    thanks for also showing us your weaknesses! it's reassuring to know that you can do a whole bunch of stuff with enough practice. setting realistic gradual goals and keeping track of progress is also perfectly showcased. and thanks for reminding us that people still need to practice a little to not lose what they gained!

    As someone living with scoliosis, the back stretches are painfully relatable

  • @christinepoppy3277
    @christinepoppy3277 7 месяцев назад +29

    Doing the splits with your back leg flexed and your shin propped up against a wall is a great progression for the front splits before getting into the over splits, as it forces you into more internal rotation of the back hip so you can square your hips more and stretch your hip flexor.
    Great video!❤

    • @dangarbutt5210
      @dangarbutt5210 7 месяцев назад

      Sorry haha I can’t quite visualise what you mean? What part of the back leg is flexed? And the shin being against the wall…is that to say your knees bent? Getting more bent as the stretch gets higher intensity?

    • @christinepoppy3277
      @christinepoppy3277 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@dangarbutt5210 Yes, lol, I mean the knee being flexed of the back leg! So basically just a split with the back knee bent. And yes, you can get a deeper/more intense stretch this way. I’ve been doing it myself to get a more square splits and it’s definitely helped. It also helps if you want to back bend while in a stretch as your torso will be less twisted, because your hips are more neutral. Hope that makes sense! I’m not the best at explaining positioning

    5:15 This used to be my default sitting position when I was a kid, it just seemed normal to me. At some point (I don't remember when exactly), someone told me that sitting like that was bad for my knees, so I had to learn how to sit like other people. Thinking back on it now, it does explain why internal rotations are easier for me (I'm pretty stiff when it comes to external rotations in comparison). Recently I've been working on regaining my strength in that area, I still have most of the flexibility but it's hard for me to hold that position for as long as I used to.

    I feel like, looking at your back bend, that it's the upper back specifically that's too stiff, and it means you're having to put too much strain in the low back to get into a good arch. I'd work on thoracic spine mobility as a first focus. That should take a lot of strain off the low back and allow a quite good arch.

    nicely done David!
    It's very inspiring to see you're progres but also wee how not working on something can bring it backwards.
    I can recommend for your back bend you can work with some of the ashtanga yoga intermediate series poses, I would say:
    salabhasana or locust pose
    dhanurasana or the arch pose
    ushtrasana or the camel pose
    laghu vajrasana or little thunder pose
    kapotasana A and B or full pigeon pose
    can make a solid foundation to your backbend.
    Also as you practice the backbend try and make spaces between your vertebrae I know it sounds like a counteraction, but in that way you're elongating the spine.
    and well room for improvement there is indeed, you already put your foot behind your head...try both at the same time, in yoga it's called dwipada sirsana.
    and maybe if you're up to a challege...you could try the 3rd series of the Ashtanga yoga.
    any ways...stay flexy!

    back bend sure mine looks almost like that doing it today for the first time in years (hurt like a muther tho tbf) but the shoulder thing was craaaazy looked edited vs mine having poor mobility for a reason. also workin with a recently nagging hip injury from slipping into the splits half my lifetime ago, banging the floor when I couldn't get closer than a few inches otherwise, hip popped couldn't move my leg then fainted and had a seizure over it. Flexibility is weird, I can put my right leg behind my head followed by my left but not the other way around, but I can't do a squat without elevated heels, and heel mobility being my primary/only focus for years has had no improvement :( long torso short calf gang? Touching the floor always felt like cheating and back defo too rounded vs hip hinge

      Agree for the shoulders for example. I am hypermobile in my shoulders and was climbing, mis graped and fell down and my arm fell all the way back. It was hurting a lot. Long story short, after a lot of research it seemed my labrum was torn and my bone dented by my other bone. Surgery later and it's back to 90% after years. Because torn never 100% again. I, blame my flexibility for my arm going back and not stopping but going back until my shoulder labrum tearing. Flexibility is good but be careful.

Since it felt great and comfortable I wanted to stretch a little more that I normally do and reached for my foot in the split and then POP. I heard it, it was so loud my friend heard it. It felt okay at first but now (a couple hours later) it hurts and I'm icing it. Does this seem like something I should go to the doctor for or just keep an eye on it and rest until its better.
