    Hundreds of gnats this year because I forgot to use hot water to kill the eggs and larvae and I overwatered. 😂 We got sticky yellow traps too.

    Love these suggestions. I'd been wondering where to get the sticky traps. Also, when you sterilize the soil with the water, do you wait for it to dry and then put it in a bag or use it right away?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 месяца назад +2

      Yes, wait until it's cool and you can plant in it, OR, wait until it's dry before you bag it and store.
      Glad to hear it was helpful. Thank you for watching and following along. CK

      Perfect timing! My SEED boxes have all kinds of fungas gnats, I thought I sterilized the soil. I have those self wick/watering seed trays which makes it humid. I wonder if that effects breeding. I topped it with sand but it's play sand. I need insecticidal soap & course sand!

    Fungus gnats are in my pots outside. That insecticidal soap smells horrible i wouldn't use that inside, take your plants outside or in garage to treat, then after a few hours bring them in.

    I have been trying neem oil relentlessly, as well as sticky traps and coarse sand. I am about to finally switch out allll the soil - hoping this video will help ensure all is gone and aid in prevention! I’m dealing with this in my overwintered nightshades, as well as some nearby houseplants. They are all contained in the same room, but it’s sorta preventing me from starting other seedlings currently. Wish me luck! 🤞🍀 Thank you, CaliKim! 😸

    The problem with vermiculite or sand is that you can't see the surface of the dirt and it is difficult to tell when it needs watering Ive tried the boiling water over the dirt and still got em. I use peroxide and water mix and it helps quite a bit but why use the little butterfly stickies? I use the big regular size mouse trap sticky boards. They take up more room but I catch 10x more of the gnats for me. I'd post a pict but not sure how. Just do it.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 месяца назад +1

      They are per snickety, that is for sure. A few suggestions on not being able to see the surface of the dirt-how to tell when wet.
      1) My favorite that I suggest: Bottom water. The water goes up...the bottom dries up...you know, it's time to add water.
      2) Buy a simple moisture meter
      3) Use light colored materials!
      Great comment, Stephen!!! CK

    Perfect timing! I am growing from seed for the first time, and I am afraid that my soil is too wet from my initial watering, plus the humidity dome on top. There is a slight gap between my dome and the tray, and sure enough, I saw an adult gnat fluttering around. I got out my yellow sticky trap, but I don't know if I got it in time to prevent eggs from being laid. When you start from seed, aren't you supposed to wet the soil before planting? That is what I did. Then I put the dome on and it got very steamy because I also have a heat mat for the tomato and pepper seeds. Are you supposed to take the dome off and air it out?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 месяца назад +2

      Yes, it's moistening the soil is good; this ensures that the growing medium is evenly damp and creates a favorable environment for seed germination.
      As far as the dome goes, correct, as well,it's a good idea to gradually acclimate seedlings to lower humidity and provide ventilation by removing the dome once the seeds have germinated.
      The dome creates a controlled and humid environment, but it's important to transition seedlings to more typical growing conditions as they become established.
      Great job, you are on the right track! Well done! CK

    How can you let the first few inches or even one inch dry out when you have brand new seed in there. You are not supposed let seeds dry out. Most of the seeds are tiny and get planted at or near the surface.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 месяца назад +1

      Hi VicFric, this is generally speaking, adjust according to the size of your seeding. I usually mist my seed cells until they germinate, then start bottom watering. The idea is you don't want your soil waterlogged, prime breeding ground for fungus gnats. Good luck keeping those pesky insects away!
