleyness. They use it again when he looses his beloved "Wilson". It is a perfect example of (what I now know) is voice leading. Great Stuff!
I just wanted to say that your videos are an invaluable resource to a beginning, amateur composer like me. Not only are they extremely informative, insightful and helpful, they are also tremendously entertaining and very funny. Thank you Guy, truly! Calib
Absolutely splendid video on voice leading. I really love how entertaining you are in discussing it. There have been other videos I've looked into when I started orchestral producing and, sure they get the job done, but I believe this one is the most entertaining and fun to go through. Your personality is great and I love how genuine and passionate you are in these. Kudos!
Awesome! I mention in a comment in a previous video that I'd be interested in some theory behind your improvisational techniques and then you go and make this! Did you listen to me or is it a coincidence? I don't care, I'm very happy. More, please!
Your you tube videos are absolute gems. You plant so many seeds. It’s up to us to water & fertilize them. One thing I would request (if not too much trouble): In post, add the chord names on top of the video. Understandably, as creativity hits, it can take over (what a wonderful thing!) and commentary can sometimes have small gaps. It’s great seeing the keyboard from above, but it can be challenging to figure out the notes being played and the proper chord name. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and for sharing with such great flair and style!
I have viola de gamba and sospiro strings. I absolutely love Ben’s stuff. The guy is a superstar. I’m an orchestral noob but I’ve found his stuff gives a really organic intimate and natural sound. Works best when not too polyphonic. I use in conjunction with NOVO essentials because I don’t have thousands of dollars for libraries.
"What the reed warbler thinks he's doing in my bamboo is anybody's guess. It is a very confused reed warbler. It's nice to know that human beings aren't the only ones that get confused!" - Guy, are you sure you're mainly a composer ? Script writer and/or stand-up comedian seems also to be in the mix. This video sure made my day, still laughing - and on top of that we learn a lot from you as well every single time you put up a video. This time of ours is well-spent. Thank you !
When testing new synthesizers, I try every preset without tweaking anything. Strings are one of my favorite sound groups. Thanks for telling us about Ben's product. And more important, thanks for teaching us how to properly work with strings while composing.
Guy you crazy genius! Thank you for this. I bought your music writing course last week and loving it. I'm predominantly a rock guitarist but a frustrated soundtrack lover inside so my theory as you can imagine is rubbish. But you're making it easier to understand. Thank you! That Susperio library btw sounds amazing. Stay safe fella
Look at this! Guy now has 109,000 followers, when it was only 11 minutes ago that he had less than 100,000! He's breaking out! He'll be bigger than The Beatles soon! Good for him! He definitely gives good value. :-)
@@DarkSideofSynth A possible Music-based "Top Gear" team would be an idea for Guy. I have recently discovered his video and have been shopping for gear :)
Thank you Guy...you're awesome and I always learn from you. I wish I could sit in one of your classes in person to absorb as much as I can. Keep it coming
I really love this library and took the deep dive and invested in full Kontakt 6 and some Native control surfaces...I will certainly be investing in more of Ben’s instruments.👏👏😁🙏🎶🎩👍
I really enjoy watching you and how you approached your writing , I'm a rock musician I know only guitar bass and drum , try to learn more genre and then I'm here and you saved my day . thank you so much
"Where did you hide the body?" For a moment, I was afraid the body was found in the opening seconds of this video. (Great video--it's interesting to actually hear from a developer--even if I DO have socks older than he is.)
I love the fact that it is so expressive without even touching the mod wheel. This library sounds very much like the Planet Earth 2 main theme string sound by Hans Zimmer
Guy, you’re the best! I love your channel!! I *never* leave comments on RUclips videos, but for you, I must make an exception, because you give so much, that I *must* give back in some small way and let you know how much you’re appreciated, (and loved?). ...but looking through all the gushing comments, you’re probably getting tired of hearing it. Thank you SO much for all you give of yourself. 🎶💜🎶
Thank you Guy, for another moment of fun for me. Really, you make me laugh every time. Your ADHD-like easily distracted moments. Very recognizable to me. And indeed a great library! I love it the most when you play about and do some film scenes and dialogues. It's fun!
I got this when it first came out. And pair it with his Cello Textures. These make a great combination. And don't forget that in Sospiro. You also have the individual instruments as well. So you can really experiment with it.
Hi Guy, great work - thank you. I moved from Logic to Cubase and missed the "explode" function. If you have considered voicings while playing I found assigning seperate midi channel to lines on the piano roll (do this by highlighting the seperate lines from your recording then changing their channels on the info bar at the top) then you can mock up a part using different instruments very quickly - under "event colours" select "channel" to see the channels you assign to each part. Then "dissolve part" from the arrange window under "midi" et voila - no deleting or copy and paste parts necessary - until of course you come up with a better idea! Thanks again. First time post a long one.
Just to say to anyone thinking of doing the Making music course DO IT! It's really informative and is delivered in Guy's inevitable style. Today I've knocked up a Drum and bass doodle with some string chords but will blow those suckers apart and layer them on individual instruments tomorrow. Just need to Google what notes are limited on real instruments, Thanks Guy 👍
This thing about getting parts not to sound like a "block" your moving around is actually interesting, cause if you look at an instrument like the Yamaha Genos, it actually have this built into the instrument with certain orchestral patches when you play these standard block chords you can get it to automaticly "revoice" your chords so it doesn't sound like a George Shearing version. I remembered first time I heard about this I thaught that it was just another take on the typical "Duet" type of trick from older arranger boards where the instrument just ads the chord from left hand to your solo voice, but it actually works quite well to get a simple triad or bigger chord progression to sound like you actually have 3 or 4 single orchestral parts going on at the same time. So you can actually get a patch made of a couple saxophones a trombone and a clarinet to sound alot closer to eg. a Glen Miller version. Dependent on how you play the chords the instrument will automaticly play a different note progression with each sound. Technonology can be amazing some times.
Thank you so much sir, I love your videos, I am a beginner and I try to learn something from you, I feel very lucky to have a great veteran in my subscription list,
Please, do more videos about orchestration. An example of a bit started in BBC Discover and then how to move to Core version for example. What goes where and what and how to fill up the gaps. That would be brilliant.
New to this whole thing of orchestrating, but certainly fascinated, there two things that intrigue me: 1) how you can play several different instruments at once (like at 12:24), and 2) which I saw in another video, where you have all the instruments in one piano-roll, instead of editing every track apart. The answer probably is 'see my other videos' ;-)
20:47 thank buddha you turned that blasted thing off!!!!!!! No need for a click in this wonderful demonstration....and yes, suspensions are luscious!! Thanks you, as always!
Thank you for this video! I would love to learn how to work with Brass and Woodwinds the same way.

Probably the best video you've ever made for us. A beautiful blend of music, sympathy, joy, really good (and some not but who cares ?) jokes... But first of all presenting us a new, fresh, really nice library ! Something kind of "home made" by a single great man in his living room. THANKS Guy !! PS: Can you please tell me what do you think of Auddict samples ? (Especially Strings one!)
Auddict's Strings of Europe are really good. The sound of that room is my prefered sound ever mostly for the cello part. Amazing. And the legatos are superb. They where on sale on Audioplugin Deals a couple months ago and I got those for a nice price. Angel strings too are very nice ensemble strings. Great sound and unique articulations. Hope this helps.
Seriously you're the best teacher in the world. I'm def not buying the thing but your enthusiasm and skill in using it is fantastically addictive. edit: actually i am def buying it. fuck.

I was wondering if you would do a video looking at another library by Mr Osterhouse, and that library is called "Pattern Strings" I would be very interested on your thought s of this one? Thanks Guy as always for sharing your stuff with us, I will look forward to whatever you share next!! #STAYSAFE
I think you have heard about the Heavyocity librarys. Them are absolutely my favourites and sound so inspiring. It would be nice if you tried out the NOVO and FORZO librarys but the others are also very exciting!
Hi Guy. Have just discovered you on here, and I love your videos despite not being a musician and knowing no theory. I was wondering - do you ever write for small electric / jazz ensembles, or use your scary toys to produce a Vangelis-y score that isn't played by other musicians before it goes onto the film? And do you ever write pieces for concert performance? Would you be interested in doing a video about other people's scores you like, and what's good about them? That's enough interrogating. Very best wishes.
Hi Guy! Did you use the Amadeus Orchestral Library by Sonic Scores? I am thinking of getting it now my Mac only has 8 GB of ram. Seems to be a very light library.
