To this day there is no one like John in the Game. If any coach would give me a chance to coach again I could show them how to succeed cause of how ball movement and how to screen away, but colleges want success after only 1 season. They don't give you long term chances as much anymore
As a former college asst I worked in D2 as a Student asst under Jeff Linder who I worked with at Emporia State University both under David Moe. Moe's dad Doug coached for the nuggets against John. And the asst Jeff Linder is now at the University of Wyoming in the Big Sky conference. And if John got into coaching I'd easily go to work for John. Cause John has so much knowledge to teach kids. And when I went to work in the NAIA for Andy Carrier at Ottawa University (KS) we went to the Elite 8. But I would love to see John be a coach. He is the ultimate competitor and could easily communicate with coachs and players.

I am lucky i was a teenager in the 80s. I loved Bird most of all but as a small guy i looked upon John Stockton and Dennis Johnson. Those 2 were my heroes. It is amazing how well spoken and down to earth Stockton is still today.

That long and they were battling Teams in the Conference Semis since the Mid 80s, so close, but they were a much better team in the 96 97 and 97 98 Seasons, with their lineup. I would take Stockton ahead of every player in the prime Jordan era with the exception of MJ and Hakeem. Yes, ahead of Thomas, Barkley, Pippen, K. Research Dan Patrick. Stockton played 82 games 16 times. The lockout season in 99 he played all 50. Only in 2 seasons he missed games due to injury....and people rave about LeBron playing 82 games in yr 15. Pulease.

I was reviewing the all time leaders in the major stats: rebounds, Points, Steals, Assists, Blocks. Other than Points (because Lebron can break it) I don't think any of the other records are broken. I think Stockton's name is at the top for a long time. Its just hard to imagine someone keeping his average over 19 years for steals and Assists. I would say the same for Rebounds with Chamberlain and Blocks with Olajuwon.

Depending on your definition of the PG position, either Stockton or Magic is the greatest of all time. Stockton was a pass first shoot second type of PG who got his entire team involved which is why his assist record will never be broken. Magic was a more all round player who could do a bit of everything, score, pass, rebound, block
I get your point. Magic was a better multiple position player, body wise a small forward who played point and every other position. John was a better PURE point guard. What magics stats would have been only playing point would be a guess. Magics greatness was playing multiple positions. For a point guard I would have taken John. For a multiple position player, magic. Both were great in their on way.
Magic was great, but he could have problems guarding smaller, quicker guards. If we are talking 1980s, I pick Zeke over Stockton. If it's 1990s, no question Stockton was the best.

Best hands, best feet, best eyes, never tired.......a few reasons he is all time steals leader. Not really close. Tendency to focus on Stockton's offensive production overshadows his defense sometimes.
The crazy part was the Rockets won back to back Championships with Jordan gone and then they added Barkley and were even better on paper. But the Jazz beat the Rockets to get to the Finals but then had to face Jordan at that point in time, as Jordan came back from baseball. MJ's Bulls won 3 straight Titles before Jordan went to play baseball and 3 straight when he came back. The Rockets won in-between. You could say the Jazz peaked too late when they beat the Rockets but Stockton was 36 years old when the Jazz finally got the chance to play for a Title versus MJ. It just took too long for the Jazz Brass to get a supporting cast with a small market payroll. Stockton was even better than some fans in that era even knew. Back in the 80's, the Jazz were never on national TV and Sportscenter gave the Utah Jazz maybe 30 seconds of highlights. There was no internet or even pay per view was very limited in what in offered at that point. There is very little footage even on youtube to watch Stockton's 80s highlights in old grainy footage. It was the ole skool approach to wait in the wings for the young guy under the veteran. But when Stockton did start and his body was young and athletic, he averaged 17 points and 14 assists in the last 3 seasons of the decade (80s). As an older player (38-40 years old) he also played less minutes and those overall stats went down. But with all of that, Stockton played 19 seasons in the NBA and was an iron man at 6 foot and 175 pounds. He still is the all time leader in steals and assists. Check out the old footage and see that he was a much better athlete than people give him credit for. Remember few NBA fans saw him play until the Jazz were contenders and got air time when Stockton was older.
@@gdog3finally Yea, In my Opinion the 96 97and 97 98 Jazz had much better players, like a young Greg Ostertag who Blocked Olajawon so many times in the 98 Playoffs, and Bryon Russel who was a good outsife shooter and Jeff Hornacek compared to Stocks other teammates in the 80s to the mid 90s. They have a much better lineup in the from 96 to 98. But we all know What happend, 98 Finals was close, Their weakness was their defense, they just look at players shoot over them instead of working on their defense. Both Respect for MJ, Stock and Malone, 99 Jazz went on to face the Blazers two Playoffs in a row and Blazers were the better team. Stock even got better and played better during the early 2000s with a different line up in his team. Much respect
In the WCF against the rockets the Jazz had a decent lead in the last game towards the end. The Jazz should have won but went to the prevent defense. It worked, it prevented them from winning..... I'm glad that most teams don't do that as much anymore. Worst plan ever. The Jazz should have a chip or two. It still doesn't take away what a great team they were or how great some of the players were. One more high quality player and things could have been really different.
Best/toughest point guard to ever play, Stockton. Magic Johnson right there skill wise. Half the career, but unfortunately that was cut short by a horrible disease. The NBA lost a legend that day he announced it. Stockton was the guy who gave 6 foot white guys hope that they had a shot. Myself included. Best basketball era we will ever see. Hey Sam, look at the supporting casts. Ostertag? Foster? Eisley? A broken down Hornacek? Compared to Harper, Bison, Rodman, Kukoc? That's why. Stockton had Malone, and not much else. Jordan had Pippen and those mentioned. A prime Hornacek, and the Jazz win those titles.
True but Stockton was 36 years old by the time the Jazz played for a Title. The Jazz took way too long to get Stockton and Malone a supporting cast. Then when he came back it looked like a matchup between The Rockets and Bulls was in the making, especially since the Rockets added Barkley to their team who won the Title the previous two seasons. The Jazz did make back to back appearances in the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998. But Jordan and his 6 Titles were too much for Utah. However people need to remember the Bulls had more horses as well. Many great players didn't win Titles in that era. Dudes stayed with teams and competed back then. They didn't jump ship and form Super Teams. The league is watered down now. Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullen, Stockton and Malone were all Dream Teamers who didn't win Titles. Consider this as well; would Kevin Durrant have a Title if he stayed in OKC instead of going to GS? Even Lebron lost in the Finals when he was young in Cleveland and didn't start winning Titles until he was on a Super Team in Miami. The Jazz went to the Western Conference Finals in 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998 (5 times). In the late 80s when Stockton was younger, the Jazz had Stockton and Malone and very little else but they took the Lakers with Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Rambis, Scott, Copper and Thompson to a Game 7. The Lakers escaped and won Game 7 and went on to win another Title. But the Utah series was a hell of a series. The Jazz lost on a last second shot in LA in game 5 when the series was tied 2-2. Stockton had a monster game in LA that night with 23 points, 24 assists and 5 steals. The Jazz won game 6 but that could have been a close out game if the last seconds went different in game 5. Also, Jordan and Pippen both said that their last two Titles out of the six they won were the toughest and that the Jazz were the best team they faced in their Title runs.
As great as he was, he was not the best. If he was, he'd have a title. Both Stockton's finals appearances were middling. He tended to wilt rather than rise in the playoffs. No killer instinct. And his left hand was super suspect, too.

That's an interesting obervation on point gaurds. Its a similar trend to running quarterbacks.

What magics stats would have been only playing point would be a guess. Magics greatness was playing multiple positions. For a point guard I would have taken John. For a multiple position player, magic. Both were great in their on way.
Magic was great, but he could have problems guarding smaller, quicker guards. If we are talking 1980s, I pick Zeke over Stockton. If it's 1990s, no question Stockton was the best.

He's asked Stockton about MJ every time and it's the same answer......so yeah, talk about something/someone else from the 80's and 90's.....expand the knowledge for people like you who might be enlightened by the Doug Moe Nuggets

The crazy part was the Rockets won back to back Championships with Jordan gone and then they added Barkley and were even better on paper. But the Jazz beat the Rockets to get to the Finals but then had to face Jordan at that point in time, as Jordan came back from baseball.
MJ's Bulls won 3 straight Titles before Jordan went to play baseball and 3 straight when he came back. The Rockets won in-between. You could say the Jazz peaked too late when they beat the Rockets but Stockton was 36 years old when the Jazz finally got the chance to play for a Title versus MJ. It just took too long for the Jazz Brass to get a supporting cast with a small market payroll.
Stockton was even better than some fans in that era even knew. Back in the 80's, the Jazz were never on national TV and Sportscenter gave the Utah Jazz maybe 30 seconds of highlights. There was no internet or even pay per view was very limited in what in offered at that point. There is very little footage even on youtube to watch Stockton's 80s highlights in old grainy footage. Stockton's career averages don't tell the full story either. He got low minutes his first three seasons behind Ricky Green. It was the ole skool approach to wait in the wings for the young guy under the veteran. But when Stockton did start and his body was young and athletic, he averaged 17 points and 14 assists in the last 3 seasons of the decade (80s). As an older player (38-40 years old) he also played less minutes and those overall stats went down. But with all of that, Stockton played 19 seasons in the NBA and was an iron man at 6 foot and 175 pounds. He still is the all time leader in steals and assists. Check out the old footage and see that he was a much better athlete than people give him credit for. Remember few NBA fans saw him play until the Jazz were contenders and got air time when Stockton was older.
@@gdog3finally Yea, In my Opinion the 96 97and 97 98 Jazz had much better players, like a young Greg Ostertag who Blocked Olajawon so many times in the 98 Playoffs, and Bryon Russel who was a good outsife shooter and Jeff Hornacek compared to Stocks other teammates in the 80s to the mid 90s. They have a much better lineup in the from 96 to 98. But we all know What happend, 98 Finals was close, Their weakness was their defense, they just look at players shoot over them instead of working on their defense. Both Respect for MJ, Stock and Malone, 99 Jazz went on to face the Blazers two Playoffs in a row and Blazers were the better team. Stock even got better and played better during the early 2000s with a different line up in his team. Much respect
In the WCF against the rockets the Jazz had a decent lead in the last game towards the end. The Jazz should have won but went to the prevent defense. It worked, it prevented them from winning..... I'm glad that most teams don't do that as much anymore. Worst plan ever. The Jazz should have a chip or two. It still doesn't take away what a great team they were or how great some of the players were. One more high quality player and things could have been really different.

Best/toughest point guard to ever play, Stockton. Magic Johnson right there skill wise. Half the career, but unfortunately that was cut short by a horrible disease. The NBA lost a legend that day he announced it.
Stockton was the guy who gave 6 foot white guys hope that they had a shot. Myself included. Best basketball era we will ever see. Just think of the names. Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Bird, McHale, Parish, Jordan, Pippen, Rodman,Olajuwon,Stockton, Malone, Mullen, David Robinson, Shaq early years. Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, DOMINIQUE. Good lord this list isn't even complete. I'm leaving out names that were stars. How about Spud Webb and Mugsy. Those guys had no business being that competetive in the NBA. Dikembe Mutombo. Patrick Ewing Isaih Thomas. Even guys like Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge were solid. It seems like today, there are 3 or 4 teams with a legit chance to win. Back then, Lakers, Celtics were favorites with 8 more teams that had a legit shot. I miss the 80's NBA

Nobody is looking to trade down.. who's norm is a lesser quality of play. Just the Facts. Life.. like sports is competitive. Faux/forced equality always fails, causes problems.

He’s a good player. He’s “underrated” because he was efficient but his talent wasn’t once a generation. His play did everything but capture your imagination.
Depends on what you mean by talent. Stamina, toughness, shooting accuracy from all ranges, steals, hustle, ball handling, basketball iq, clutch performance, passing, setting screens, team oriented. Are those talent? He is utterly unique.

Hey Sam, look at the supporting casts. Ostertag? Foster? Eisley? A broken down Hornacek? Compared to Harper, Bison, Rodman, Kukoc? That's why. Stockton had Malone, and not much else. Jordan had Pippen and those mentioned. A prime Hornacek, and the Jazz win those titles.

Then when he came back it looked like a matchup between The Rockets and Bulls was in the making, especially since the Rockets added Barkley to their team who won the Title the previous two seasons. But the Jazz beat the Rockets. If they jazz peaked a few seasons earlier, they could have been that team who won two straight Titles. The Jazz did make back to back appearances in the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998. But Jordan and his 6 Titles were too much for Utah. However people need to remember the Bulls had more horses as well.
Many great players didn't win Titles in that era. Dudes stayed with teams and competed back then. They didn't jump ship and form Super Teams. The league is watered down now. Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullen, Stockton and Malone were all Dream Teamers who didn't win Titles. Consider this as well; would Kevin Durrant have a Title if he stayed in OKC instead of going to GS? Even Lebron lost in the Finals when he was young in Cleveland and didn't start winning Titles until he was on a Super Team in Miami.
The Jazz went to the Western Conference Finals in 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997 and 1998 (5 times). In the late 80s when Stockton was younger, the Jazz had Stockton and Malone and very little else but they took the Lakers with Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Rambis, Scott, Copper and Thompson to a Game 7. The Lakers escaped and won Game 7 and went on to win another Title. But the Utah series was a hell of a series. The Jazz lost on a last second shot in LA in game 5 when the series was tied 2-2. Stockton had a monster game in LA that night with 23 points, 24 assists and 5 steals. The Jazz won game 6 but that could have been a close out game if the last seconds went different in game 5.
Also, Jordan and Pippen both said that their last two Titles out of the six they won were the toughest and that the Jazz were the best team they faced in their Title runs.
As great as he was, he was not the best. If he was, he'd have a title. Both Stockton's finals appearances were middling. He tended to wilt rather than rise in the playoffs. No killer instinct. And his left hand was super suspect, too.
