The main reason was ‘Coronation Street’ and the increasing number of episodes being filmed for broadcast each week. When the theme park opened in 1988, Corrie only went out 3 times per week. This only required one days shooting (Mondays) on the lot for exterior street scenes. So, for the other days when the set wan’t in use, it was available to the park Tuesday to Sunday. So, with the increase in filming capacity, not only was the exterior set in need of expansion to create more filming locations. Baker Street on the theme park was demolished and replaced with Victoria Street, onto the expanded set, bringing Roy’s Rolls, Prima Donner and Elliott’s Butchers onto the permanent lot for the first time. They also needed more lot shooting days, which was increasingly making the set unavailable to the public, or when pick ups were needed, for example, they’d film scenes with theme park guests on the set, which from a production stand point was less than ideal. As the ‘Coronation Street’ set was the star attraction to the theme park, not having it available when needed made the rest of the theme park untenable.
