- Undrafted out of the University of Tulsa, Drew Pearson made the Dallas roster as a free agent in 1973 because he could contribute on the Cowboys’ special teams. By the time his career ended 11 seasons and 156 regular-season games later, he had left his mark as the franchise’s all-time leader in most receiving categories and established himself as one of the National Football League’s best clutch performers.
Pearson’s big opportunity came midway through his rookie season when a teammate got injured. Starting six games, he finished with 22 receptions for 388 yards and two touchdowns. He added two TD catches in a postseason win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Quickly becoming the team’s main receiving threat, Pearson led the Cowboys with 62 catches for 1,087 yards in 1974 - the first of four consecutive seasons leading the team in both categories.
Pearson’s 870 receiving yards in his All-Pro season in 1977 led the NFL. He followed that regular season with seven catches for 113 yards in the postseason as the Cowboys won Super Bowl XII, one of his three Super Bowl appearances.
At the time of his retirement, Pearson was the Cowboys’ all-time leader for receptions (489) and receiving yards (7,822). He caught 48 touchdown passes. He was an All-Pro three times, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, and a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1970s.
Statistics alone don’t tell his story, however. It’s the big plays and when he made them that live in NFL lore. Pearson totaled 68 receptions for 1,131 yards (16.6 average) in 22 postseason games. He scored eight times, perhaps no touchdown more memorable than the 50-yard “Hail Mary” throw from Roger Staubach that beat the Minnesota Vikings in the waning seconds of their 1975 divisional playoff game, helping the Cowboys reach Super Bowl X.
Pearson was on the receiving end of three game-deciding plays that NFL Films put on one of its “Top 75 Plays in NFL History” lists, and he also delivered a key block on a fourth play: Tony Dorsett’s NFL record 99-yard TD run.
He was the team’s nominee for the NFL Man of the Year Award in 1980 and was voted into the Dallas Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2011.
“I never doubted my ability. I knew all I needed was a chance to show what I could do. It was a challenge." - Drew Pearson

Drew so happy for you and your family and your legacy rightfully now in the Hall of Fame as one of the greatest receivers of all time! Long overdue.
There should be 500 thousand comments, where are all u cowboy fans , drew was the OG for #88 , better yet he was him and Tony hill and butch Johnson the tandem that when I was 9 that made me a cowboy fan
This was just posted recently Dave they'll show up eventually
Just realized this video even existed 🏈 Cowboys 4 Life
Cowboys fan and Texan here. There are so many outstanding players in Cowboys history. Drew Pearson is top five, hands down. Four decades to get in is unthinkable. There are a few more who should be in and are not. Hope they get their moment as he did.
Roger was, is and will always be a class act.
That's why they named an elementary school after him in Arlen, Texas I-tell-you-what.
I have always admired Drew as a football player, but after watching this video, I admire him more as a human.
For a long time, TOO LONG, Drew Pearson was one of the biggest HOF omissions ever.
Thank God he finally got in while still alive to experience it. Another one who's still waiting is Lester Hayes.
Tony Hill and Harvey Martin too
Drew always look so damn kool under fire I never had any idea he was that emotional until seeing this video the draft pick announcement against all those Eagles fans just like the "Hail Mary" will forever give me chills 🏈 Cowboys 4 Life
Great receiver made clutch catch after clutch catch. He made the number 88 famous for America's Team!!!!
Most people know that life is not easy. Most of us know that life is not fair and most of us adjust and adapt and Mr. Pearson is a prime example of someone that is a survivor. Good man, deserving of the HOF but in my humble opinion his entry was delayed because life is hard and not always fair and Mr. Pearson was patient. Good for him and GOD Bless!!!!
Should have been a first ballot hall of famer he has been Robbed
All of his Life
First of all, I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. But I have always come to admire, and respect Drew Pearson. His story of overcoming the odds and showing the perseverance to push himself is so touching. God bless you, Drew. Well deserving of your enshrinement.
I had the ultimate honor of meeting Drew Pearson in El Paso, Tx while stationed at Fort Bliss, Tx. I was on Staff Duty and I went to Cielo Vista Mall, he was sitting down and as I’m walking up to him extending my hand to shake his hand and I say to him “From one America’s Team to another.” He smile and he told me “make sure you keep winning.” Now he may not remember it, but it’s that I’ll never forget it.
I never understood why it took so damn long to induct Drew Pearson into the Hall of Fame???
I think it was BECAUSE he played for the Cowboys!
Drew was making clutch catches and winning games when today's "stars" where yet to be born.
And he was always ignored!
Why?
I watched Drew Pearson win a Superbowl when I was still a kid in junior high school. He put it all on the field, and never let me down!
Drew was and is among the greatest to ever play the game!
Thank you for the memories Mr. Pearson!
You were the best before we knew what the "best" meant.
I'm so happy for you!❤😊
Pearson was a clutch as "Captain Comeback" Roger Staubach. When the chips were down... You could count on Pearson stepping up, elevating his game, making the plays that had to be made. He dug the Cowboys out of many holes. I have not forgotten the Original number 88 and all the things he did for the Cowboys.. and the NFL. The gratitude of the NFL was long overdue.
"I better go make someone's day today!" ....what wise words from a living legend. It's funny seeing Michael Irvin so humbled in Drew's presence. Very touching doc as expected. I wrote a script about Joe Delaney "Joe #37)...There is an endearing joke involving Drew Pearson in the script, as he was Joe's hero before Joe switched from receiver to running back in college.
I'm more excited for Drew getting his own Football Life Doc than I was hearing him finally get in the HOF. In some ways he may have been more beloved by all fans as the universally known best NFL Player not in the HOF. But this works too. These Football Life docs are so well done. They will make you like a player you hate. I already love Drew. I can't get enough of him in interviews. He is always so funny and true.

Man, Drew really was clutch. He and Roger were the perfect duo. I would love to have one of those Drew Pearson t-shirts from the video. I was lucky to meet him and Roger in Atlanta during a huge sports convention. I was on one end of the convention center when I heard the announcement that Drew and Roger were taking Polaroids with fans…. Clear at the other end of the center. I dropped what I was doing and ran (in a suit and tie) and was lucky enough to get there in time. That photo is a prized possession of mine.
I'll never forget seeing that my grandpa was fucking pissed. He said Drew Pearson been a bad man before any of these kids. That was bullshit how they did him in 2020. Thankfully he got I
Why don't you go back and edit your comnents a little bit and clean up your profanity to where there is none, that way you would sound and write more intelligent.
And I'm a DIE HARD Commanders/Redskins fan and I HATE THE COMWBOYS!!! But i don't hate individuals that are humble and deserving of a lifetime award of such prestige. He deserves it!!
Drew, if you would have played for any other team but the Cowboys, you would have been in the HOF many years ago. There are a lot of Cowboy haters. Congratulations Mr. Clutch.
My first football hero is Drew Pearson.
The fact that Drew Pearson had to wait so long to get inducted is almost criminal.
ALMOST?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
The fact that he got it because he cried and complained is even more criminal…
Exactly!
Nah, there's people not in the hall of fame who need to be. It's how it is
@@ram09568 glad you realize this!
I always look forward to the Football Life shows and as a Cowboys fan I was really looking forward to the Drew Pearson show, thanks for posting!
I felt his pain and I cried like a baby
Drew Pearson. Nothing but pure class.
Okay, to all the Minnesota Vikings fans. "PEARSON DID NOT PUSH OFF!!!!" Nuff said!
About time Drew Pearson got his dews. HOF and his A Football Life episode. The original 88! My early memories of football is number 12 and 11 passing to number 88. Mr. Clutch!!!
Thanks for posting this, been a Cowboys fan my whole life. Mr. Pearson is a special man indeed!
I loved it even more the second viewing. I wasn't sure about the Hail Mary pass interference accusation. I'm convinced, Drew did NOT interfere....it really is the momentum they both had...glad they got a chance to vindicate him.
As a long time Redskin fan, I could not help but like Pearson. Awesome player and a class act.
I lost my little brother and it's like losing half of your soul. I know the pain
My absolute favorite wide receiver
Drew the clutch pearson
The original 88
Bout time he a Hall of famer finally
I often wondered why it took so long to for him to get into the Football Hall of Fame, I truly believe there were judges who were Dallas Cowboys haters, they'll never admit it, "C'mon Man", what else could be!!! THE SARGE
You always have been a hall of famer in the eyes of cowboys fans
Hall of Fame player delivering a Hall of Fame pick years after his career!
WOW @ 20:00 that low life security guard that kicked him must have had some money on the Vikings to win being in their home stadium. Drew showed professionalism and put the team first by not getting up and making a big issue about being assaulted.
holy shit!!!
i just saw that!!!
what the actual fuck?!!?!?!?
life in the 70s was a WHOLE LOTTA different than it is in this world now!!!!
that dude would be jailed for that shit these days!!!!
that would have been the MEME of all time!
"Minnesota guard kicks me in the leg? Time to kick 50,000 Minnesota fans in the nuts."@@davemiller8215
Watching the footage again years later he is amazing, making those catches with two or more defensive backs covering him. Hall Of Fame indeed!
Bravo! Long, Long Overdue, and congratulations to "Mr. Clutch."
love seeing footage from the 70's in good video quality
Drew was the awesome.
This man made me a happy kid growing up. My team was the Cowboys and still is. Thank you Drew.
I ain’t realize how good he was
Love the swag as well
Where is the football mr.pearson threw it to the stands.that Ball should be in the Hall of fame.
Let's talk about the Security Guard clicking Pearson at the end of that catch. Geesh!
I just watched this episode. I was a Cowboy fan back then. Drew is a great player and man. His HOF induction was long past due. Him talking about his accident was very emotional. Made my eyes leak.
I'm glad ur a Hall of famer drew person and a great man I'm sry ur suffering depression ur still a hero to me
The mutual respect and love between Roger and Pearson radiates off the screen.
This man broke my heart as a Falcon fan when I was 12 years old, on a cold winter evening back in 1980. And over 40 years later I'm happy to see Drew Pearson has finally taken his rightful place in Canton.
Thanks for posting, sir. This was a tear- jerker for me. Drew was my childhood idol. I had his poster hanging on my wall as kid. Still vividly remember the wreck that ended his career and took his brother. Only one number 88 to me, forever. I was so happy for Drew when the long-overdue Hall call came.
You was a big part of my childhood
Drew im 60 remember all cowboy games u played mr clutch
Drew has always been a HOF since I first started watching football in the 1976 season. He was always one of the best WRs, so I can't comprehend why it took so long to make it official.
Ever since the video of this dude crying over not getting in to the hof went viral… he’s gotten that and so much more. It did wonders for him even if it did cost him his reputation.
I love seeing wide receivers from this period. Catching balls without gloves. You never see that today.
Really good editing…@nfl …Drew was iconic…that’s catch against Minnesota was so huge…remember it like yesterday
Thanks Drew!
Thank you for this very uplifting history, it brought tears to my eyes, congrats Drew
Love Brother Drew!
If you watch long offensive plays by the Cowboys in the 70's and 80's, you'll often see #88 blocking down field. All around player.
Who’s that security guard that kicks Drew Pearson???
Pearson was such a smooth receiver. Loved watching him play
I love it ❤
I kind of like those 70's Cowboy's pants.
I am happy for Drew Pearson the NJ native. just like me.
Love ya Drew- GO RAMS!!
Best football life ever. The real 88!
Excellent
As he recovered in the Hospital drew was in and out of consciousness (I heard)....he said when he awaoke he saw 3 faces every time. Roger Staubach, Harvey Martin and Tom Landry.
FINALLY! he got in... YEAH!
Now they have to get Charlie Waters in, and that'll take care of the two Cowboys that I had the upmost respect for.
And I was a Forty Niner Faithful (1970-2014) but no longer watch present day NFL games.
OMG..
Dude played Qb 😮
Never knew!
#AwsomeSauce
It's so sad about the car accident. That will forever stay with him and that he will take the blame for drinking that allowed the car accident that killed his brother. You can see hm relive the moments especially the painful ones all over again.
The that Drew, was a member of the ALL DECADE TEAM OF THE 70'S. And waited 38 years to get in. Every person that had a vote it should have been taken away. PERIOD
I had no idea he had been inducted into the Hall of Fame until watching this video.
What always bothered me about Drew not being inducted into the Hall quicker is knowing what caliber of player he was compared to more modern players that made it in ahead of him. There are fantastic players who were inducted into the HoF that were NOT the big game impact player that Drew was. Those players were definitely good players, but Drew was a game breaker who was as clutch as someone like Lynn Swann who played during Drew's era. In his era, Drew was as good as it gets.
Whoever that police officer that kicked DP shame on you 😡 it was at the time on the video at 20:04.
21:47 and 20:26 the ball looks like it might have partially deflected horizontally also off Minnesota defender #43 Nathan Wright’s outstretched lower leg. This explains how the ball bounces quickly into Drew Pearson’s hip, despite being thrown from almost 60 yards away. Drew even says right here at 22:53 after the game that it was a “lucky” catch. However it looks like Drew made the adjustment by moving his right arm backward, anticipating the ball might deflect towards him, so really it was a very skilled catch based on flexibility , and not “lucky”.
I've always thought the same thing. If you look closely enough, the ball appears to deflect off Wright's ankle or lower leg, judging from the odd angle the ball seemed to take into Pearson's hands.
My guess is Randy White as the teammate that convinced him to get the tattoos. Randy himself is inked up pretty good.
How can you NOT like Catholic Boy Roger and Baptist Boy Drew .... I love our country.
Damn... the end was so hard to watch..
THE FACT THAT JOE THEISMANN WAS HIS HIGH SCHOOL QUATERBACK WAS MIND BLOWING.
WHAT A GREAT STORY.
Drew Pearson Wide Receiver Dallas Cowboys From 1973 To 1983 Before Michael Irvin Number 88
21:15 Look how Vikings Al Pro safety Krause plays the end of this pass. He's sitting back looking for the tip drill interception instead of aggressively pursuing the receiver.
My Birthday is March 22nd Wow!
WTF!!! Did that security guard kick him?
Damn this probably why "PlayMaker" probably wore #88
My first and last jersey.
The Pat Benatar of pro football.
Drew was great, hated him because I'm a Redskins/Commanders fan but he was a tough SOB who would catch anything thrown to him.
At least it didn't take until death like Ken Stable and Cliff Branch to get into the hall.
IF any of you Pacer Alumni saw me Play Wide Receiver for The Almighty Grant Pacers THIS👇🏿is who I got my EVERYTHING from! He’s why I chose to wear #88 from the Rio Linda Falcons to The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks! Why & How I was Meticulous about my uniform being perfectly placed on my body! My socks, 🧦 Spat Cleats, 👟 Tight taped pants like jeans, 👖Extra long wristbands, and gloves 🧤 that always matched uniforms! I WAS HIM until I became a PACER then I had enough confidence in my abilities to be ME! Emulating Drew Pearson was why I Myself was CLUTCH on all 3rd & 4th downs in the game of life, success on the field and a Degree 📜 off it!! Thanks Mr Clutch you AND Todd Williams / Freeman Williams got football life on a path to success 🙌🏿 ⭐️ 🐎 🪓
We hated Drew so much,he was that good
20:02 Ive watched other angles of this security guard. He is actually "shoe-ing" the fan who landed on top of Drew Pearson. He's jesturing with his foot to the police chief closer to Drew for the fan to get off Drew Pearson. The the police chief can then be seen getting in a tussle with the fan.
23:51
Ditka sighting
You know this guy had great numbers before they changed the rules for a pass happy NFL plus he had a 1,000 yard back many years todays WR dont
Wonder what Golden Richard's said to him?
Criminal how long it took him to get in the HF
Even more criminal that he only got in because he put out a video of him crying and complaining… it’s not a coincidence that he got in a year after that… he got in the hof, but it cost him his reputation…
.053 That's the first time i heard of somebody actually being under .08
Did you hear that line from Rick Gosselin? Drew played when defenses were allowed to play defense which is why I won't accept Brady as the goat because he has no career in Pearsons era 🇺🇲💙🇺🇲
Did that security guard kick him, wth?
Woow...The burden of having your brother's death on your shoulders must be an unbearable one...for a lifetime. So sad!
Security guard kicks Drew Person in the ribs at 20:00.
