Thank you! Repairing an old violin I found at a garage sale. It was in pieces and cracked in many places. A throw away I was told. I wanted to try and repair it. Your videos are so well appreciated! She is slowly coming back to life. Though will never be as new. She will be mine though, if she plays;)
You Sir, are awesome. I've been mesmerized by all your videos. I wish we were neighbors! Thank you for passing along your skill and knowledge to us in such a mild, humble way.
I like your honesty, As i don't see myself traveling to Japan anytime soon, i'll watch your video's instead. lol thankyou for the information and time.
This is good information to know, thank you for your time sir. :) I recently found an old violin and have been trying to repair it- and hope to learn to play now that my wrist is healed from a sports injury. But one question I have is that I have been hearing that alcohol based varnish is more risky to use than oil-based, as it could effect the sound of the instrument in the long-run. Is this true?
There is a different direction here in America, they don't like to mess around with the finish of instruments.. it's kinda odd. And there is a lot of misinformation about how the sound is affected by the finish!.. when most appraisals are not done off of sound at all ,it's who when and where the violin or instrument is made..
Ive heard that cheap varnish makes violin plate resist to vibrate. Would sanding cheap violin like Stentor Standard and applying some better varnish make it sound nicer or there will be not much difference and its not worth it?
When retouching varnish, please advise any varnish is acceptable in case color is what I wanted. secondly, varnishing is fine without removing strings.
My violin is applied oil varnish. Any problem with it if the touch up using alcohol varnish? Is it the normal practice to use alcohol varnish as touch up? Thanks
I noticed two things. You did not remove the strings to work on it. Also behind the neck looks like it has no stain or varnish. Is that how it is supposed to be?
It is tradition that neck should not have varnish, primer only. Second, it is small repair, if he had removed strings, he would have do setup of bridge and strings again (more unnecessary work).
that is an assassin, but he became mesmerized in his work and now gave up life of murder for violin repair, of course this didn't sit well with the syndicate...
Violins are not for look...some of the best sounding violins are ugly... look at the Guarneri violins- they are ugly. But they worth 10 to 30 millions...who care if there’s some imperfections on the vanish ? In fact most modern violins varnishes are imitating the old looking violins...
Is this a joke? No actual information is conveyed in this video. Color: "you must study" Type: "only spirit...but match original" All the actual work is done off camera. Ridiculous

Hello! Is the clear varnish high gloss or satin?
You skipped over the "color" step. You went from "white" to "color" without showing us how to color it.
Great video! Much to learn from this. Thank you!

Very well explained.Great finish.
I wonder what made you start mending violins in first place?
What song is playing in the background?
You are so very magnificent! I don't have adequate words to articulate my gratitude to you, but many thanks to you for sharing your expertise with us.
What abrasive grit sand paper do you use to wet sand? Is that mineral oil and pumice? Followed by mineral oil and rotten stone to polish?
My violin is applied oil varnish. Any problem with it if the touch up using alcohol varnish? Is it the normal practice to use alcohol varnish as touch up? Thanks
Use the same varnish to do touch up.
The music is beautiful in the background.
I also love solo Rock of Ages
thanks you

Hi, you are inspiration for me, I will buy a cheap and old violin then I will practice, thanks
Missed audio on Day 3
youre so great sir.
I used tea for a little scrimp on my violin... was bad idea do you think?
you can use anything as far as it match the original varnish
Now I understand why there is not varnish on the neck.
WHAT PAINT DID YOU USE TO COLOR IT?
Mark Lozano First of all I hope no one is painting a violin. That would completely obliterate the sound. Its varnish lol
Hi Daniel, was the original finish Oil Varnish?
this violin is complicated vanish.
