THE BEST STINGER VIDEO in RUclips. I must've watched over 10 videos on "how to hit a stinger". It took an Aussie Pro to explain the "tilt, then grip" for the right grip for a stinger shot. No British nor an American Pro had mentioned it. Tips on the other 2 shots are great too.
Hi! Glen, thanks another unique special golf skill lesson for us once-a-week/month golfers. On the punch shots, instead of lowering the grip to be much forward of the ball in order to reduce the loft of the club, why can't we select a less lofted club, e.g. 5 or 6 irons to grip down on the grip/shaft. Wouldn't that work the same?
Hi John, thank you for your query. The advantage to learning how to hit the low shot with the lofted club, is the extra backspin you achieve. A shortened 6-iron will run a long way. However, if you have a bunker or even just som long grass to carry over, you need some more control and spin. Cheers, Glen
Hi Glen, I've changed my 6 and 7 irons for hybrids. I'm 80 yrs old. Can I use them for chipping and punch shots? Maybe a video on this topic is warranted! I am sure there are others out there like me. Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards Bill
Great to hear from you Bill. You can definitely chip with these lofted hybrid clubs, they’re actually very effective around the greens. Hitting punch shots might prove tricky though, as hybrids are designed to launch the golf ball higher. Love the idea of a video on this subject, thank you! 🙏
Thanks for the tips Glen. What are your thoughts on the swinging left release like Ben Hogan as opposed to the conventional arms extended with a roll down the target line? I have read that you get a more penetrating, compressive type flight when you swing left with the body rotation and arms working as one. Your thoughts.
G'day Robert, The low and Left 'Hogan style' body release...I'm a fan! It's a powerful rotary release move that doesn't rely as much on the timing of the hands and the forearm rotation.. Its a nice feeling staying a little passive through impact with a good body turn exiting left. ( This is Steve BTW 😀)
Looks like a stinger is more like a left hip rotation shot. Keeping the hips fast like in baseball but with the weight not falling back, instead slightly on the left leg/hip
Thanks for watching and for your comment. We believe there are many different ways to play any shot. Where Glen has his weight through impact might differ from another effective technique. The keys here are low dynamic loft with a shallow angle of approach to reduce spin. Oh, and of course, plenty of clubhead speed.
Thank you for your question Jerry. Sounds like you’re thinning your irons. Check this out: WHY DO I TOP The GOLF BALL? ruclips.net/video/sWiiUcrANQI/видео.html
Hi? Glen, Special request....some par 3 holes are awkward, 180 meters long. The green is 40m X 40m with cliff or pond in front. We can hit it long as there are usually bunkers or higher slopes at the the back but we weekend golfer can only hit 180 meters max with a driver on a good day with no cross or direct wind. We have to be accurate to land on the green. How do we hit 180 meters long with strong wind blowing directly to our face and land on the green safely. On a windy, the wind is going to knock 10-20meters off our shots at least. That means we'll never make it to the green from the tee. Really fluctuating. Please help! 😂
Thank you for your question John. Unfortunately, this isn’t an instant fix. We definitely encourage you to work on your clubhead speed and the quality of your ballstriking. If you can hit more golf shots from the middle of the clubface, then the wind will have less effect on the flight of the ball. Check out our videos on these two subjects. Good luck!
How has this video only got 626 likes with 40k views...this is the mentality you need...take more club and don't hit it as hard. My philosophy is learn how little you need to hit a club to produce a shot NOT how hard you can hit it :)
As a retired Tour player, I concur. Some of the details for the setup for each shot are a little different to how I play them, but everyone is a little different, all that matters is that one adheres to the fundamentals for each shot, ie; the club reaches the right relative positions to produce the required shot. The stinger was always my favorite, and surprisingly, not that many Tour players actually know how to hit one...
Hey Glenn, Fantastic video on the 3 shots. I think I will struggle to hit the stinger lol, you make it look easy mate. Going to give them a try. Cheers Joe
Thank you Joe. The Stinger is definitely the tougher shot of the 3. Very useful if you play near the coast! Please let us know how you get on. Good luck
Great question Lloyd. My short answer is: No. The problem with choking down on any club is that it feels lighter and stiffer. Also, the grip thickness on most grips will be narrower and the lie angle of the clubhead is different. I might come down the grip a little but definitely wouldn’t choke down much. Thank you for your query.
I like to see a video actually from under the trees looking through an opening, punching it under a limb maybe having to draw it or fade it down the fairway or on to a green. Cheer’s
Adam Pearce you’re right! We were thinking, do we shoot this clip on 12 or 14? Obviously still had 14 in mind. Never noticed the error until one of the boys told me yesterday! Hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers
You didn't mention ANYTHING about the necessity to keep the plane shallow on the follow through, thats why you are hitting it lower. Watch your hands, they start turning around near hip level, and end up lower on the follow through... Missed the chance to explain that, you did it well in the swing, but without telling people that, most won't understand how to replicate
William M. , thank you for your comment. Actually, my plane is shallow for all of my shots, low as well as high. While we recognise, that some golfers attempt to change the plane of their swings to adjust their trajectory, it’s actually not necessary. The golf ball doesn’t ‘know’ or react to swing plane, only impact parameters, e.g. dynamic loft, angle of approach, clubhead speed, etc. Cheers, Glen
Thank you for a very helpful video. I'm starting to game more of these types of shots now (currently off 6) and now I'm inspired to work harder and take on your advice. BTW - I'm sure I'm not the first to notice, but I think your punch shot was into the 12th and while I have birdied it a number of times, it's always been with a 7 or 6 iron, not at 85 yards! From the back you'd need to hit something like 290 to be there - no doubt easy for you but not much chop for me! :-) You have a new subscriber! Cheers and thank you - Dave PS. If you want to see some amazing low faded stingers, check out Zac Radford here (ruclips.net/video/pTagqB9vIDw/видео.html).
G'day Dave! You are a quite correct mate! it is the 12th and We both would have to be downwind to hit our 2nd from 85 yards!! LOL ... We really appreciate your comments and are so glad you subscribed.
Saw Sergio do a clinic at the memorial with Jack on the mic and he demonstrated a cut stinger. Lets just say it was slightly nasty. Jack was pretty amazed.
My only critique on this video is you get longwinded in your explanations. You say the same thing so many times that I just want to see you hit it already. You'd be better off showing the shot a couple more times instead of just continuing to explain the process so much. Maybe if you could put some information on the screen that would save you from feeling the need to tell us so much.
Hi John, thank you for your question. A club with 20º loft will still launch the ball high into the air for many golfers, especially longer hitters. When playing in the wind, it's a great benefit to be able to control your trajectory.
Useless information! He tells you WHAT to do but not HOW to do it. It's like having a title "how to drive it 300 yards" then having a video that says to get some spine tilt and smash it. Oh, and make sure to hit the center of the face!
G'day Jacob, thanks for your comments ( Fairly brutal ....' Useless Information!' ) but any feedback is good feedback so thanks none the less. What we were trying to create on this Video was information on ' How' to play and 'What' to change when playing these 3 different shots... i.e Changing the Club to suit the shot, ball back in our stance, reducing dynamic loft and having a steeper angle of approach into the ball ( Punch shot ). So that we can better deliver information to your liking. What would you like us to do differently in our next Videos? Appreciate you mate...Enjoy your Golf!
@@AussieGolfPros sorry that was a little brutal. I guess what I meant was how do these pieces work? HOW do you swing steeper for a punch shot? Weight left? More wrist action? More above the plane? What are you doing through impact?(rolling the face/trapping it/ handle dragging/reverse rolling)...what angle is your spine? Is it armsy, handsy, body turn? With either of those is there a specific direction to release? Toward the target/left/out to the right? As I mention you were telling WHAT and not HOW. It was ball back, hit it thin, swing steeper. How would be FEELS...feel like you are driving this ball into the ground 6 inches in front if it while you simultaneously roll the face. That's actionable! I could immediately go to the range and try it.
Jacob R the fact is there are many different methods to achieving the desired result, with any shot. Feelings will be unique to a player too. What we strive to do in our videos is demonstrate how the club and the ball react (understanding ball flight laws). Our advice is to get out there and experiment with these shots and find out what feelings you need to achieve each shot type. Good luck and thanks for getting in touch. Glen

Awesome vid. Helped me a lot!!!
Appreciate your feedback Lucas. 🙏
Good information here. The stinger is not as difficult as it seems, set up is key, I find a full shoulder turn helps a lot
