Hi fellow sewing people!! I hope this tutorial is helpful or just some calming sewing content for your week. Let me know in the comments what you’re working on this week! 💖 I’m gonna start work on a tulle piece !
Beautiful! 🤩 I love love love your eye for patchwork colour/pattern combos 💕 Tip for people with overlockers, you can use them to gather! 😃 Instead of sewing two parallel lines on your regular machine, an overlocker does two lines of stitching at once (plus the looping thread). Pull on those two lines of stitching to start gathering 🤩 (you can also change the differential feed setting to make it start gathering the fabric while you sew) 🥰
I absolutely LOVE watching you work at your projects! I've been following your instagram for over a year and I'm so excited to see your adventures in long form!
I was so excited when you announced this video on Instagram! I could hardly wait. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us! 💖🌅 What a treat to get to learn from you. It’s a huge dream of mine to someday make beautiful twirly dresses like yours from thrifted/surplus/scrap fabrics! Thank you Carly for being such an inspiration 🌺
This is the greatest video ever. THANK YOU!!! I've been so bamboozled by the thought of making a video explaining how I sew things, but watching you do it makes me feel like its possible now. You're so clear and easy to understand and fun to watch. Your works inspire many of my own. I think I am going to make a black and yellow bee milkmaid dress now YAY. I may need to do a few more tiers for that tho haha. Thank you for you and this video!!
Omg Carly I'm so silly!! I've always loved milk maid dresses on other people but have always been a bit iffy about making myself one because I don't want it to be *too* floaty around the waist... BUT THE WAIST TIES ! GENIUS !
I’m on my own to learn how to make garments and your video is really helping and lovely as well. I’ll definitely try making a dress with my fabric pieces! Thank you for your video and I’ll look forward to your next video😍
I tried my hand at making this dress and thanks to your awesome video I was pretty happy with how it turned out! Was impressed with your work before but now, after trying it myself, I am so in awe of you! Do you have any tips for attaching the second tier when there's such a wide amount of fabric to match up? That was definitely the step that I struggled with the most! 💕💕💕
Ah I'm so glad!!! How wonderful. The second tier does take some patience but usually I try and match up the two side seams with the two side seams & that helps!
Have you ever tried using a bias tape folder? Clover makes them for various widths. I resisted buying one for many years because I thought it was so easy to just fold the bias binding manually.. BUT the folder is amazing and so fun and easy to use. I recommend! I’m working on a moto jacket pattern this week to eventually make out of leather (😱) but I’m starting with a cotton prototype to practice.
I have! They are so wonderful. I ended up enjoying making it with my hands more, but they are a wonderful tool. Oooooh good luck with your jaket... that sounds soooo good.
I’ve followed you on IG for ages and was so excited to see that you were doing tutorials on your beautiful creations 😊I’ve noticed in both videos you have a cute puffed sleeve undershirt…is that self drafted cause I think it would be so handy ❤❤❤
Hi, love the video! I was wondering if you are going to make more tutorials on your designs or maybe release some patterns? I love everything you make and really want to sew some dresses. Lots of love 🥰
I’ve always found it helps to do the gathering in sections! I like to make one gather on each side of the skirt because breaking those threads is the worst. 😬
Hey! This is an awesome tutorial ♡ One quick question/request. How did you draft the bodice and facing pattern pieces? I could just kind of eyeball the shape.... but if there is a method you used that would be easier that would be lovely!
Eyeballing the shape is great! You can also start from a rectangle bodice shape that is slightly bigger then your bust & then add a little curve from the top to 1/3 way down the side seam to accomodate your arm. Hope that helps!
Hello, I know I'm very late for this video, but I would really love to try this! Since it would be my first sewing project (besides pillows and sheets) I was wondering if there's any Pattern on sale for this specific dress. Thank you!
Hi friend! Thank you for watching!! There isn't a pattern you can buy sorry!! The closest to this design I've seen on Etsy recently is called The Cozette Dress!
@@fromcarlyb thank you very very much! I've started doing a pinafore as my first project and I'm using your gathering technique, but with hand stitching! Your channel is amazing and you're so sweet to be giving so much attention to all the questions people ask. Sending love from Italy! ❤
You can start with a rectangle that is slightly bigger then your bust size & then add a little curve where the arm goes! If you can kind of replicate the shape that I show in the video then that’s great! It should sit above the bust & end slightly below the bust. Hope that helps a little!
If you can take your bust measurement and then add 5-7cm to that that will give you a rectangle bodice & then you can just add a little curve under the arm & a little bit of a diagonal line on the side seam! I hope that helps. 💖
Yay!!! All the best!! I will do a video on this soon! But usually I try find fabric that has similar vibes to each other or sit are relatively complimentary! I don't worry about it too much & follow my gut! (if something looks cool together I just go for it)
Hi! This may be a silly question but as a novice sewer who hasn’t ventured into pattern drafting at all: would the measurements for the tiers need to change at all for a plus sized individual? It may just be that I need to do some mock-ups and adjust as needed that way! Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial-I’ve been dying to make a dress just like this since I stumbled across your Instagram!!!
The measurements should be totally fine for any body as the skirts are super gathered! But if you want to add more length to each skirt tier to maintain the fullness - that's awesome too! Just up to your personal taste.
I have no sewing machine, do you think it’s possible to make this by hand or with those mini purple sewing machines online? Wonderful video by the way!
Carly, maybe I’m being a bit silly but I don’t understand how I can cut out the bodice and facing pieces without having a pattern to follow? The pieces are not geometrical shapes so how do I know how to cut them? Thank you. Ps: thank you for making this video !! As a beginner it makes sewing seem so much more accessible.
It is a little weird to start with! If you make the bodice a rectangle that is about 5 -10cm bigger then your bust then that will achieve a similar look! You can add a little dip/curve under the arm and slightly angle the side seam to be diagonal as additional steps. Hope that helps!
for anyone wondering how to do the bodice part, Jess Dang made a similar dresss ("DIY Tiered maxi dress") and explained wonderfully how to make a bodice with your own measurements: ruclips.net/video/N5-WD9k-CKQ/видео.html The bodice is a bit different but you can adjust the pattern!
I really hate gathering. Don’t get me wrong I love the way it looks, but my thread always seems to snap while I’m sewing or when I pull it I’m always worried about snapping it. One thing I found worked well for me is zig zagging over yarn. I used a thin crocheting yarn and changed my zig zag width a little until it didn’t catch and that worked really well for me. It didn’t matter if my thread broke while I was sewing and because the yarn is stronger than thread? I wasn’t worried while I was gathering either!
There's no pdf pattern pieces yet for this piece sorry - if you're keen you'll have to self draft but hopefully this video helps the process make sense! Let me know if you have any issues
I used to just overlock.... I think the sewing line creates a lot more security!! I think it looks cleaner from the outside too... you cant see the stitching when you pull the seam apart!
Could you explain how to get the size right for the bodice? Bad at math and tried your equation of my bust (all around 37 inches) plus 10 cm divided by 4 and I got 8.5 cm which is way to small for a bodice 🥲
I'm sorry it's been a little difficult! If it's your first time trying a bodice shape like this & it's causing you grief, you can certainly have a look around on Etsy for patterns similar. Maybe type in 'summer dress sewing pattern pdf' and I think there will be a few bodices that will help!!

Any tips on how to best create the bodice and facing pattern from scratch? Or is there a pattern you would recommend purchasing to help guide the way?
You can start with a rectangle that is slightly bigger then your bust size & then add a little curve where the arm goes! If you can kind of replicate the shape that I show in the video then that’s great! It should sit above the bust & end slightly below the bust. Hope that helps a little!
THE MILKMAID DRESS! Absolutely obsessed with this design. What measurements should we take to make the bodice pattern?
If you can take your bust measurement and then add 5-7cm to that that will give you a rectangle bodice & then you can just add a little curve under the arm & a little bit of a diagonal line on the side seam! I hope that helps. 💖
@@fromcarlyb Thank you so much!
@@fromcarlyb just seen this comment which answers my question on how to draw the bodice. Thank you !!

How wide should the bodice piece be?? Struggling to find the right size that will easily pull on over the head. Thank you!!
I would recommend adding at least 7- 10 cm onto your bust size for ease!!
