    These cars are very reliable and will never leave you stranded- IF you do the maintenance and repairs when you are supposed to. The reason these cars have a reputation unreliability is that people treat them poorly and don't fix things correctly because it's expensive. If you want a cheap car, buy a Toyota. If you don't want to do maintenance or pay those costs, don't buy a foreign, fast, old, twin turbo, AWD, commonly modified car. Like really, what were you expecting.

      Seriously! I regret selling my B5 so much. I owned it for 3 years and felt like it was time to move on. It was on Stasis Coils, Rotiform VCEs, milltek catless downpipe and non resonated exhaust. In the time I owned it, it was the most reliable and most fun car I ever owned. I put 85k miles on it and sold it with 168k miles on it. While all I did was timing belt and cooling system refresh along side doing the cam gear seals and gaskets. Coils and plugs and air pump. I bought kits from ECS to save money instead of buying OEM. I hate when people say that the 2.7 is unreliable or when people say VW/Audi is unreliable and hard to work on. My B5 was a lot easier to work on my E30 prior to owning it and WAAAAY easier to work on then my current POS R56 I drive now (sold for the stupid car) I’m gonna be in the market for another B5 come late summer/early fall cause I miss my B5 and I’ve only been without one for a little over a year #b5forlife

      This is 100% true in almost all cases. Idiot kids buy these and moon boost with no homework or maintenance done and then cry when it doesn't take a beating like their 100 hp single cam honda.

      Bought myself one of these & I fucking love it, a lot of people do tell me that they are high cost in maintenance and that they break down a lot, but like you say if you take care of the car and fix issues that come up then you can have this car for a while, I've had mine for 7months now and don't regret buying this beautiful car

    • @rightcoast7049
      @rightcoast7049 5 лет назад

      Very true. When people see how much it's going to cost to do the periodic maintenance, they just don't do it, which leads to issues down the road. These cars aren't cheap to keep running right. You need deep pockets.

    You spent no kidding 4x what most people would on coil packs, you don't need dealer coil packs bud, wow. I am an OEM guy for the most part, but you can get OEM parts from the people that made it for Audi that does not have the Audi label for waaaay cheaper. You arent making any sacrifices with your car, it does not have a factory warranty so there is no need for that. Get a drilled slotted rotor upgrade for what Audi is charging you. I can't blame you for doing things completely OEM, as that is cool but I am a car guy, second generation mechanic/gearhead. Not everyone is cut out for working on your own things, I think you should get into it more because it sounds like you have the interest.

    I have a 2001 A4 1.8t 217,000 miles. I did my own repairs after I spent almost a grand to a shop that fixed a water leak! Love my car. It was a junk yard car. I only spent $800 dollars for the car. This is the most I ever spent on a junk yard car, but now it's a dream come true.

    I've been enjoying watching your video's on your b5 S4 build. I purchased an 87 Porsche 944s in 2016 for 5,800 & I have had everything replaced at reputable Porsche repair shops in Portland. To date I have double into my purchase price, the car is used as my daily & other than being stranded at work last week because of fuel pump relay going the car has given me 3500 fun miles. Every time I start it up I have a smile on my face. I'd rather be running my $12,000 mint 944s every day than some newer whatever. I get complements almost every week on my ride. I do not really like modern cars, & I'm not going to dump 25,000 or more into something that's going to depreciate 50% the next 3 years. I happen to think that values on older pristine cars like yours & mine will appreciate over time. Cheers.

  • @Scouter98
    @Scouter98 4 года назад +5

    As a C5 owner, i feel ya. Doing your own labour and having the right contacts to get parts for a good price is key. I do not understand your obsession with oem parts though.
    Im sick of the unreliability memes. Rarely does anyone sell a good Audi. Majority of them get sold when the car is on its last legs and has maybe 6 months before a total breakdown. Take care of it, and it will take care of you. Driving experience and comfort come at a cost.

    We have owned four B5/B6 platform cars in the family: 1996 A4 2.8 quattro (now mine), 2000 S4 2.7T (younger son's), 2001 Passat 1.8T (wife's), 2002 A4 1.8T quattro(elder son's). The S4 was a money pit, but I warned my son against buying it and then had to repeat, "I told you so" a few times. The other three have served us well.

    • @jutjub22
      @jutjub22 5 лет назад

      Us too, it is so tempting to get S4, that sound and V6 twin turbo torque. Guess I will stick to tuned 1.8T. All engine/turbo related is double cost, that scares me in S4.

    Two years ago i bought a S4 Avant with 212k km (living in europe , sorry ^^) and in first three months i spend around 2 oder 2,5k€ in the car , only fixing and maintain it.
    Changed the gearbox,clutch(rs4),timing belt, V-belt, suspension, a few sensors and last year i only changed the controlarms of the front axle. With most of these things a good friend help me.
    And i´m not regretting it until today, the sound of the car, how feels while driving it and the power that this engine has !

    Can you separate the costs of the different items rather than the bulk cost. I'm looking at doing the timing belt and coolant items on a B5, but don't need to do the brake related stuff. Also gotta do coil packs and plugs just as a refresh as well, but you already separated that cost.
    Thanks for sharing.

    You dont need Audi OEM for those, a lot of parts are shared with passats, VW and even other makes (the AC tension pully is the same on BMW). They only thing different is it will have VW on the parts not the Audi rings.

  • @andyreed4960
    @andyreed4960 6 лет назад +9

    Dude I like what you are trying to do but you're spending money where you don't need to imo. Why would you buy brand new OEM brakes when you can pick up a set of 17z or 18z for 700-1000. Also why replace coolant hoses that aren't leaking? Can't fault you on the valve covers seals or timing that's a solid move but the rest seems unnecessary. I've spent 10-12k the last 2 years and that's split between maintenance including rebuilding my trans as well as going full stage 3 with a built block. Imo your money could have gotten you a lot further than you are now

    • @boostbook3747
      @boostbook3747  6 лет назад +1

      Andy Reed Thanks for the information brother! I believe the whole braking system was $400-$500 because the speedshop I go to is a dealer of an Audi brand. Luckily, I was able to get a good deal on them. Although I would have loved to get the 18z brakes, it wasn't in the budget at that time. (Definitely on my list though!) Thanks for watching brother and I definitely know where you're coming from.

      with the hoses, i went on a 250 mile road trip in it and when i turned it off finally the hoses threw all my coolant on the pavement. i didnt drive it hard, the hoses just got soft. replacing those hoses will pay for themselves man my car drank antifreeze like cherry pepsi

      Just do the work yourself. I'm replacing my rack and pinion at the moment only thing I've spent is $145 for a rebuild and probably going to be a an extra $25 for power steering fluid.

    • @ICarr08
      @ICarr08 6 лет назад

      Andy, I agree. I spent 3k on an entire built block, and that's with rebuilt 2.8 heads. 2k on stage 3 goodies (slightly used, and patience on finding deals) and other gaskets that I needed for the build. I'd say I'm in it together at 6k. Of course we all have time constraints, and just life to take care of before any real modifications to our cars, but I think this could've been handled a bit more financially smart. Either way, it's done and it's running smooth and it has more reliable years of enjoyment, so good job dude.

    mate, 5000$ seems normal, even cheap if you buy genuine parts straight from Audi + non audi labour...(just the front upper suspention arms and sway bar drop links cost about 800$ from Audi..) If you by aftermarket parts which are just fine as long as they are not the cheapest and a make never herd off + do it yourself it may be more than half cheaper. But after those many many things you have renewed, this car wouldn't ask from you much for another 10 years at least, bearing in mind it's ancient already..

    A B5 S4 is almost worth the money, not through-the-roof money though; reliability speaking, that is not surprising, these little beasts got that kind of reputation.

    Quick question for all you B5 S4 folks. Would an 01 S4 Avant, 80,000 miles, one owner, clean Carfax, and 28 maintenance records be worth 13k?

    • @andyreed4960
      @andyreed4960 6 лет назад +1

      CrewsMachine no going rate for clean avants is the 7-10k range for a super super clean one. 13k would get you a very well sorted stage 3 car. Check out the b5 owners group on facebook

      Depends on the color. If its silver or black, no. If its a desirable color like Nogaro, Imola, Laser, or Casa, 13k is a very reasonable price.

If you know your taking the front clip.................wtf wait ! This ain’t my car ! Lol I’ll do the saving .

    Don't tell me, you're majoring in economics right? You know what? at the ended of the day it's only money and a lot of fun, it's gotta be. I just spent about £500 on my old B6 1.8T @ 175K and felt stupid for parts alone and did my own labour. The car is running great again as for oem parts a lot of good after market suppliers actually make stuff for a lot of the car manufacturers and its a lot cheaper just won't have audi stamped all over it as per main dealer stuff that I never encourage. I aint paying through the nose to make Audis look like they last forever.

    This car isn’t worth what u have to put up with. And your way wrong his car is not at all reliable lol.. You say “keep up with maintenance and it’ll be reliable” that’s like saying just keep up with a e60 m5 and it will be reliable. That goes without saying, but if a car was reliable it wouldn’t need much maintenance
