Okay so, I was a victim of the Nintendo x Sega war, and my whole family leaned hard for Nintendo. So, no Sega content was allowed in the house. (Not that we had any of their consoles to begin with). It was stupid and as I kid I took it WAAAY too seriously. Till one day Ma brought home “Billy Hatcher” and I read “Sega” on the front and was in shock. Of course at that point the competition was winding down a lot, but child me had zero clue about it. To me, Billy Hatcher was a forbidden snack mistakenly handed to me. And when I played it, I LOVED it. I loved the music, the style, the characters, overall a wonderful game. Then I realized “Wait, Sonic’s in this game?” and constantly felt guilt when I’d play with those characters. Pretty soon after that, mom brought home Sonic Underground, which I fell absolutely in love with. Though it got canned, it opened me up to have a large interest in Sonic dispite never even trying to play a game. Then one day, I found myself at a McDonalds playground, where this big arcade box was just installed with an old Sonic game on it (not too sure what one) but it was twice as big as the other ones the place had. If I recall, it was only 25 cents to play and so I did. Spent all my money my ma gave me playing it. All while I kept peeking around the machine to see if anyone saw my horrible sinful act of playing a game intended for people my age. Regardless, didn’t reconnect with my adoration of Sonic till I ran into gameplay of Sonic Adventure 2, and I was shook. Though my admiration for Sonic was never acted on till my now BF brought in a game for me to try. I loved it, now I has since consumed my life. Though Underground Sonic was my first Sonic, and my first game was Classic, I will always see modern sonic as MY Sonic. But I’m 26 and grew up with everything modern sonic was as beyond cool, so I think I naturally fell for him a lot more then classic.

Broke my heart when I realized it didn’t do so well and likely wouldn’t ever get a sequel. Though, in recent years the director for Billy Hatcher has spoken on wanting to make a follow up for the game. Still does every so often, though most of his content is obviously Sonic based for obvious reasons. Can’t wait to se that vid, whenever you get around to making it. ^^
Sonic x to sonic and the black knight was my favorite balance of his personality. When doing things on his own he was pretty serious and chill, but still carefree and adventurous when he wanted to be. If he was focused on a mission or running around by himself, he was pretty similar to his original genesis depiction personality wise. Then when he was around others it seemed to energize him and bring out more of his goofiness. All sides of him had their moments to shine when the moments called for it. He also definitely had a lot of his own drive to do things which feels missing in later games. It feels more realistic to me than always serious, always goofy, etc. and it helps that I enjoyed the writing, cutscenes, and voice acting of that era the most as well.
My absolute favorite is Riders Sonic, not just as a character, but the setting itself. It's like an alternative world where the events of prior games take place in the far future. It's like a future funk utopia, where nature and technology can perfectly co-exist. It's like those Y2K adverts where everything is chrome and shiny and new.
Man I kinda vibe with that. I played Sonic Riders a lot with my friend when I was younger and I know what you mean. That Sonic (and the world as a whole) scratched an itch that I don't think any other Sonic game has.
I like this new series, Core of a Character sounds like a fascinating exploratory subject. Sonic reminds me of Spiderman in that any iteration can vary wildly while still being instinctually recognizable as The Character. It seems like whichever version of their story that is being told is a more of a vessel for social/cultural trends of the time and can reflect broader storytelling trends that could be connected to all other forms of media! I love seeing stories (games, movies, books, literally anything) put into the context of the creators' lived reality. The themes that get incorporated are being fed by their day-to-day experiences, hopes, dreams, fears...it's really cool to get a 'zoomed out' view of what may have pushed certain ideas into their works.
Sonic has always been with me. My whole Life. I always loved him and will probably never stop. And my absolute favourite Version is the Jason Griffith one. Especially in Black Knight and Unleashed. Without Sonic I wouldn't be where I am today

He was super energetic, confident, sometimes overconfident, grew from his overconfidence, was really funny without making too many overt jokes, and was EXTREMELY cool and hopeful with how he interacted with the other characters in the game. There's something to be said for a character from franchise that hasn't had a successful game in over a decade (with Frontiers breaking the trend) that still manages to be popular. Sonic's just cool, that's all there is to it, it's never just been about the games, Sonic is an iconic character that you can put in just about anything, most of the other media surrounding Sonic is more interesting than the games, I think that's why he has one of the most dedicated and passionate fanbases ever; he's just a versatile, memorable character. I think the Sonic that always comes to mind for me is the one from Sonic Adventure 2, it was my first Sonic game, and games that I played when I was younger were always special to me, because I always played them with my family, in fact, my dad, my sister and I spent so much time playing the game's two player mode so much, as bare bones as it is, that it took us months to actually get through the story. My youngest niece is actually into Sonic now, she'll ask me to play Sonic with her whenever she comes over, and she knows I do voices, so she'll ask me to talk like Sonic and Shadow while we run around my yard with our arms out like idiots for hours. Then we'll come in from playing, and she still insists I talk like Shadow the rest of the night, so my sister and I will be cooking dinner while I prepare food and read off the recipe in the edgiest, breathiest voice I can muster. Sa2 was such a fun game for me growing up, It's so nice that I can relive a part of my childhood and be able to share these fun moments with my niece, and I guess in a weird way, I have Sonic to thank for it.
Y'see, these are the kinds of videos regarding Sonic's character that I actually like; the one that welcomes appreciation for all Sonics, and not the kind where one Sonic is propped up to bring down another. It's okay to have your own opinions on what Sonic works best for you, lord knows I do, but by keeping an open mind and acknowledging that all of them are the real Sonic, I'd say the fanbase would be much better off than it is now. I think the one thing that stays consistent is why he does, what he does, perhaps even when he didn't have words to state it, he was still doing it. Its his heart and fact that he does genuinely care about the world and those who inhabit it. Dude's been running his little legs out from day one to ensure that. And I think there's a certain level of nobleness to that. kind of ironic that people consider. Sonic and the black knight to be the best depiction. Dudes known who he is from day one.
I think you really did capture the versatility and adaptability of Sonic as a character. I do have to say though, I view Sonic as being pure CD style in looks and personality while saving the day, but is super cute when just relaxing and not being the (light) blue robot destroying badass, and is always very dedicated and caring (stopping him from just blitzing through everywhere with a sonic boom strong enough to destroy everything in his wake). Tails I imagine as the one doing the jokes and being cute most of the time, but still also really cool when he needs to, as I hate the idea of Tails just being a victim until Sonic shows up, and then being just an add-on.
I like the classic sonic from sonic cd specifically. Not mute, just silent, his actions speak for him. It's as good as a balance you can get with badass and cute.
My favorite version of Sonic is for sure his game's version (in all of the games, I think he's a pretty consistent and well developed character) and game inspired versions (like Sonic from the IDW Comics, or Sonic from Sonic X, Sonic from the Sonic OVA, etc.), even if, as you said, we have a spectrum from totally cool to totally goofy/cute, I think all those interpretations, no matter in which side of the spectrum they're in, if they have the traits from the Sonic from the games, being consistent with him, being correct with who that original Sonic is, they're my favorites For me, Sonic is a cool guy who loves adventures, loves to meet new places, loves to explore around the planet, chill out, relax, support those oppressed who can't defend themselves, being playful, cocky and sassy while fighting and saving the world, is cute without even trying to be, but that's just natural of him, throws in some jokes sometimes, especially to mock those he fights against and even friends depending on his relationship with them, like he does with Knuckles, heads into a competition when it's about racing, loves running, loves freedom, loves being the fastest thing alive, the world's supersonic fastest hedgehog, for me, that's the best Sonic to ever exist and that's the coolest guy I know And just by saying that, I see how even in the games, even in 2 games from the same era, he has confliting traits, but somehow they still work togheter! But that's what I think when I hear "Sonic", the coolest, cutest, fastest hedgehog on earth!

Sonic was just cool as a kid; snarky, strong, heroic. When I think of Sonic my mind goes to the American Sonic box art version but also the American original cartoon. Close second is the old Sonic anime OVA.
Sonic is really inspiring character. His inconsistent nature is so what therapeutic. It kinda works like religion would work - everyone has ther own version of God in ther head. (sonic.exe reference oh no) The fact that even Sega can't define Sonic is great as well. Is he an alien? A spirt? A mobian? Just an animal? He is just the thing - the fastest thing alive and that is one constant thing about him. His fear of water as well! And love for chilldogs too! I think the whole theme of Sonic being such inconsistent and free character is really the core of him. The core that Genesis era allowed because it he WAS consistent at first. The classic era. Kinda he had different version in Usa and Japan and Europe as well. But then Modern. He evolved not only from 2D to 3D but he got those dimensions as character as well! I think that's really cool that he allows for this creativity only because the core is so strong. And because he is so inspiring is hard to not do own versions. I even have mine that I try to do Visual Novel about (since I'm artist and freak about mental health) and just doing my best. For now is really early but I'm just patent taking my time and wondering if anyone would like to experience this version of him... And his friends! Anyway be creative guys. Express yourself with confidence and kindnesses! That's my advice for your life random person who read this whole comment.
This video (and the conclusion) is interesting. I wonder if it would be practical to make a Sonic game which works like that "Mario 64 beta had AI which personalises the game depending on how you play" meme? Something like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories could work even if it would be more limited.
that was a great video! i always felt there was never a true objective sonic in terms of personality, most people look to black knight for the objectively perfect sonic but then people also disagree, showing that maybe not everyone see that sonic as the best sonic i think that while there isnt a personality set in stone for the guy, i can appreciate how many different iterations there are of him because it allows different versions to stick with people
Sonic the Hedgehog on the 6-pak for Sega Genesis was my 1st introduction to him as a Kid. I like the cartoons too but don't really have an opinion on the modern versions.

It could be nice to see what drove Ryukishi to like her so much that he made like 17 alternative versions of her throughout his works... But also to see Why it's a character we love and empathise for despite and Why ther portrayal in GOU and SOTSU (A sequel disguised as a Remake) fails.
id say my all time favorite sonic is the sonic from the archie comics partly becuase thats the most fleshed out lore heavy version, and wev had the longest time to get to know that version of him, for character design id say the new films perfected sonics look, his eyes look much better now and for games while flawed id say my fav is sonic heroes. but special mention to sonic the hedgehog 2 on genisis, the very first video game i ever played as a kid in the 90s, part of why sonic heroes is so close to my heart is becuase it did for og sonic what the legend of zelda 64 did, it expanded on the classic beloved world of the 2d games and added glorious freeing 3d, also i have to mention that the sonic boom show is worth watching, yes its a wildly different take on the characters, but very fun, and making knuckles look strong to match him being strong was a good change i wish had carried over into non comedy media.
I don't think you can really solidify Sonic as a character. Even when he's quite goofy, he still has some "coolness" about him. And what is "cool" changes from year to year. Heck, I would argue Sonic in the Sonic Boom cartoon IS cool simply because he cracks meta jokes. That was cool in the 2010s! And honestly I am fine with Sonic changing over time. It's just hard for the fans to deal with that, which is understandable.
sonic to me personally is essentially peter parker thinking hes the sh*t but he is actually the sh*t so its not annoying like those kinds of peter parkers
Someone else brought up spiderman, I can't believe I never thought of them as similar. Some of their iterations are really going for the same thing, personality-wise.
Also, I think they’ve messed up Link in the new games. His green tunic and sock hat are greatly missed on my end. I don’t like BoTW/ToTK Link. Hope they go back to his traditional design aspects in the next game.
Sonic in the games was always a consistent character all the way from sonic 1 to unleashed most of the spinoffs included then in colors they turned him into the americanized b*st**dized version of sonic with only hints of the original remaining and the rest is history.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the definitive Sonic game IMO. It’s unfortunate about the soundtrack over the years, but I love being able to play that game in Origins like it’s 1994 again. ❤
My favorite Sonic is overconfident cool Sonic. Always smiling and never letting the events of the world get to him even when he’s kicking ass or getting his ass kicked. This sonic is present in the majority of Sonic Riders and Shadow the Hedgehog as well as his minor appearance in Smash Bros Brawl story.
Junio and Heese sonic is a great portrayal he’s energetic and he feels small in a giant world he is shown to be fast and speedy and it’s beautiful Modern sonic is amazing like story wise he gets some of the best story’s unleashed secret rings black knight and animation wise unleashed intro and he’s really cool and I like how much emotion he can portray without changing much design Generations classic sonic is just so cool to me and idk why Those are my favorites

If I had to make my own sonic I wold give him 3 modes, one more chill usually when nothing is happening, another making dumb jokes while still being energetic when he’s with his friends, and another one more like the sonic cd intro sonic when he is fighting, although if the fight isn’t very serious he could still make some jokes here and there. Even though this is what I’d like sonic to be in the games I still really like to see how other writers interpret him in other non game projects, that’s why I get so sad when something that isn’t a game is deemed “cannon” just because sega knows that then most sonic fans will go buy it. Maybe I yapped for a bit too long…
My favorite Sonic is Unleashed and Frontiers Sonic. Honestly, in Unleashed he still had Jason Griffith as his VA before he left and did a remarkable job. The Unleashed Sonic made it clear that he just wanted to do the right thing and nothing else. Frontiers Sonic made it clear that Sonic cares a lot about his friends, even ones from past games that just make you realize how far the blue blur has come.
Nothing in particular comes into my mind when I hear "sonic" more of just "oh, the blue hedgehog?" that being said, i think im kind of in the same boat with you on the "spectrum." I think of him as a little funny, cute, lovable, but above all, badass. definitely continue this series in the future. i would LOVE to see more. as for my suggestions... deltarune has some really good characters. maybe do someone on that? you could also explore undertale if you felt like it. or luigi i guess. idk he's great i'd also to see a video about him XD
I like Adventure 2 Sonic the best. Ryan Drummond's acting is great, he has interesting interactions with Shadow, and he and his friends are planning and executing missions together.
In my opinion, I think Sonic has been consistent. Every year it’s always new Sonic stuff. Like literally in 2022-2023, we had 3 new Sonic games. And we’re still getting a lot of stuff in 2024. Madori (I don’t know how to spell here name? said that there’s always gonna at-least be 1 Sonic game coming out every year. Sonic really has been consistent tbh.
Sonic hitting the SA1 pose, doesn't necessarily have to be SA1 Sonic, but I always imagine some sort of Sonic hitting that pose. It says a lot about (what I believe to be) his character, the face he has is cocky and arrogant, the pose can only be done midair so I imagine him gaining some speed and jumping up just so he can hit that pose which gives off this feeling of freedom, and the design of the pose can be interpreted as maybe funny or goofy to some people, but I think it's the absolute coolest pose any character or person will even hit. Cocky, Free, and Cool, that's my Sonic right there

And I think there's a certain level of nobleness to that. kind of ironic that people consider. Sonic and the black knight to be the best depiction. Dudes known who he is from day one.
I think you really did capture the versatility and adaptability of Sonic as a character. I do have to say though, I view Sonic as being pure CD style in looks and personality while saving the day, but is super cute when just relaxing and not being the (light) blue robot destroying badass, and is always very dedicated and caring (stopping him from just blitzing through everywhere with a sonic boom strong enough to destroy everything in his wake). Tails I imagine as the one doing the jokes and being cute most of the time, but still also really cool when he needs to, as I hate the idea of Tails just being a victim until Sonic shows up, and then being just an add-on.

My favorite version of Sonic is for sure his game's version (in all of the games, I think he's a pretty consistent and well developed character) and game inspired versions (like Sonic from the IDW Comics, or Sonic from Sonic X, Sonic from the Sonic OVA, etc.), even if, as you said, we have a spectrum from totally cool to totally goofy/cute, I think all those interpretations, no matter in which side of the spectrum they're in, if they have the traits from the Sonic from the games, being consistent with him, being correct with who that original Sonic is, they're my favorites
For me, Sonic is a cool guy who loves adventures, loves to meet new places, loves to explore around the planet, chill out, relax, support those oppressed who can't defend themselves, being playful, cocky and sassy while fighting and saving the world, is cute without even trying to be, but that's just natural of him, throws in some jokes sometimes, especially to mock those he fights against and even friends depending on his relationship with them, like he does with Knuckles, heads into a competition when it's about racing, loves running, loves freedom, loves being the fastest thing alive, the world's supersonic fastest hedgehog, for me, that's the best Sonic to ever exist and that's the coolest guy I know
And just by saying that, I see how even in the games, even in 2 games from the same era, he has confliting traits, but somehow they still work togheter! But that's what I think when I hear "Sonic", the coolest, cutest, fastest hedgehog on earth!

Sonic was just cool as a kid; snarky, strong, heroic. When I think of Sonic my mind goes to the American Sonic box art version but also the American original cartoon. Close second is the old Sonic anime OVA.
Sonic is really inspiring character. His inconsistent nature is so what therapeutic. It kinda works like religion would work - everyone has ther own version of God in ther head. (sonic.exe reference oh no)
The fact that even Sega can't define Sonic is great as well. Is he an alien? A spirt? A mobian? Just an animal? He is just the thing - the fastest thing alive and that is one constant thing about him. His fear of water as well! And love for chilldogs too!
I think the whole theme of Sonic being such inconsistent and free character is really the core of him. The core that Genesis era allowed because it he WAS consistent at first. The classic era. Kinda he had different version in Usa and Japan and Europe as well. But then Modern. He evolved not only from 2D to 3D but he got those dimensions as character as well! I think that's really cool that he allows for this creativity only because the core is so strong.
And because he is so inspiring is hard to not do own versions. I even have mine that I try to do Visual Novel about (since I'm artist and freak about mental health) and just doing my best. For now is really early but I'm just patent taking my time and wondering if anyone would like to experience this version of him... And his friends!

that was a great video! i always felt there was never a true objective sonic in terms of personality, most people look to black knight for the objectively perfect sonic but then people also disagree, showing that maybe not everyone see that sonic as the best sonic
i think that while there isnt a personality set in stone for the guy, i can appreciate how many different iterations there are of him because it allows different versions to stick with people

The version of Sonic I think of is the Sonic from the early 3D games like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes.
What I love about Sonic is his personality his laid back and smooth he is what makes Sonic, Sonic to me if you strip away his personality it isn't Sonic that what makes him stand out as a character compared to blank slate characters like Mario and Link and we can't forgot about his character design it's simple but it just works the blue fur with the peach skin the red and white shoes his gloves and his spikes my favorite version of Sonic has the cool classic Sonic designs like CD and Mania it's just something about Sonic being short that I just like and I like the classic Sonic artsyle and the Sonic screensaver art it's just peak but if were talking about what's the best Modern depiction of Modern Sonic or t has to be the Sonic X Sonic and Adventure games his character design is really great

id say my all time favorite sonic is the sonic from the archie comics partly becuase thats the most fleshed out lore heavy version, and wev had the longest time to get to know that version of him, for character design id say the new films perfected sonics look, his eyes look much better now and for games while flawed id say my fav is sonic heroes. but special mention to sonic the hedgehog 2 on genisis, the very first video game i ever played as a kid in the 90s, part of why sonic heroes is so close to my heart is becuase it did for og sonic what the legend of zelda 64 did, it expanded on the classic beloved world of the 2d games and added glorious freeing 3d, also i have to mention that the sonic boom show is worth watching, yes its a wildly different take on the characters, but very fun, and making knuckles look strong to match him being strong was a good change i wish had carried over into non comedy media.

I don't think you can really solidify Sonic as a character. Even when he's quite goofy, he still has some "coolness" about him. And what is "cool" changes from year to year. Heck, I would argue Sonic in the Sonic Boom cartoon IS cool simply because he cracks meta jokes. That was cool in the 2010s!
And honestly I am fine with Sonic changing over time. It's just hard for the fans to deal with that, which is understandable.
sonic to me personally is essentially peter parker thinking hes the sh*t but he is actually the sh*t so its not annoying like those kinds of peter parkers

My favorite Sonic is overconfident cool Sonic. Always smiling and never letting the events of the world get to him even when he’s kicking ass or getting his ass kicked. This sonic is present in the majority of Sonic Riders and Shadow the Hedgehog as well as his minor appearance in Smash Bros Brawl story.

If I had to make my own sonic I wold give him 3 modes, one more chill usually when nothing is happening, another making dumb jokes while still being energetic when he’s with his friends, and another one more like the sonic cd intro sonic when he is fighting, although if the fight isn’t very serious he could still make some jokes here and there. Even though this is what I’d like sonic to be in the games I still really like to see how other writers interpret him in other non game projects, that’s why I get so sad when something that isn’t a game is deemed “cannon” just because sega knows that then most sonic fans will go buy it.

My favorite Sonic is Unleashed and Frontiers Sonic. Honestly, in Unleashed he still had Jason Griffith as his VA before he left and did a remarkable job. The Unleashed Sonic made it clear that he just wanted to do the right thing and nothing else. Frontiers Sonic made it clear that Sonic cares a lot about his friends, even ones from past games that just make you realize how far the blue blur has come.

I find Sonic's comedy more silly than funny. Not actually funny, just strangely cheesy and charming.
I like Adventure 2 Sonic the best. Ryan Drummond's acting is great, he has interesting interactions with Shadow, and he and his friends are planning and executing missions together.

In my opinion, I think Sonic has been consistent. Every year it’s always new Sonic stuff. Like literally in 2022-2023, we had 3 new Sonic games. And we’re still getting a lot of stuff in 2024. Madori (I don’t know how to spell here name? said that there’s always gonna at-least be 1 Sonic game coming out every year. Sonic really has been consistent tbh.
Sonic hitting the SA1 pose, doesn't necessarily have to be SA1 Sonic, but I always imagine some sort of Sonic hitting that pose. It says a lot about (what I believe to be) his character, the face he has is cocky and arrogant, the pose can only be done midair so I imagine him gaining some speed and jumping up just so he can hit that pose which gives off this feeling of freedom, and the design of the pose can be interpreted as maybe funny or goofy to some people, but I think it's the absolute coolest pose any character or person will even hit. Cocky, Free, and Cool, that's my Sonic right there
