They are the minorities who live in the mountain since the old days. They refuse to move to the town areas and their mindsets are very hard to change.
The China government tries to help them as much as possible. Special committees are setted up to tackle their problems. Doctors and social workers are appointed to visit them on regular basis.

If watch other documentaries on this they consider themselves impoverished. They don't get enough nutrients or protein because it is nearly impossible for them trade. They don't have beds, good clothes, hot water, heater during the winter, stoves ( they heat things over a small fire pit). Their children cannot go to school if it is snowy, windy, or rainy because it is to dangerous for them to travel on the ladder. Also, incest is rampant within their community because it only has around 75 villagers. With most of them never leaving because they are not equipped to earn an income outside of what skills they learn in their village. It is a very hard life and they have expressed in other interviews that they want it to be better. No person deserves to be on the verge of starving, miss out on essential nutrients for the body, etc. Their lives are extremely hard and if they could change it they would.

Yuanliang Meng Cambridge University did a genome study on the Nagas. The study found that we were zero percent related to the Indians. Two groups can be only zero percent related, if only there were no contact between them for at least a thousand years. Hence, we were never Indians nor a part of India. We were forcefully occupied by expansionist India. We are still kept under arm force act. Which means an Indian army can arrest us, kill us, rape or do anything without any evidence or proof and the deeds of the army will not be held accountable in the court of law. We have no human rights. What is interesting is that our genes were closest to han community. We had 60% match. Our folklore says that we move south from China during the construction of the great wall of China.

I wonder how they originally had the weird idea to put a village in such an inaccessible place. It makes very few sense, even if the soil was very fertile, because it couldn't compensate the very hard difficulty to get anywhere from there. How did they get supplies or sell their products?
However, there is something called "winding", to slowly gain elevation and get in those inaccessible places, building such a steep ladder in a straightful line isn't necessarily the smarter engineering solution.
