One of the darkest, yet most underrated villains in Disney.
Hopper was a sociopathic thug in grasshopper skin who doesn't care who crosses his path from a young girl to a elderly woman to hell even his own henchmen who he kills just to make a point.
Basically like The Godfather right?
Hopper was more of a bully than a leader. He wanted control and the reason he kept the ants in control because he didn't want to go get the food for himself. He wanted someone else to do for him.
His death was also ironic, he wanted food and at the end he became food for the birds and got eaten.
Exactly, and like most bullies, he is a complete and total coward. The second he faces someone he can't beat, he's screwed.

I see this villain as a cautionary tale to what happens when you give a tyrant too much power. He's the definition of security over freedom.

Hoppers power only extended as far as it did because the ants didn’t realize they outnumber the pest. He learned the hard way what happens when they figure that out and they were fed up with his BS.
To be fair, he WAS aware of the ants’ numerical advantage and wanted to prevent them from realizing it. He just took the wrong approach in handling it.

How to make a bunch of grasshoppers a mafia. That’s what this video should have been called.
You let one stand up, then they might stand up. Those puny little ants outnumber us a hundred to one, and if they ever figure that out, there goes our way of life. It’s not about the food, it’s about keeping those ants in line. And that is why we’re going back. Would anyone else like to stay?
That speech sums up Hopper perfectly.
I find I begin to truly understand the mind of a villain the moment I begin to understand the mind of someone who calls me one.
An Ant colony, vs a few grass hoppers. The ants wouldn’t just destroy him, they would eat him alive… scince.
Hopper and the whole movie are underrated.
You're wrong, Hopper. Ants are not meant to serve grasshopper. I've seen these ants do great things, and year after year they somehow manage to pick food for themselves and you. So who is the weaker species? Ants don't serve grasshoppers! It's you who need us! We're a lot stronger than you say we are. And you know it, don't you?

Good thing the writers wouldn't include the likes of me in this movie as a main character, 'cause if they did, I'd taunt Hopper SO MUCH before crushing him with my hand (or foot)
Fear is power. And it’s the main tool of how selfish people get control over others.
Wouldn't be surprised if Hopper's near-death encounter with the bird is what led him down his path if he wasn't on it already. Nothing like escaping from the maw of your greatest natural predator to fuel a need for power and control. While he is most definitely the villain what I find ironic is that the only reason any real conflict in the movie happens is because of Flik not Hopper lol. Flik's recklessness turned Hopper from offscreen mob boss to main antagonist.
What always made Hopper menacing and fascinating for me is that, despite being a bully and a tyrant, he is VERY good with words and using them to present himself as a reasonable and "compassionate insect" to the ants and his own gang, even as he threatens them.

I like to think that Hopper was inspired by Brad Weasley from Road House.
