    Stallone was originally supposed to be the lead in Beverly Hills Cop. He wanted a movie more like Cobra and the studio disagreed. They couldn't come to an agreement so he walked away and made Cobra. They hired Eddie and Beverly Hills Cop was very different than what Stallone wanted.

    • @JayBondReacts

      @@JayBondReacts both are great for both actors.. BHC plays to Murphy's strengths.. And he sadly never got better than that entry. Cobra is great but just not in Stallone's top 5..I mean you have Rocky, Rambo, Copland, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man... Cobra just falls below those.. Great film.. but not as iconic.

    "You're a disease, and I'm the cure."
    Fun Fact: A very rare workprint of the movie has circulated among fans. Although most copies are poor quality, it has 30 to 40 minutes of footage not available in any other version. It also has all of the X-rated material removed from the final release.
    Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The custom 1950 Mercury driven by Cobretti in the film was actually owned by star Sylvester Stallone. The studio produced stunt doubles of the car for use in some of the action sequences, such as the jump from the second floor of the parking garage.
    Down To Size Fact: At one point during filming, Sylvester Stallone complained to cinematographer Ric Waite that they were falling behind, and said he and his crew needed to work harder. Waite responded by saying that if Stallone "gets his hands off Brigitte Nielsen's ass and stops showing off to his bodyguards" they will make better time. Stallone was shocked that somebody would talk to him that way, but he toned down his ego for a few weeks. In an interview, Waite also said that Stallone had a great sense of humor, despite his huge ego. He also confirmed a rumor that Stallone was the true director of the film, calling credited director George P. Cosmatos a good producer, but a bad director.

    Cobra is where Stallone's ego starts to get ahead of his acting 😅 Stallone loves to have a writing credit and tried to make so many script changes on Beverly Hills Cop that they bounced him. Those script elements, and a liberal dose of Paula Gosling's Fair Game, became Cobra - Stallone's too cool for school Dirty Harry meets Mad Max killer cop 😎
    Nice Brian Thompson catch! His unique face is always great to see pop up and he has a great voice. Look for him in Alien Nation (a great 80's buddy cop with James Caan and Mandy Patinkin) and Fright Night 2 (88) when you get around to them.

    • @JayBondReacts

      It's wild that this is what he did instead of Beverly Hills Cop. It's unfortunate this didn't get popular though. It's got so many elements that should have made this successful. Alien Nation I may have seen as a kid, but I'm open to a reaction of that one and Fright Night I actually didn't know they made a sequel. I think some of his one liners were more about what is both not being said, but implied, like when he responds to being told he has an attitude problem by saying that he just has a little one, implying that the guy who said it to him has a much bigger attitude problem than his.

    The bad guy Brian Thompson also had a sinister part in several episodes of "The X-Files." I think the one time I recall him being a good guy was in a TV series called "Key West" in 1993. It was part of the wave of short-lived shows about quirky towns and their residents that were kind of inspired by the success of "Northern Exposure." Thompson played a goofy sheriff often in a uniform with short shorts.

    According to some people who reviewed the movie, they had to cut a lot of parts out mainly due to Sly wanting to rush this movie out before another action flick came out the same week
    And some of the killing scenes were also heavily cut due to the MPAA, one of the scenes that was found was when the axe gang killed the first woman they severed her hand and sent the hand to the police station as a to taunt the cops, the janitor scene was supposed to be more brutal along with the nurse who got dragged under the gurney
    I think the movie itself was supposed to be 2 hours long but due to Sly wanting to rush the film out to compete with another action flick (that was coming out on Friday) they cut most scenes but it did well at the theater

    I would call Cobra Sly's answer to Dirty Harry. Funny the villain from that film, the infamous Scorpio (Andrew Robinson) plays The antagonist cop against Cobra. Stallone was originally cast in Beverly Hills Cop but wanted to edge the gritty action elements.. when he left that he took those elements to create Cobra.

  • @chrisgrove7829
    @chrisgrove7829 2 года назад +1

    Andy Robinson Who played Monte also played Scorpio the villain in the first Dirty Harry movie starring Clint Eastwood as San Francisco inspector Dirty Harry Callahan. In fact, I always heard that Cobra was kind of Stallone’s ode to Dirty Harry, which makes me wish there was a Rambo meats Dirty Harry movie out there. I figure with the right script it could work:)

    • @JayBondReacts
      @JayBondReacts  2 года назад +1

      Oh awesome! I haven't seen Dirty Harry but plan to do a reaction at some point. I need to dive into some Clint Eastwood. I've wanted to see Gran Torino but I should work my way up. 😂

    • @chrisgrove7829
      @chrisgrove7829 2 года назад

      @@JayBondReacts Gran Torino was excellent and so are his westerns, but I was always partial to Dirty Harry for kind of inventing the whole rogue cop thing like John McClane in Die Hard, or Riggs in Lethal Weapon. The first three were made in the 70’s, and 70’s San Francisco definitely had a vibe. The first one is loosely based on the real life Zodiac Killer ala Andy Robinson, as Scorpio. Also Reni Santoni who plays Stallone’s partner in Cobra also plays Dirty Harry’s partner in the first one. A lot of critics didn’t really know how to take Dirty Harry. Pauline Kael called him a fascist or something like that, then in the sequel, he’s taking on a group of vigilante cops who try to recruit him, and the third he’s working with a Black Panther leader to take down a terrorist group. So, he’s kind of a multi-faceted character. And it definitely captures that lovely 70’s vibe of San Francisco, perfectly:)

    I think things were on the fringe - the one liners were good but not memorable. The attacks were tv movie of the week quality. When Cobra said they have someone on the inside, since we didn't see many other cops, it was easy to figure out who that was. Here’s everything that was supposed to happen
    The first murder victim having her throat cut and hands severed;
    An Asian American child delivers a wrapped present to the LAPD office as instructed by one of the members of the New World. As the officer tells the child to stay, he proceeds to unwrap the present only to discover traces of blood coming from the box. The officer answers a phone call from one of the members of the New World, who speaks a cryptic message of the murder victim's hands inside the box;
    More dead bodies in the autopsy scene, including lingering shots of naked and mutilated bodies of murdered women;
    The New World's day jobs as welders, carpenters and fish market employees and cleaners, which were originally part of the "Angel of the City" sequences. These were cut and replaced with the scenes of the New World doing a routine workout ritual as seen in the film's opening;
    An extended death scene for Ingrid's photographer Dan, in which he is hit several more times with axes and attempts to escape, only to slip on his own blood and fall down in a puddle of it before being finished off with even more hits;
    The scene in which the Night Slasher tries to kill Ingrid in the hospital was cut down for pacing and content. The deaths of the janitor and nurse were originally shown onscreen and a scene where a police guard outside Ingrid's room is killed by the Night Slasher was also cut. A later scene where Cobretti mentions the officer's death to Monte was cut to maintain continuity, which as a result made the editing of that scene choppy;
    More scenes of the townspeople (including the motel owner and diner waitress) being killed during the climax, including a scene in which one is hit in the face with axe; two of these death scenes appeared in 1990's TV versions of the film, but with most of the more graphic shots removed;
    Graphic close-ups of the Night Slasher's wound after he is impaled on the hook; Cobretti repeatedly forces the hook deeper into the Night Slasher as he screams in pain;
    After the demise of the Night Slasher, Cobretti and Ingrid leave the factory but before they can exit, countryside police intervene wherein the sheriff demands from them of what took place in the factory.

      Haha That's totally fair. That is what's weird about this one, it doesn't seem self aware. Watching Commando, you can tell they knew what they were doing but here it's kinda fuzzy.

    Sorry to keep commenting but on a motorcycle the throttle is on the right, so you pretty much have to be a lefty to shoot off a bike. Even then everything on a bike is balance.

      Yup, it is! I looked it up after I saw Rambo 2 cause I recognized the last name. Mandy had its moments. I wasn't the biggest fan but perhaps that was because it was pretty hyped up so I expected something different.

    Thay tried to get some Dirty Harry vibes with those two actors, his buddy and the asshole boss.. The asshole boss was supposed to be with the bad guys too, but theyd ropped it.

      I need that gorier cut! It was so noticeable that they cut early on everything. Tone down the slasher aspect, while maintaining the action stuff. I kinda get it but damn.
