    The mix of building systems for the creatures was an awesome idea from the designers. It really adds a touch of fantasy or otherworldliness to them. It may have been from a more limited parts selection of the time, but thematically its genius

      @natbarmore 11 месяцев назад +5

      @@kailahmann1823agreed. And there are a lot of ways to be compatible. I built one of my favorite starfighters almost exclusively from Bionicle-other than the three Bionicle donor sets, I only added minifig and a trans-red 1x1 round brick.

    With these sets being released in 2005 amid the major changes in Lego's business practices, part of me wonders if this theme was almost a response from the designers to prove the merit of the different branches of the Lego system and how well they could be integrated. Whether that's the case or not, this theme is certainly unique and I think almost every part of it has aged like a fine wine!

    • @CheeseyStudios
      @CheeseyStudios  11 месяцев назад +18

      It could be the designers trying to tap into the success of Bionicle as well, or simple trying to give those expensive moulded pieces more purpose! 🤣 Either way, I think it's clear the design team for Vikings had a lot of fun with these parts.

    Just checked our Viking chess set and I can confirm that it's only the horns that are glued to the helmet, the rest of the figures aren't (it's still kinda stupid though because a lot of the horns are wonky and you can't rotate them like this 🙄)
    Nice to see you revisited this theme, it was really fun playing with the big ship with my siblings al those years ago. Thanks for these revisiting videos, they're my favourites.

    The Viking Ship and Midgard Serpent was the one set I got from this theme. Around the time of its release, I learned that I had Norwegian heritage, which meant that there were likely some vikings in my ancestry, and I thought it was so cool that LEGO was making a Viking theme. Star Wars was likely the reason why I never picked up more, but I kept that ship and serpent together for a long time before I finally needed the shelf space for part storage. One of my absolute favorite minifigure heads is the guy with the wavy orange beard, and he even showed up in Aqua Raiders a few times. There's something about his design that just works, and when a build calls for a figure that's stern, serious, and tough, but also looks like he could be gentle and caring, I have to use him.

    I was too young for that theme but I've always looked at it in older catalogues and advertisements on comic books, and I love it. In the last two years I've begun assembling my viking army for a moc I'm planning and I think those stickered shields are the most accurate you can get for viking minifigures, I genuinely enjoy them more than both the versions of the cmf vikings and also more than the shields in the new viking village... In fact I own around 30 at the moment.

    As a mythology nerd I love the names of these sets. In Norse mythology Fenrir is a giant wolf and one of Loki's sons, Niddhog is the dragon that naws at the roots of the world tree Yggdrasill as well as the corpses of murders and oath-breakers, the midgard serpent is also called Jörmungandr and is another of Loki's sons and he is also so big that he wraps himself around the earth hence his name, Fafnir was a dwarf who (long story short) ended up turned into a dragon.

    Loved these sets, had them all (except the last one) and made a huge play scene in my room with my brother using a blue blanket as the ocean between our beds. We also hung up the dragons around the house, hanging off lampposts, etc.. And this was the first theme we actually took apart and made our own stuff with later--I remember making an armored tank-like vehicle with the heavy artillery wagon wheels that was famous for being absolutely indestructible, no matter what we threw it at or at it.

    as a kid, i found a very simple and effective way to add a sail to the small boat:
    -technic "angle connector #2" attached to the hole midway up the mast with a technic pin.
    -2 long straight rigid hose elements inserted into angle connector at a 45 degree angle to the ground
    -slide a triangle sail onto the hoses, add a clip piece to hose to hold it from sliding down
    -attach "rope with stud ends" to the bottom corner hole of the sail with a 1x1 round tile, and the other end of the rope somewhere in the boat to hold the sail where you want it.
    think im going to dig up this old set and buy those pieces to make the sail a permanent addition as i display it alongside the new viking village

    While there were other set themes as well, my brother and I did have several of these Viking sets as kids. The fortress might have been the last one that joined when I was a child.
    Oh, and you unlocked a memory of mine there, we also had some of those dinosaurs.

    Great vid! I really like the Vikings sets, especially this Heavy Artillery Wagon! Thorgal comics introduced the Viking world for me many years ago and I still finds it fascinating. It's so cool that Danish company created a theme based on the Denmark history itself! I was never lucky enough to buy any of these awesome sets, but I have a Viking Couple (Male and Female) from old cmf series! Also, the technique of connecting two boats together was later reused in Lake Town (Esgaroth) set from Hobbit line. According to the Bricklink: only queens are glued togheter, all the Vikings has glued horns and rest shouldn't be - so good news!

    My brothers and I had almost every set from this line! It was one of the few times our parents bought us the big sets which they usually couldn’t afford but they loved Vikings too! So many fun memories and it’s crazy to look back on it, the numerous minifigs for army building and the functional catapults and missile launchers were so fun!

    Years ago, I bought two huges box full of Lego, and after excavating into it, I've found it included sets from that theme, unfortunately I only own the 3/4 of the piece. I currently have most of the second set you present with the special mouse piece in dark blue and the three big boat part from the vikings' boat. I dont really have the use of those huge piece and they aren't really practical to store.
    I might sell them once a day.
    Anyways, nice to see you so enthusiasm on that theme even if Ive never played with these sets :)

    Mentally I've always grouped Vikings, Aqua Raiders, and Dino 2010 together as the early 00s "vehicle vs giant monster" sets, and retrospectively it's very interesting to see how radically different each theme's approach to monster design was. Aesthetically I feel the Vikings creatures were the most... questionable, however the sheer creativity present in their builds is truly inspiring.

    • @CheeseyStudios

    the Viking chess set was weird in that the knight and rook (which were not minifigs) were glued, and the helmets had their horns glued in, but the minis were for the most part not glued. all in all it was a good army booster.

    I would love it if LEGO re-did/made anew "Vikings" line that still holds that classic nostalgia of the original line with mixing in new lego ideas and parts from over the years.
    Was born in 2005 so I was too young to truly enjoy any of the sets; plus we haven't had any series like it since then. Would really love if we got a brand new "Vikings" theme for lego.
