What is helicobacter pylori bacteria or H. Pylori for short? Dr. Barry J. Marshall and Dr. J. Robin Warren were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize for medicine for their work in discovering the Helicobacter Pylori bacterium and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease back in 1982. How it all started was when Dr. Robin Warren, a pathologist from Perth observed small bacteria colonizing the lower part of the stomach in about 50% of patients who had their stomach biopsied. He also observed that signs of inflammation were always present in the stomach walls close to where he saw the bacteria. Dr. Barry Marshall, a colleague, became interested in these findings and they together succeeded in cultivating this previously unknown bacterial species. Until then, the medical world was still entrenched in the belief that lifestyle caused gastric ulcers. Today, it has been proven already that H. Pylori causes more than 90% of duodenal ulcers and 80% of gastric ulcers.
Some of the common symptoms of gastritis and ulcer disease are abdominal bloatedness and nausea, burping and belching, abdominal pain, heartburn, bad breath, loss of appetite, and in severe cases even loss of weight.
Now, think about it, I’m pretty sure most of you have had one of these symptoms that I’ve just mentioned. In fact, an estimated 50% of adults in the world today have H.Pylori infection. Higher if you are in developing countries and Lower if you are in an industrialized, developed country.
50%. That’s pretty high. And when gastritis and ulcer disease are severe, they may even lead to bleeding from the walls of the stomach and intestines, resulting In you feeling fatigued and having fainting spells, anemia or low blood count, black foul-smelling tarry stools. in severe cases even hemorrhage which may be fatal. In the long run, it can even lead to gastric cancer. Of course, some other known causes of Gastritis and ulcer disease include smoking and drinking, regular use of pain medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDS ) which includes aspirin and ibuprofen, stress.
It's still not known how H. Pylori spreads. Researchers suspect it may be spread via unclean food and water or through contact with an infected person’s saliva and other body fluids.
Risk factors to getting it includes overcrowding and poor sanitation or habitation conditions. Therefore good handwashing and drinking clean water are some of the ways to prevent an H.Pylori infection.
Evidence has also shown that adults age 50-60 and above tends to have a higher prevalence of H.Pylori within their gut. When the bacteria enters our body, it attaches itself to the walls of our gut and produces a toxin that causes inflammation. If it is not treated, prolonged inflammation may eventually result in ulcers and cancer formation.
So logically speaking, anyone with symptoms of gastritis and ulcer disease should get themselves checked for H.Pylori.
The most accurate test will be a gastric endoscopy.
A small camera will be passed through your mouth and esophagus into the stomach and small intestine. Through this tube, a small sample of the stomach wall lining where the inflammation is seen can be collected and sent for biopsies and CLO testing.
Through the biopsy and CLO test, confirmation of H.Pylori bacteria infection can be detected.
The advantage of this test is that visual confirmation of gastritis or ulcer disease can be confirmed and gastric cancers can also be excluded.
An alternative, the non-invasive test would be a urea breath test.
This is a simple test where you are required to blow into a bag before and after swallowing of a pill to see if the carbon dioxide level rises in the second bag where you breathe into it.
An increase in carbon dioxide would indicate an H.Pylori infection. This is a good test to be done in children with whom an H.Pylori infection is suspected as young children may not be good candidates to go through an endoscopic procedure.
There are a few other tests such as blood testing for H.Pylori antibodies, Stool testing for H.pylori antigen, or an h.pylori culture to attempt to grow the bacteria from your stool sample. Now the good news is that there are effective treatments to eradicate H.Pylori infection. It involves using a combination of gastric acid reduction medications with antibiotics in what is known as triple therapy or quadruple therapy.

i suffered with this same pain for years until one day when i found myself in emergency. it was told i needed my gall bladder removed. After my surgery i still had pain so i was tested for H-pylori bacteria and found positive . I was given two different antibiotics which completely cured me. SAME! They wanted to take my gallbladder, but I knew better. Found pylori, ulcers, SIBO and more. Thank God I advocated for myself forever. Seriously it took that long for healthcare to stop gaslighting me.
@MariaJames-dj2gi Clarithromycin, Flagyl, Pepto, Amoxicillin, Talicia, Levaquin etc. I would suggest you get tested for SIBO as well. Be sure to not take antibiotics, PPI, otc antacids as well for at least a month prior to getting non-egd testing as these will suppress the bacteria and cause fall-negatives. I know from experience. Prior to EGD dx, I asked my pcp for a Pylori test. She ordered it but didn't tell me to stop those things bc she didn't know to. I'm paying the price with bleeding ulcers and gastritis food sensitivity, light and sound. A lot has eased but it has taken me about 7 months and 76 lbs and 4 different combos of meds and i can't get rid of it. The healthcare system is horrible and they ignore you and you have to chase them them down for follow up testing but they will call you randomly for a scope bc it's easy money for them.

I experienced many episodes of acute pain, vomiting, diarrhea; calling the ambulance. Removed my gallbladder (probably unnecessarily, still had episodes. Finally had inability to eat a great number of foods; at last a endoscopy revealed the H Pylori infection. Hopefully the medication will eradicate this nasty infection and be fully recovered.

I read up on the antibiotics and it's scary. Some people complained of having black stool when they start taking the antibiotics... But they did not have dark stool before. I wonder why the stool turn dark after the antibiotics. Is there anything you can use other than antibiotics to keep the bacteria under control. As well as won't irritate the ulcer?
Dark stool is common on antibiotics, doesn't mean anything bad.

Can h pylori affect the urinary tract??
My 6-year old old son had symptoms of stomach ache almost daily, then delveloped rashes onhis face, elbows and abdomen, had a runny nose and cough due to mucus in his lungs, and was bloated, getting full quick. Doctors need to be informed on how the bacteria works too. The triple therapy treatment may work and if it does, it leaves your stomach damaged. H pillory works by lowering your acid in your stomach, but we take ppi in our treatment which keeps our acid levels low. We also need ways in rebuilding our gut and possibly our acid to prevent it from coming back.
I'm positive for H Pillory, and constantly looking for a good diet to follow that will for sure kill the bacteria when I start my antibiotics this weekend. And then ways to rebuild gut lining and possibly acid.

I think we should consider implementing regular screenings for this bug since youth. I never had ANY gastric symptoms my entire life. Then all of a sudden I get diagnosed with this because of sudden unintentional weight loss and now I worry I have cancer. This is so insidious and silent, yet potentially fatal if one is asymptomatic, since it is directly linked to some cancers. I don't even know how long I've had it, could have been decades.

I did a stool sample. I always avoided them before but I was losing blood and doc asked me to do one, so H.Pylori was discovered. I di the course of treatment for two weeks. Then did another stool sample and found it had been eradicated. I used to get indigestion all the time but I take Lanzaprozale everyday to protect my stomach and I can eat most foods now with no indigestion.

I’ve been having stomach issues for 2 years now. It wasn’t the worst in the beginning but this last year it has been quite bad. In these last two years I was told to increase my fibre intake , eat less processed foods etc as there was a worry that I may have had ibs.. Just told I was told that my results came back as positive for h pylori. I know that with treatment I should be clear of this bacteria, but I am worried that the length of time I have been infected may have caused permanent damage to my body.. can someone give me some advice please. 😞
Once treated , the damage should gradually recover. It shouldn’t be permanent.

I had pylori for 3 years , 2 years before diagnosis s 1 year, after first treatment… it came back within 6 weeks of first treatment , you know yr symptoms, my doctors kept telling me it hadn’t come back coz my stool test was negative and so was breathe test, I insisted and insisted it had come back! Another camera diagnosed a second infection, more antibiotics then 6 weeks later symptoms cane back a 3rd time with the doctors nor believing it had come back again, don’t let yr doctors tell u any different , keep getting follow up checkups, I now 5 years on have stomach damage, I can’t put weight on, I’m always full after a few mouthfuls of food, and I’m always tired and nauseous after eating a meal…

I suddenly started burping excessively a few months ago, which was not normal for me. It progressively got worse over the weeks and I started to lose my appetite. And really bad anxiety too. I finally decided to go to the doctor after 3 months of this going on.
He diagnosed me with gastritis but didn’t do any test. I’ve been taking some acid reducers that the doctor prescribed me. But not much results after two weeks. I’m able to eat. But excessive belching continues especially before eating.

Hi i had h pylori and had treatment which did not work had test again its still there and had 2nd treatment. Its been ablut 6 or 7 weeks have pain in my chest lost my appetite and feel tired. My gp any doctors are saying its reflux. I have appointment on friday. I also get hiccups too burp using gaviscon but it doesnt help with pain. H pylori is very strong bacteria everyone has it but our ones are wake now start causing symtoms such as pain burp a lot etc. So i will try recipe that my auntie gaved me she suffered from this a lot which made her chronic reflux after she tried this recipe she says shes much better same with my cousin. My 1y yrs old daughter tested h pylori positive so before her one gets worse she will try this recipe too medicine makes it worse reduces your acid and makes it worse. Theoretically there is higher chance for your family to also have h pylori infection if you already have it.
So if your family members do have symptoms then I would suggest for a test too

I've been having severe heartburn, stomach pains, nausea, light headedness and diarrhea for the last 2 weeks. I went to get tested and found I was infected with H. Pylori.
I was given pantomed first until my test results came back. Pantomed has already helped my diarrhea calm down and my acid reflux has lessened as well. I also developed rashes on my arms. I wonder if this bacterial infection could possibly cause urticaria/rashes? It started at the same time I was having stomach issues.
H pylori is not known to cause Rashes thought. At least not to my knowledge

I've had really bad acid reflux lately and for about 2 weeks, my uvula has been sitting on my tongue. My doctor thought this uvula irritation/swolleness could be caused by silent reflux - perhaps by h. pylori. We think silent as omprazol and acidex (antiacid) have both eased the acidic feeling, but not the reflux itself. I'm still awaiting days for my stool results... (no breath test done due to lockdown protocols)

2 tablespoons ACV (apple cider vinegar with the Mother) put into 8 oz water stir and then just sip this as you need it throughout the day for gastric reflux does not take much to calm the reflux down but does need a minute to start working. It is possible that you tested negative, then it returned. I've had it twice, and one of the times after three weeks of taking doctor prescribed antibiotics, I still had it, and the next three weeks they prescribed a stronger antibiotic. Infections resistant to antibiotics are increasing.

After my Endo I was diagnosed with this.. never heard of this before was prescribed amoxicillin but had sever diarrhea 😬 so I got a new prescription called Talicia but I have to take 4 big capsules with food every 8 hours smh today is day 1 wish me luck!!

Hello, i hope you could reply. I was prescribed with combination of antibiotics. Should i take the antibiotics after meals? ( amoxicillin & clarithromycin). Should i take both at the same time or wait one hr interval after each type of antibiotics?
hey! perhaps this question should be posed to the doctor who issued you with the medications?
but in general, you can take both antibiotics together.
I would recommend usually after meals as clarithroycin may sometimes cause gastric discomfort.

One thing must be remembered for treatment of H. Pylori that never take antibiotics as a first option because long term use of antibiotics will damage your stomach and intestines so your condition will become worse, try to treat with prebiotics and herbal treatments as first option. Please complete your triple therapy. It helps to kill the h pylori.
The pain, if it’s due to gastritis may take longer to gradually get better. Sometimes as long as 1-2 months after treatment

This started like 4 months ago I feel like there is something stuck in my throat all the time, it burns most of the time, and i feel nauseous every day, i went to the hospital to check it out, they ran some blood work and did an x-ray on my chest and swapped my throat every thing came out good, so he assumed i have acid reflux, so he prescribed me pantoprazole and so far its not working i still feel nauseous and my throat still bothers me. Do you think I have this bacteria, I don't want to keep taking this acid reflux medicine for nothing, can someone help me please.

Pantoprazole will help but some patients may need 1-2 months of treatment before symptoms improve.
There is no harm checking for h pylori either via scope or urea breath test

Wrong! Taking Pantaprezole will harm you more than do any good. You have reflux symptoms because your stomach acidity is lowered. And most likely it is because of H. Pylori. By taking PPIs you will continue lowering your stomach acidity which will make your esophageal valve not close properly. You will continue having heartburn and reflux. You need to do exactly the opposite, you need to increase stomach acidity so that your valve can react to acid by closing properly. You need to take apple cider vinegar twice a day a tablespoon of it in a glass of water. Take it for 2 months, and then slowly reduce the dose. Trust me!

What is the safest operation to do when you suffer from this bacteria? A gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass? I am entertaining the thought of having weightloss surgery and just hade to sent in stool because my bloodtest might be positive for this bacteria. Hello, I was diagnosed with H. Pylori back in 2015. I was prescribed 4 antibiotics to take together for 14 days. Got the test again in 2017, 2019 and this year 2021 still positive. Every time I get prescribed the 4 antibiotics but this year 2021 I got prescribed 3 instead of 4. Still positive. Lost my appetite can only eat yougurt and ice. If I eat anything else I get excruciating pain I still force myself and I’ll eat 2-3 bite of food. My iron dropped to 4 and my hemoglobin dropped to 8.2. I’m getting iron infusions next Wednesday but as for now my doctor told me all I can do is get checked once a year in case it turns to cancer we catch it in time. Do you have any advice that might help me?

I got treated for positive h pylori 7 months ago and then it came out to a negative test. However, I went to retest again after 2 more months and I was positive again and have been positive since. I have oily foul smelling stools with mucus mixed in too. This has been going on for 4 months now. I took 3 stool tests for parasite ova, and fecal fat. Parasite negative and fecal fat came back normal. I get frequent heartburn but I rarely have any abdominal pain. I went to a GI and told them about my symptoms. They prescribed me XIFAXAN for 2 weeks and I’m 8 days in. No changes. They recommended I get a colonoscopy if there were no changes

I had an endoscopy last month and it showed hpylori positive .
