Whodini was one of my favorite rap groups of all time and their music was a mixture of R&B, funk, and hip-hop blended together. Sadly, they didn't get the notoriety they deserved. Five Minutes of Funk, One Love, Friends, Escape, and The Freaks Come Out At Night were a cut above the rest!
They were mature and sophisticated like a R&B group.

I attended the Fresh Fest in 1985 in Chicago at the UIC Pavilion. I remember they had two stages. My Godmother was a radio personality at the time for WJPC radio station (Jet Magazine Publishing Company) in Chicago and she gave me and her kids tickets.

This makes me so happy!!! Whodini is one of my favorite rap duos besides Outkast, UGK and Run DMC. I still listen to my favorite jams One Love, Friends, Freaks Come Out At Night, Big Mouth, Escape and Be Yourself featuring Millie Jackson. I’m not sure what Jalil was smoking to think he is the sole owner of the name unless he came up with the name and trademarked it. Even more stupid to me was Johnny Gill trying to claim the New Edition name when he isn’t a founding or original member. He would have to run that by Bobby, Ricky and Mike. Ecstasy’s death really shocked me and hurt. They definitely were Hip Hops first sex symbols. No other group had a trio of fine ass talented brothers……RIP Ecstasy

Man i was blessed to see this group during their Fresh Fest Tour in springfield Massachusetts they turned the place out they all was off the chain. They lifted Grand Master Dee up off his feet and he was still cutting them records.

Real Talk... I used to see Ecstacy at the LA Fitness in Metro Atlanta off of Camp Creek Pkwy. He was an avid jogger. After his workout, he and a few of the guys from the gym would go jogging in the Hot Atlanta Heat.... Rest In Heavenly Peace !!! One of my favorite Hip-hop groups of all-time...

I'm sitting here literally STUNNED by the fact that this is the SAME John that me and my girls used to hang out with in Atlanta, GA, along with some of our other friends!! This was years after the group has pretty much stopped performing., of course. But I remember when he passed and how hard it hit me. RIH John "Ecstasy" Fletcher!

Unforgettable MC. I met Ecstasy in the early 90s when the "Bag o' Trix" album was going to drop. He gave me the cassette single for "Freaks." Cool dude. I was blessed to see Whodini perform twice (with Grandmaster Dee. IJS). No one could wreck a stage like Whodini. Rest in Peace, Ecstasy.

I found out about what happened to him on the 50 years of hip hop documentary. Very sad and this group is underrated for real and they had an impact on hip hop when hip hop was in its infancy. They were also pioneers. It was disappointing to find out they didn’t have a good record deal and their record label did shady things. Smh! Thank you for following up with this episode with much more detailed information. I had no idea that he was an identical twin. RIP Ecstasy.

Houdini was definitely underrated. They had style the lyrics. Great story teller, awesome lyrics and something you can dance to the 808 beat is the bomb No Doubt Houdini was trailblazers and the hip-hop community. They deserve all the credit just like run DMC Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick , LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys💯💕☺️
What you said about Whodini putting fashion into hip-hop is true before them artists either dressed like Bambaata ie. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 which was influenced by George Clinton etc or whatever clothes you already had which was jeans and sneakers maybe a Sweatshirt with your name on it a Bomber jacket Run DMC-ish Whodini was 5th Avenue style which was different and made them stand out..
I met Ecstasy at Ross's in Fayetteville, Georgia 5 years ago and just to be respectful, I waited until after he got off the phone and said " You look like the guy from Whodini" and he replied " Im him" and he asked my name & then we gave me fist and that was my last image of him and then I found out at work that he died. I really hope that Jermaine dupri or somebody from jive records funded his funeral because the family needed money for his memorial because I saw it in an email. I saw them at the Flashback Fest 14 YEARS AGO and that snake dance they did in unison was the BEST that I've seen in a snake dance routine since the Soul Train era when I was coming up back in the day.

Because they Were 💯💯. For a decades many thought another popular hip hop group was the first but they were NOT, Whodini was the First. Jalil has been making it known for years and especially more so in recent years. I remember listening to them in my dad’s Walkman back in the 80’s, I’m glad they received their flowers by the HIP HOP HONORS on VH1, WYCKOFF GARDENS along with GOWANUS was put on the map due to them‼️

Whodini is THE FIRST PLATINUM Hip hop group ever. Russell simmons attempted to down play those sales for RunDmc. Their Album released almost 2 years before Run Dmc massive album. Our parents wouldnt mind Whodini. They loved the message in their music besides the few freaky songs.
His voice style was untouched, unique Emcee John Ecstasy Fletcher and Whodini!
