Ah, the beauty of what music can provide.. you brought me back over 35 years ago.. this was, courtesy of an excellent teacher who has since passed, the first song I ever dove deeply into as a fingerpicker. A beautiful song, as you well know, and have presented here for us. I will now revisit 'Dust In the Wind' and re-learn it. I say - Thank You - Marco!
For the intro just remember the number 103. That’s the fret sequence on the B string. It repeats over and over through the chord changes. So, for the opening C chord (B string) you fret 1, then 0 (open), then 3, then 1. For Asus2 you pick up where you left off and fret 0, 3, 1, 0. When you go back to C fret 3, 1, 0,3. And, so on. I’ve heard some folks always going back to the 1 on the chord changes but that’s not how Kansas plays it. Hope that all makes sense!
Wow, you and your song choice are just what I needed this quiet, somber, difficult morning for me !!! I hadn’t seen any of your videos for a while, ( every one of them are always so beautiful, calming and motivating, physically, emotionally and spiritually !!! I am an older guy, I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar but I just didn’t, now I am battling multiple physical problems such as a Parkinson’s disease called Dystonia that has taken away most of my ability to speak, chew and swallow and my dexterity, also recently diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis, Atrial Fibrillation and failed a colon cancer screening test, but I have faith in God, you are a blessing to anyone desiring to play the guitar, thank you again for your videos, instructions and encouragement and motivation sir !!! ❤
I believe you will still be able to play... I have tendonitis in my elbows and shoulders, carpal tunnel in my wrist, arthritis in my finger joints... all that, no thanks to a truck-driving career I wished I had never taken on.....I can't play certain guitars, I have to mainly play nylon-stringers, (they're easier) and I struggle to play my 12 string, but I still manage to crank out tunes.... hang in there, my friend.
Hang in there, brother!!! God is still in charge and answers prayers!!! I said a prayer for you and will keep you in my prayers, my friend!!! May God bless you and give you his peace!!!🙏🙏🙏
@@yahuchanonyakov , , thank you so very much for taking the time to write me and relaying situations, I will take your advice and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
This was the first song I learned on the guitar. It was very difficult, I took a long time passively practicing and 2 years later I still struggle but this song is what inspired me to learn the guitar 🎸
It was one of the first songs i tried to play, i remember chords progression, but not melody, after 20 years when I heard first few notes, I screamed "THIS IS IT" (we played it weird, not like original)
I remember the first time I heard this on the radio. I thought nothing beyond classical could be so beautiful with uplifting emotion…but this…it felt so moving within me. That was nearly fifty years ago. Now that I hear it I still feel what my Eleven year old self felt…only times one thousand. That much intensity can only bring tears. And so it does. Every time I hear it.
I agree. This is my 1st plucking training when I was 10 years old. Once you get the rhythm and pattern, everything will be smooth and you will easily learn every songs with plucking.
Marco brakes everything down in a way ungifted musicians like me can understand. His lessons are very thorough and encouraging. Thank you for all your hard work, Marco!
One of the first finger-picking tunes I learn and still play regularly years later. The challenge in this song for me is the continuous repetition of the pattern, which can definitely tax your picking hand. Still have a hard time completing it without at least one mistake.
I have the habit of resting my pinky as an anchor just below the 'e' while on this song, and by the time I get to the bridge it's almost like it's saying "not a second too soon 🥵".
As with many here, this was one of the first songs I learned. 25 years later and this fingerpicking pattern creeps into most songs I write and play. It's an infectious groove that leads to playing with all 5 fingers of both hands, eventually. Dust In the Wind is so beautiful it draws me in every time. Great lesson, Marco.
the first song that i practice for fingerpicking wayback February 1981. it took me 8 months to learn. no guide, no book, no video, no tutor it was very difficult but i made it.
Love this tutorial. The thumb patterns are a bit simple for ‘traditional Travis’ style, but all great guitarists have used repeating patterns to emphasize the bass line as the song requires. Listen to Chet Atkins or Doyle Dykes for other examples. Another tutorial I’d enjoy would be Horizons by Steve Hackett. I’ve watched him play it live and in video. Still can’t figure out one change…even after 40 years of working on it.
'Dust in the Wind' was the song that inspired me to pick up a guitar, and the first song I learned. It's just 4 basic open chords, C, A minor, G and D minor. I first learned the chord shapes and then to play a simple arpeggio with my thumb. I actually worked out the finger picking while driving one day (no guitar to be found), and to my amazement it worked when I got back home and gave it a try! It's still a great warm-up exercise.
I've been playing this song for many years, but didn't quiet have it correct. This is a great breakdown of the elements. I am re-learning it now. Thanks Marco! Great job!
I appreciated your EKO sound. I have a Rio Bravo that I bought in 1979 in Roma. It was a nice up-grade from the EKO Ranger. It almost looks like new and has excellent sound after all of these years. It seems to be rare; I have only seen a few of them. It has all of the nice inlays. You are a skilled player and quite helpful to others.
Great song!!! A classic from my era!!! Great tutorial, brother!!! Please do "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin sometime. Another classic acoustic song!!! Love your channel!!! Cheers from Lorida, Florida
Brilliant great video there are some licks played in the middle of the song I’m trying to learn them !! Great tune and video cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪 Brian
Beautiful Song, I truly was enjoying your video until 1:06, and I heard the metal buttons on your denim jacket slam into the back of your beautiful acoustic guitar. I just pictured the constant dent being formed.😢 A local music store, would not let anyone play a guitar, if they were wearing coat with buttons, big belt buckle, or chains on wallets or pants. It made 100% sense! A valuable lesson to share. Sorry for the rant. I felt like you should know 😅
The 2nd guitar your hearing might just be tuned to “Nashville” which creates the effect of a twelve string when played along with a standard tuned guitar….but don’t quote me on this…I do know this technique was very common in the recording industry. Thanks for the great lesson on this classic song!
Actually you are correct. Years ago I had a copy of Acoustic Guitar magazine which is now long gone. The issue had an extensive article on Dust In The Wind which explained the 11 layers of guitar in the song including Nashville tuning and other methods like using only the treble strings of a 12 string, doubling certain guitars and such. BTW if you've never heard a young Sungha Jung's arrangement, it's worth checking out.
Useful lesson indeed! It would have been even better if you had incorporated the violin part on guitar so that one could accompany the singer with guitar only! Most omit this important part! 🙏
Corrects Marco, 'the Perfect Fingerpicking Song’…! However, Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) is just as good…and also playable for two guitars. (Michael Marc & Wes Orsolic)
I’ve been trying to make a song and I use Travis picking and I use a different progression but they sound familiar which is why I was worried for secco d
I sure could have used a little better camera work, close up on the picking hand to help us beginners out since that is indeed the the part we new people are learning. But, its a start. Just dont forget we beginners are here too.
Disagree with the Am (as ive always played it) but i saw someone playing 1st and 2nd string on the 1st fret and 3rd string on the 2nd fret. Definitely easier to get to!
I love this song, and I hate it, at the same time. The words and the guitar fit so perfectly, but I strongly disagree with the negative, pessimistic, fatalistic philosophy! So, I play it a lot, but never for others.
Love Dust In The Wind, but despite what Kerry Livgren said, the song is NOT Travis Picking. Listen to Merle Travis, Thom Bresh, Jerry Reed or Richard Smith and you'll hear that Travis Picking is not a repeating pattern, a la the technique in Dust In The Wind. Also, the recording was made with a 12 string guitar, hence the high notes you've arranged as a second guitar.

Agree, if one is a little patient and keep at it, it can be done, even w/o a guitar. Transition is also good for wide harmony.
The chord progression is stirring and haunting.

100% truth. This is the first song I used to learning fingerpicking by myself. Beautiful song and arrangement

Perfect is the word, alright...I like to play this song often for finger picking practice....
You did a good job explaining. Many thanks from BC Canada. Thumbs up & subbed.
Love from India ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Not a guitarist..im more of a keyboardist and yet i have also practiced this song in guitar and this one if my all time favoritea.

This has introduced me to Travis picking thankyou
I heared, the second guitar IS in Nashville tuning, thanks for your great Work!

Mystery unlocked! Good explanation, bro!
One of your best videos. Enjoyed the story of the songs creation.
Come sempre una ottima scelta di canzone e con una certezza di saper spiegare come si fa...Complimenti a te...
What a wonderfull lesson Thanks Marco
After coming across your video I am inspired to relearn it after trying it some years ago... thanks for the history too. Very Nice
Great tutorial Marci. Thank you. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks for helping me with the violin solo part! I hadn't gotten that one! :)
Thanks a lot! Gonna learn it!

Sounds great on that EKO guitar . . .
Wonderful tune! You’ve got to drop a Tab on this please Marco! The details are always in your Tabs. Thank you!
It's a beautiful song to sing.
Nice lesson, thank you. But it was poor blurry example on the hardest part, I had to slow down the video 0.25 for the fingerpicking

This song is the perfect example of Travis Picking DUST IN THE WIND🌬 🤘😎🎸
Love to know what Guitar Pick Up you're using. And the Model of the Guitar. So nice!!
I was at school in Zimbabwe with Giovanni (Johnny) Cirillo in the 60/70's. Any relation by any chance?

I heard that they played the second guitar in Nashville high string tuning
thanks very veryyyy 😍
À fine song and easy
Do you have the tabs for this lesson? Beautiful song thanks for this lesson
I started learning the guitar seven months ago and I'm still struggling with this, well I'm struggling with everything tbf.

Just do a RUclips search for "guitar365." He gives an excellent step by step tutorial of the song.
Best lesson by far is by RUclips “guitar hero to zero”
You won’t regret it
I heard it was played using nashville tuning
So it's thumb at the same time as your finger?
When I hear it i remember final destination 5
You made this song sound much harder to play than it actually is 😂
Never heard the second guitar but then again a can't hear worth a flip!
I like you acoustic guitar what is the model number
厉害厉害厉害了

That's a Dm7, which is also in the song. It doesn't replace the Am.
I closed my eyes and listened,
only for a moment, and the video′s gone....
Vey nice
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I wonder if playing this on a single guitar with 12 strings would work.
Still practicing

Really like to see a take off on Dee ?
Mom I want Paul Davids...But we have Paul Davids at home ... Paul Davids at home :)
You can get the sound of the second guitar by playing it on a 12 string...
"How Kansas... "
If you play the pattern correctly, the alternating bass automatically falls. Into place
It would be much better if the whole song is played with tabs on the screen, now it’s a bit confusing
io la so fare 😎
I don't see how anybody can do all that complicated stuff
The metal buttons on your jean jacket are going to scratch the crap out of the back of that guitar.
It literally hurts to wear jeans jacket with metal buttons and scratches guitar with it. Marco…. Just why??
How could anyone not love this tune? Especially the man who created this masterpiece?
After just watching your Matteo Mancuso video this song's "challenging" finger picking pattern became laughable.
All you are is Dust in Hoffman
Your guitars are so much beautiful and expensive, sir.
Can you gift me 1 guitar from your collection?? 😔
Actually I love guitar so much... 🥰🥰
Bars 1-4 are correct, bars 5-8 are not
Just play already
Why does that band need so many people to make songs
Is it about music or status
(I might be wrong?)
It is a great song and you're playing it wrong.
Don't overanalyze classic American rock and roll songs.
just play..Don't talk too much in music
