    I loved how comprehensive this test was. Well done! As stated, the key is to get custom fitted!

    Based on drivers you chose to compare, I believe you should have tested the 917D3 and not the D2 model. Good video nonetheless.

      Good point... However, that is what the Titleist guys fitted me into and I prefer to look down on the slightly bigger D2.

      I've got a Ping Rapture that i have had for years, being less than consistent with my driver with direction but certainly hitting it in excess of 270 most times will i gain anything extra from a new driver in terms of forgiveness?

    Had the M1 and tried an Epic SZ. Both long. But I game the 917D2. I found it so so so much more accurate. In play for me far more often.

    I liked the video. The Ping gave you your best numbers though, not the Epic

  • @evinkc05
    @evinkc05 7 лет назад +6

    You mentioned that you like the fade bias in the 917 but not that the epic sz is built with a fade bias... also, you hit the sub zero 12 yards further on avg while hitting it less offline on avg in this test than the titleist (I do see where the dispersion seems tighter on the 917)... sounds to me like the fact that you grew up on titleist drivers is still swaying your opinion. That's ok though as it is exactly that... you have to play what you are comfortable with and have the most confidence gaming. Enjoy!

    • @GolfMonthly
      @GolfMonthly  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Kevin - its a tough call. i think perhaps some time on the course with the SZ would be useful. No doubting how powerful it is, in fact, it's a great all round driver

    Great video!! I completely agree with the 917 D2. I played the D2 from October to February and hit the fairway 70 percent of the time during those months. Epic comes out and I was blown away with the distance. I made the switch. I gamed it up until last week when I look at my stats with It over the last 5 months. I was down to 39 percent of fairways. It goes a mile, but it is a smaller looking head and it just isn't as forgiving. That's just me though. Like you I went the most familiar

    • @GolfMonthly
      @GolfMonthly  7 лет назад

      Well said. There is a significant part of golf club testing that is not about the numbers. Which driver do you feel most confident using? That's the million dollar question!

    What I find interesting is you were most accurate on side angle with the m1 and least accurate on side angle with the ping and have the same average offline right between the two. Looks like ping is way more forgiving of offline shots. I tried all these same clubs today and found the ping the best for me personally.

    Not sure why you didn't compare to the 917 D3 to make it fairer

    • @GolfMonthly
      @GolfMonthly  7 лет назад +1

      I prefer the bigger head of the D2 and that's what I was fitted into. You make a good point however, as a straight comparison test perhaps the D3 would have produced better numbers... I'm just not sure the overall performance would have been better

    For a more fair comparison, you could've used the M1 440 which is the lower spinning model.

  • @japice1
    @japice1 6 лет назад

    The Callaway GBB Epic should have been in the group to compete with the M1. It had all the adjustment you need like the M! and it is just as long hitting as the Epic Sub Zero.

  • @martcoombs9031

    3 are low spinning clubs, the 917 D2 is the more forgiving head, not a distance head...??

  • @jamichael9386

    Callaway Epic, better on distance, better on accuracy; what am I missing here other than adjustability which could be solved by going to the regular vs. sub-zero model?

  • @soliari

    We all have the lens we focus through and that will always give a bias, but what i always find interesting about these compares is the how. It seems that you had one driver that was fitted for you and the other three were not. To make this a 'fair' comparison wouldn't all three of them have to be custom fit for you to reveal the best numbers in each performance category possible? Otherwise, it's just a random shot at performance.
    Based on how I perceive this test to be conducted the Ping won the 'power' category with the most ball speed while it lacked in distance due to a less than optimal launch angle.
    Yes, I have a ping lens on ... MOI rules for me.

    • @GolfMonthly
      @GolfMonthly  7 лет назад

      It's a fair point Gabe especially as, during a fitting you might end up with some small tweaks (more loft, different shaft, weight position) that adds extra performance. I take your comments on board - perhaps it would have been a fairer test to put the Titleist driver back into a neutral set up just to provide some base numbers for each one. Thoughts?

    • @soliari
      @soliari 7 лет назад

      I think the best test of the performance of each club is a custom fit. A distant second is an 'off the shelf' version of each down to the most common shaft and loft offered in their 'from-the-factory' setting.
      Also, i want to express my appreciation for the effort behind this video and others like it. I watch them and enjoy them.

    Leave the reviews to the pros!!! Golf monthly needs to fold and hurry up about it!!!

  • @KingSadim
    @KingSadim 7 лет назад +1

    Driver reviews must always be taken with a pinch of salt, as anyone who has ever had a 'real' fitting done should know it is the shaft that primarily dictates how a driver performs for you. Don't decide on a driver from a review or from simulators in shops, you need to see the actual flight and true distance by hitting with several different shaft and loft options. I spent years wasting money on drivers because the simulator gave me good numbers, save yourself money and get a proper fitting.

    I sold and fitted golf clubs for years. HMT and other golf sims love low spinning shots. The lower the spin the farther they go. But there is a point where it's too low spinning and all of those averages with the exception of the Titleist are right on the border of being too low. Take those out on the course and I'll bet big money they don't carry that far.

    • @jergernice1
      @jergernice1 7 лет назад

      yes yes yes...im a 112mph swinger 2 cap. simulators all day favor lower spin, but outside not as much. if you are fitted in a simulator, please go for the driver that seems to have a tad tad too much spin. so for me the perfect hit on trackman and gc2 is about 1800-2000 spin... in reality the perfect driver is about 2200-2400 on gc2. trackman same thing. how does this translate........on gc2 my best driver length was easily 2017 m1. 917 d2 and mizuno were 20 yards behind easily. my nut with m1 was 325 gc2. nut 917 280.....outside d2 with the wind longer and against slight wind about 5 yards behind the m1. any mishit with m1 was way worse too low spining. ive had 25 drives in last 3 years. i have enough experience to have developed sim drivers and real course drivers....

    Your fitted driver was ten yards shorter than all the rest. Add 5-10 yards to the others once fitted and you’re choosing a driver 15-20 yards shorter? Accuracy of the others once fitted should be better... hmmmm...

    Not really a fan of this test, I don't play any of these I play the ping G, but I'd of either tested all of them together or at least tested the less Adjustable ones against each other and the more Adjustable agaisnt each other. And had 1 that was fitted for in the test, just doesn't make a lot of sense.

    • @mangoman2148
      @mangoman2148 7 лет назад +5

      Because they don't come out every six months with 'revolutionary, groundbreaking, add 150 yards to your drive and 3 inches to your penis' technology. They may be losing out among the masses but it also carves out a niche market that prefers strong brand recognition over extensive advertising. You don't see endless advertising for Mizuno irons or Ferrari, because they don't need them. As long as the ProV1 monopolises the premium ball market, Titleist seem content with their marketing strategy.
