    The Thrase was actually coined by a DJ and writer for Blues and Soul magazine called Dave Go in order.
    He referred to "The soul of the North" after clubs like The Wigan Casino, The Twisted Wheel etc started doing their all-nighters.
    The soul of the north got shortened to "Northern Soul", and that thrase stuck.
    That never went unnoticed by the artists who made that music, who got more appreciation here in the UK than they ever got in the States.
    It is still a miracle how they managed it, baring in mind the US radio stations at the time wouldn't play " Black" music, and the BBC thought we should all be dancing to the Osmond's. (Sorry Donny, I know you are a big soul fan yourself, but your music just doesn't do it for me!)
    A big THANK YOU to Messrs Godin, Levine, Roberts, Searling and others for making our lives bearable!

      David Gordin coined the phrase Northern Soul. When he noticed northern football fans were buying rare sixties US soul at his shop Soul City in Covent Garden

    I'm from Manchester in England and there it isn't just a big deal with whites and blacks mixing in clubs, and dancing to white or black DJs. Never really has been. I know there's a different back story in the U.S.A though. I'm sure you'll agree that if a piece of music's great, it is good if as many people as possible hear it. In regard to the phrase "northern soul", funnily enough, it seems to come from the U.S.A. or even northern England, but London record shop DJs.

      The CIVIL RIGHTS ERA was a tumultuous time! There was a lot of segregation, this is where this R&B SOUL emanated from!

    Damn you spell check! I corrected that 3 times before I posted that msg, yet it still managed to change it.
    It should have read "Dave Godin", not " Dave go in order"

    How come tunes like these never appear on Northern compilations? They just tend to regurgitate the same type of things instead...

    • @barvas42
      @barvas42  7 лет назад +2

      they tend to go with what the uninitiated think they would like to listen to if they were going to listen to northern,,standered stuff that you sometimes even hear on the radio,,,,shock...anyway hope you enjoyed.

      You are correct - many good tunes do not get heard yet a few become back-drops to TV adverts. KOKO, you post wonderful stuff. KTF.

      There are some great comps out there - The Millionaire series springs to mind, the All niter series and a lot of the Kent stuff has quality tunes on. But yes there are quite a few that play same old same old.
