To forestall the speculation. If you check the tracking for the whole flight, they had planned a direct flight from Montego Bay up the east coast of the Bahamas to make landfall just east of Wilmington DE, then direct to JFK (direct in line, I don't mean KJFK DCT). They took off 32 minutes late. As they reached the south east coast of the Bahamas they were diverted to around Boca Raton FL then followed just inside the coast up through Florida to North Carolina where they were routed fairly direct again. That added several hundred miles to the trip. At Atlantic City they were put in the hold for two circuits. By the time they got on the ground in Newark they had been in the air 43 minutes longer than planned. So given they started with the trip fuel, plus 30 minutes for hold, plus diversion fuel, plus a final reserve of 15 minutes, by the time they missed at JFK they had already burned their 30 minutes and had burned some of their diversion fuel too. And it's not that simple. They will have been dispatched with fuel slightly different from the calculations, and they may have had different winds and altitudes from their routing well to the west of the direct track they intended. So events just conspired to put them in this position, other than land earlier to get fuel there's not a lot they could have done. They couldn't plan on the re-route, though they knew about the bad weather at JFK.

It sounded like at first the copilot(?) declared an emergency, then the captain (?) said no emergency... just minimum fuel, then the copilot came back and declared the emergency for good. Did any one else catch that too?

The tower sounded a little less than impressed at hearing "emergency".

Why didn’t they have enough fuel for 45 mins of flight past there alternate?

The bit I find odd is that JFK has 22 runways as well. If the 13s weren't working, then declaring an emergency and insisting on one of the 22s at JFK would have been a more obvious plan.

What was the reason for the Go around and why the diversion?? This is really strange?
