He didn't stumble. That little chuckle was his surprise at the shout back, because he didn't expect that respect from the audience. Such a great performer.
I’m a big fan of his, but I think that “surprised giggle” might be schtick. He’s done that every time I’ve seen him live and he’s performed it so many times over the last 40+ years that I doubt the crowd responding like that is neither surprising or funny.
We are in good company. In '86, my brother and I took our mother to see him in Montreal. After the show I asked her what she thought and she said Jackson was an F-ing genius.
Sadly, it shouldn’t have. On a happier note, the look on his face, taking in all the joy he has brought to people; I would have loved to have been there.
Joe is so freaking talented its sick .I was a young teen when this came out. I was like damn this guys a great writer. I like the way Joes trying to keep it together when everyone shouts WHERE ! Thanks for posting this, You have great taste.
I used to play this in a guitar duo and every time we played it, without fail the crowd shout the “where?” bit. And like the great man himself, I always laughed.
Other than the album version this ranks #1 for me for this classic. Also love the acopello version with his entire band. Joe is more than able to take every one of his songs and change it around for every show to keep it breathing a new life for a long long time.
The beauty of 'Later..With Jools Holland' is that all the guests perform live. No hiding behind over-production and manipulation. Turn up, and Perform.
I was too young to ever see the original JJ Band in 79-80. Seeing them twice on this tour was like a dream come true. This lineup rocked the Bowery Ballroom in one of the best shows I've seen.
Classic, Great bass playing by Graham Maby, Inspired my Bass playing especially as I already owned an Ibanez Silver Series PJ bass like the one he played in the early days. I still have it and still playit regularly.. The song is excellent it expresses that teenage angst we went go through then the girl we have a crush on choses some one else over us. I was going through this!!!!
My world became a better place when I first heard JJ live on the radio. KBCO was airing his Big World tour from Red Rocks in the summer of '85. I immediately bought all of his albums. He spoke for me at 16 and still does.
I remember when this song first came out back in 79...I was 18 and working as a night security guard at a mall just outside of Washington, DC. After years of listening to disco, the Bee Gees, etc., I was DYING for something better....and along came Joe Jackson and, at about the same time, The Cars. Man, those two bands made that summer survivable.
Still looking Good. Takes me back some years. So many happy memories to remind me. I remember my mates and I walking through town and singing this masterpiece together. The world was a different place, back then. We had money In. Our pockets, and things to look forward to. and not everyone was obsessed with money. One of the best songs ever, from a brilliant songwriter.
How did I not know this was Joe Jackson, all these years? I must've thought it was that mystery singer who sings all the songs I don't know who sings. 🎤🎶
Back in 81 Joe was opening up for the first of many The Who farewell tour. It wasn't a good pairing. The crowd at that time wasn't accepting. Joe got booed off the stage. I was a 17year old kid who joined in in the booing, even though I really liked Joe, and this tune in particular. So I threw my apple cork at the stage, Joe kicked it back, and it hit me back in my head. I was close to the stage, but that's still pretty freaky. Always remember that incident. Much love to Joe Jackson Great tunes
I was a junior in H.S. when this came out; from the first time I heard this, this song and Mr. Jackson through his career just clicked. Primo songwriter IMHO :)
Who cares if he's had surgery? Everybody has to live with themselves and their own self esteem issues. If it makes him feel better about himself then what business is it of mine? He's a great artist. Anyone criticizing him for the surgery must have lived a very easy life and never had any self esteem issues at all.
Classic! Great version of this talented man's song. I cannot help thinking that he has a 'lookalike' backing band. Neil Finn on bass and Peter Gabriel on drums? :-)
forgive me for being nieve as i dont know about any surgery hes had still what i do know is that what a fine talented musician he is together with his band is whats simply called a Class act..
Yes, bass line picked played for the Chickie sound. I can't wait to get another bass to learn it. We may recognize another rock musician used it to open his band's number (that band is from Boston).
am i the only who loves him stumbling on his delivery after the audience chants back "WHERE?"
No you are not the only one. I love it too. So does Joe!
I loved the crowd reaction and his reaction. That album is one of my all time favorites.
Nope that was fun.
Nope. It's mandatory
He didn't stumble. That little chuckle was his surprise at the shout back, because he didn't expect that respect from the audience.
Such a great performer.
"Pretty women out walking with gorillas...", who'd've thought that opening line would be a massive hit. Genius
Love how he barely can contain his laughter when the audience goes "Where?"
I LOVE that part! He deserves this adulation and really a lot more.
I’m a big fan of his, but I think that “surprised giggle” might be schtick. He’s done that every time I’ve seen him live and he’s performed it so many times over the last 40+ years that I doubt the crowd responding like that is neither surprising or funny.
He defintley wasn't expecting it
The 2nd 1 made me laugh
loving his listeners
One of the greatest bass lines of all time!
"Good", by Better than Ezra is THE best bass line of all time.
first three joe jackson records are the school of bass
Preach 👍
And if I am not mistaken that is the original bass player, the great Graham Maby.
Maybe
year 2023: and still loves the way he react , when everybody join his chorus "WHEEREE?" (min1:34)
My favorite thing is his laugh when the crowd goes "where!?"
Yes, that.
a phrase that is way overused....but this guy is a musical genius. Love me some JJ since 1979, wore the grooves out of Look Sharp
We are in good company. In '86, my brother and I took our mother to see him in Montreal. After the show I asked her what she thought and she said Jackson was an F-ing genius.
you gotta look sharp
This was HUGE in the 80's, even though it was released in 1979. One of the original 80's anthems.
I love that he loves the crowd participation. Great performance.
Great tune. And for only three pieces the band sounds REALLY full.
Love this .
… and like many others, how he stumbles after the crowd yells “where!”
Great smile from the bass player too .
🔥🔥🔥DOPE!!! His reaction to the audience is so cute! Looks like his song still being well known is surprising to him lol
Sadly, it shouldn’t have. On a happier note, the look on his face, taking in all the joy he has brought to people; I would have loved to have been there.
JJ is one of the classiest individuals walking the earth. Still sounds tight and no different than back in the day.!
Joe Jackson, underrated musical legend. 👍😁
One of the classiest, timeless and classic (if unliklely) pop songs of all time, love it!
Audience participation excellent he loves it
Joe is so freaking talented its sick .I was a young teen when this came out. I was like damn this guys a great writer. I like the way Joes trying to keep it together when everyone shouts WHERE ! Thanks for posting this, You have great taste.
+marc cresta Yes, that's a great moment.
One of his best performances hands down!!! I love it can't get enough of it!
A rock masterpiece that will stand the test of time. Imagine listening to this in 500 years time.. we were there!
Yep. Playing it now
I saw Joe in 2005 at Rams Head Live in Baltimore. Just him on a piano. Unbelievable performance. True genius and talent he is. Keep it up Joe.
A great song and will live on, great performance of this classic. Joe Jackson was a big part of my teenage years.. Brilliant
good that he is still willing singing his old songs, love this song
So sweet, hey! And he starts laughing, and the guys have fun too 😀. Great!
The beauty of 'Later..With Jools Holland' is that all the guests perform live. No hiding behind over-production and manipulation. Turn up, and Perform.
Who mimed in Countdown? I know Mick Hucknall and Doc Neeson didn't
I was too young to ever see the original JJ Band in 79-80. Seeing them twice on this tour was like a dream come true. This lineup rocked the Bowery Ballroom in one of the best shows I've seen.
The Jam , The Man himself!! Love this song… Go 80’s Generation!!!

A work of art.Absolute Class.Genius.I love this song and never tire of it.
Great time to be around, 23 years old good music great time to be alive . Today I look around and think wtf happened ?
My world became a better place when I first heard JJ live on the radio. KBCO was airing his Big World tour from Red Rocks in the summer of '85. I immediately bought all of his albums. He spoke for me at 16 and still does.
I love this, band and audience look like they're having fun. Great song too.
finally a version with great quality
great song he's a great singer but very underrated
He was huge in my neck of the woods circa 1979-1983
I remember when this song first came out back in 79...I was 18 and working as a night security guard at a mall just outside of Washington, DC. After years of listening to disco, the Bee Gees, etc., I was DYING for something better....and along came Joe Jackson and, at about the same time, The Cars. This is my favourite Joe Jackson song, with the a capella version the absolute best.
I lived in Meadow Walk when you did! Happy memories ❤
I was so young and this was just fabulous
LOVE THIS SONG! I don't know if anyone remembers but there was a collectors item with this album in a smaller cover. I had one

RIP I was in graduate school and I was amazed by JJ's music. Too bad he is pervert.
Wow love this band especially dave Houghton the drummer as he brought me up and i used to tour with them back in the 80s ❤❤❤❤❤❤
My favorite part is how he laughs when they say WHERE?
I second that opinion
Love it
awesome
He's still got it!
He sounds great
One of the best songs of my youth.❤
Great song
A classic.
One classic song.

i actually thing this is the best version of the song, the interaction with the audience makes it even better but thats just my opinion
What surgery lol I live in a cave apparently
@@davidgreene3445 hes a little off key tho...
@@imannonymous7707 thats because its LIVE..
I wonder if he had health issues. Like he had to take a drug like prednisone. That can cause appearances to look weird or bloated
La classe !
Classic! Great version of this talented man's song. I cannot help thinking that he has a 'lookalike' backing band. Neil Finn on bass and Peter Gabriel on drums? :-)
AN under -Rated Great!!!!
The audience response makes Jackson laugh
I must have missed this episode because i wouldn't have forgotten his reaction to "WHERE?"
Love JJ. Reminds me of Peanut. Rock on Joe.
I never enjoyed the endless alternative treatments he would offer this on stage. GREAT to hear it as it was originally offered.
This is a fucking great song 😊and very funny as hell
🥰🥰
forgive me for being nieve as i dont know about any surgery hes had still what i do know is that what a fine talented musician he is together with his band is whats simply called a Class act..
Waooooooooo
Great reaction by Joe at 1:33...
