Can a Harbor Freight Router work in a Hobby CNC?

  • Many hobby CNC machines utilize simple trim routers as a spindle. The Genmitsu 6050 ProVer v2 came with a 65mm mount so when I saw the Bauer trim router on sale at Harbor Freight for $40, I had to pick one up and give it a try.

Exactly what I wanted to know. I saw the Bauer at Harbor Freight and wondered if it would be a good way to save some cash. Hello from Willmar!

    Thank you for this!
I got a harbor freight router (the same one you got) and I wanted to find someone who had the same idea. I lost my confidence when my XTool D1 Pro 20 w started having issues. I got new limit switches from XTool and it still isn't working right. When it was working I made these weed trays just to see how it would turn out; just samples and my customers went crazy for them. I got the Gemitsu 4040 pro to do the same with CNC using cutting boards and I was scared to try it and scared to change out the spindle for the router. Your video gave me some confidence to give it a short. I just purchased the Gemitsu laser for my 4040 Pro. They have an anniversary sale going on now.
If you have any recommended videos, about CNC and Xtool I would greatly appreciate it.

I just tried the same thing last week with the Harbor Freight Hercules model which is supposed to be an upgrade from the Bauer model. I was setting it up in the Shapeoko XXL 3 and I couldn't get it in the machine mount. Upon further inspection, I found that the diameter of the Hercules was 66mm instead of 65mm. Maybe I will try the Bauer as the replacement for the Carbide3D router which is $80 and I am not impressed with mine because the spindle is running out about 0.020. I would really like an ER11 collet system because I have several tools and cutters that are not either 1/4 or 1/8 in diameter.

I'll see if I can get a calipers on this one to get an accurate diameter. The Hercules is on sale this week for $60 but if it's 66mm then it likely wont fit many mounts properly. The blue color would match this CNC frame more, and isn't that what's important? :D

Some CNC machines take quite some time to assemble. My Onefinity CNC was by far the easiest to assemble, if you don't count building the large table base that it sits on.

Been running my Bauer about 3 years. I have 2 of them. I bought a kit from Temu to build a router table. Going to the the 2nd Bauer.

Good to hear you've been running one for a while. Are you still on the original collet?

It will be interesting to see how it holds up and how the collet continues to work as you put more time on it. The price is certainly good.

Yeah me too, I want to run some more jobs to dial in the optimal speeds and feeds. Then I'll do some longer runs on more complex carves and see how it holds up.

I have been using the master craft, for over a month and no issues as of yet. It has done everything I have wanted it to do.

That is another one I looked at, but the $40 price on this one made me jump on it. Good to hear it's working well for you!

I tried this router when the bushings went out on my Makita. It bogged down cutting 1/8” in pine 😢

I think the quality control on these might be a little hit or miss. Some people have ran fine and others find they have trouble.

I just came with the smaller collet. I have a few for 1/4" bits from my other CNC machine.

Nice! I don't think any of the issues are the fault of the router itself - with some practice I think that will be a worthwhile upgrade option.
I think the alterative here in the UK to Harbor Freight is probably Machine Mart, but similar products to the Bauer trim router are going to be available in Wickes or B&Q as well.
I like it. I definitely am interested in that Genmitsu 6050 ProVer v2 and something like that would improve things. Combined with the xTOOL D1 Pro I have, it would be a powerful combination.

Yep, these are just the initial tests to get a feel for if it has viability in this application. I plan to run more tests to dial in the settings and put more stress on it.
