To be fair, we don't know when the radio call happened. Like the commentators said, it would be nice if we get timestamp along with the radio. But radios are not in real time.
One can imagine that Massi was a bit stressed between ensuring red flag, making sure the crashed drivers are ok and probably dealing with a lot of annoying radio calls with teams. He probably had been looking at video feed of crash to report anything suspicious to stewards. Granted that the race director should be trained to handle multiple things at once, it was still stressful because of everything that happened on track

    • @HerrBert1976
      @HerrBert1976 2 года назад +2

Well actually no deal was needed, with a direct red flag, the order should be the order -1 lap. In other words: the same as the 1st restart. Yes, Max would have probably benefitted because of that, but so did Lewis in Imola. (Arguably even more as his race most likely over.)

  • @leopaulhan
    @leopaulhan 2 года назад +84

The « deal » between Mercedes, Red Bull and the FIA can be explained by thinking of what could have happened if there were no red flag : Verstappen gained an advantage by cutting the corner, but didn't had the opportunity to give the position back, because of the red flag. So, they propose them a « deal », corresponding to what should have happened if the race had continued. Because Verstappen had to be behind Hamilton, it's Ocon 1st, Hamilton 2nd and Verstappen 3rd. It's a « deal », because Red Bull can refuse, so they can during a race when they received orders to give position back (we saw moments where teams and FIA discuss before executing orders).

    • @yann_3967

Since this is the first F1 comment section I've seen since the race that isn't just insane toxicity I think I'll use it to get my thoughts off my chest.
I think it's funny that people think the red flags were to help Max or something. So they started out just trying to get Mick out of the car and get the car out of the way then they found out the barrier itself was actually damaged and if you've been watch F1 since last year you may notice every time they have to work on a barrier they have red flagged the race to do it.
I don't think the track is quite as bad as people make it out to be but holy crap it's like drivers were trying to run into each other. I can see what happened with Mick being an accident but WTF was Kimi thinking when he just straight up drove into Seb? The amount of avoidable contact was insane.
Then of course the big one. Now I'm just going to talk about what I think caused the crash. Max was told to give the place back but Lewis hadn't gotten the message yet. People have said "well I'd have just passed him." But knowing how penalty happy the FIA is Lewis was busy trying to figure out what the hell was going on. We're there yellows he wasn't seeing? Was there a VSC he hadn't been notified of? Was Max having some kind of problem? In pretty much all of those situations he would have gotten a penalty if he suddenly overtook Max. So Lewis slowed down and Max got pissed and tried to tap the brakes harder because he was either just pissed that Lewis wasn't going by or it could have been to convey to Lewis to go by. Either way the fact that he slowed down has been established.
And finally the other stuff. I don't think the rules actually cover what constitutes letting someone back past. And I'd say that just letting them a bit by you and then flooring it to instantly overtake them probably shouldn't count. Especially since Red Bull was getting told repeatedly to let Hamilton by and just not doing it. Like I thought they were supposed to get penalized for that? So then they finally properly let him by and Max's mediums started falling off so much I don't think it would have made much difference in the first place especially if Lewis's front wing was undamaged.
That's just how I see all of it. I think the race direction could have been much better and the biggest issue I saw with it was simply a lack of communication and then uncooperative teams.

I agree on most of your take, but I'm not sure if I agree on why Hamilton didn't pass Verstappen as he was slowing down. Every racing driver has it in their hearts to overtake a car that's going slower than them. Even if it were a VSC or whatever, it wouldnt be up to him to think about 'what if'. Even if it was, he could have just immediately given the place back without consequences. I reckon it was because of the DRS line, especially considering Hamilton has attempted to brake to get DRS from others in other races too(for example in Canada with Alonso), so he's aware enough to understand why Verstappen would brake there. Either way, I don't think anyone really should have been punished for it, it was just a weird and confusing situation all around.
What do you make of Hamilton deliberately pushing Max off track and only getting a black and white flag for it? To me, that was the only real injustice served in the race, just because it seems the FIA aren't always consistent in their punishment.

Then Max and Hamilton went pretty much all out for 25 laps or whatever, and I imagine that destroyed Max’s tires, since the tire life estimate is based off of relatively conservative driving. So Red Bull had the choice to either give back the position before the restart or get a time penalty.

The deal no deal during the red flag period although a but weird was perfectly legal since Michael Masi as race director has the authority to set the grid as he sees fit after a red flag period and if stewards dont agree they can intervene at any point. Basically he was trying to not have to go to the stewards when the decision could be quickly made and the outcome was very reasonable IMO. Even brundle and co were supportive of this

Imagine in football the referee going "Okay guys, you either give them the ball back or im gonna have to go to VAR" ... like wtf... aren't there set rules for this? If the driver messed up, penalize him, if not him, let him race. Why get into deals?

IMO it was a polite way of phrasing: The stewards will probably tell you to give the place back, would you like to do it now to avoid having to do it on track with that risk and so you can plan. or alternatively be told later to give it back when it will be way more inconvenient.

Does anyone else think the timing of Max's 5 second penalty wasn't chance? I think the stewards decided to wait to see if he was going to genuinely give up the place and then come back at Lewis or if he was going to give Lewis the place just in front of the DRS line and then immediately re-pass. When he did the latter they instantly gave the 5 second penalty.
Didn't there used to be a rule about not attacking back on the corner after you had given someone a place?

I think that it was well in the margins of grey racing rules (not dirty area yet) what HAM does too, vs Rosberg, Alonso, Vettel.
Same lap that VER let HAM take the position, HAM got a warning for doing just that, running people off.
Let's not pretend like Brazil was start of it, I would like to mention Silverstone, Spain, Turkey.
Albon Austria and Brazil, HAM is pretty grey area racer Himself. He just talks nicer....
For perspective in my opinion dirty racers would be someone like Schumi vs Hill and Prost vs Senna.
So I agree with Brazil and those kinds of moves should not be allowed, if the guy is beside you or ahead on outside, you cannot force them off.
So VER got penalty for that 2nd move was deserved, and HEY well He gave back position to HAM on 3 occassion actually (lost around 10 sec for that and got punted).
But it seems that HAM had a lapse of focus or tunneled vision on VER and hit VER back.
After watching Marcel Fischers video it has telemetry, and Live Replay, Heli Perspective, On-board Replay over and over.
For me it's actually simple, it was HAM that caused the collision.
There was no sudden braking, Ham had good 8 seconds before the punt (shifte down to 4th gear on a straight) and HAM actually hit the throttle just before hitting Max.
This one is on HAM and nothing convicned me otherwise and all penalties for VER were served and should been removed.
If VER got penalty for that, so that for me means it should been HAM that gotten the 10 sec penalty for causing the collision and VER would been the winner.
This a competition, F1, not a kid show.
HAM suddenly forgeting how to overtake as a Proffessional Veteran Driver is on Himself.
HAM is called VER a dirty driver in round about way, if so He is a one Himself. Just like there is a reason why Alonso and Albon called HAM that before.
Dino Chiesa (ROS and HAM previous Karting Boss) said about Monaco 2014, however, was slightly different.
"Lewis behaved a bit like a young, angry Italian," he surmised. "Nothing is ever his fault. He always thinks others are out to hurt him.
Nothing changed it seems, HAM just have a good way with words. To make believe that it's everyone else, but not him.
