      The last time I made this Recipe (its just like yours, except more of a Salad, ie Lettuce) was for a Christmas Party. Unfortunately this is a party recipe and its almost impossible to make in single portions. and it will not keep overnight to save for later, though I have been thinking on a make ahead and mix method for a bit now.

    I just ate this salad yesterday at my moms with my mother and my grandmother. It brings back so many memories of us eating it growing up. It is actually one of my favorite things my mom makes. I absolutely love this recipe and Catalina dressing is the only dressing that should be used on this oh, trust me it works, so much so that I actually drove out to a different grocery store to get Catalina dressing because the store my mother went to was out!

    This Taco Salad holds a special place in my heart. My Husband made it for me on our first date--April 20th, 1986. (sour cream instead of the Russian Dressing, though) My family used to go to Disneyland at least once a year and we always ate at Casa de Fritos because it was tasty & inexpensive. The Frito Man also invented Doritos there.

    I too have a taco salad recipe but I have continued to eat it for the ensuing decades. Mine is from 77/78 Washington State where Uncle Sam decided to post me for a while, LOL. Bed of shredded lettuce, diced maters, beans, cheese, and crushed taco flavored Doritos chips when available otherwise nacho or regular and the hot taco seasoned meat with a jar of taco sauce poured on top the. Mix and eat. I'll have to give yours a try with the Catalina dressing sans the corn.

    I live in Missouri and grew up in the 1970s. My mom came home from the factory (as she did with many recipes that I grew up with) with taco salad however this is very little like hers. She used tortillas instead of fritos, italian dressing (to die for. It blends all of the ingredients together)
    instead of catalina, lettuce, seasoned meat (taco seasoning) green onions, tomatoes, red kidney beans. She would layer each ingredient in a very large pot or bowl starting with chips, meat, lettuce, tomatoes, green onion, shredded cheddar cheese and black olives and beans. She would repeat until bowl was filled to the brim. Then shake the bottle of dressing and pour over the top. To this day, this is my favorite of favorites and she still makes it often for family dinners. For me no other taco salad has the same zing and kick that this one did. I am not sure of the exact origins of this recipe but it was one that busy working moms made in the mid west during the 1970s Along with spanish rice, stuffed peppers, meatloaf, broccoli and cheese casserole, Swedish meatballs , I fondly remember these dishes and thought my mom was the greatest cook.
    Thanks for your terrific channel! A part of history is now preserved that might have gone away had people like you not put it on RUclips!

      @@yesterkitchen thanks for replying! My mom used ken's steak house italian dressing not homemade. I have tried the more current types of zesty dressings but they just aren't the same. Another good bottled Italian dressing is Ott's Italian. The effect on the salad is really a game changer because of the vinegar melding the flavors and adding the zing to it.
      I do not recall my mother making many things totally from scratch except on weekends. Most of her recipes had some sort of time saving shortcuts for weekday meals because she worked a full time job. As the oldest, I would always be assisting her in the kitchen and learned to love to cook from the experience. I do not cook many of these old recipes, prefering more healthy options these days (no red meat, lower sodium options etc). One thing I did not like about her cooking was the fact that she would cook canned veggies and cook them unto death! I was probably an adult before I ever ate veggies that weren't a soggy mess!

    Myself and my partner are children of the 80s and both grew up in Texas (myself in East TX and my partner in Central TX). Neither of us have ever heard of this dish nor Catalina dressing. We did grow up with Frito Pie and Taco Salad, but neither were like this. Are you familiar with Frito Pie? Is it related to this dish? The Frito Pie we grew up with was a can of Wolf Brand Chilli, Fritos, grated cheddar cheese, and maybe some fresh onion. It was delicious. We love your channel and what you are doing, but selected this video because we thought it might be related to the history of Frito Pie. I'm curious where the other Texans who commented here found out about this dish and also what grocery store chains stocked Catalina dressing.

    • @yesterkitchen
      @yesterkitchen  4 года назад +2

      Hi Chopper Whitewolf! Love the name! Welcome!!
      I'm so happy you found me!
      So Frito Pie is a completely different animal made to highlight chili out of the can. And Wolf Brand is pure Texas. I know about it, but never had it. I've made it with chili brands we get out here. And it's simple and awesome. So I guess its related, sort of. It's also a riff on the standard taco salad that you are talking about. Which I love as well.
      I have heard from a few other states that have had this. Out here, Catalina dressing is available in every supermarket and I am loving to learn that that isn't the case nation wide. Well, I dont love that it isn't there, I love to learn new things. I grew up on this and its awesome! I would bet that if you cant find it, you can get it online. It has a taste all its own and really makes this salad.
      If you find it and make it, I'd love to hear what you think. I hope to hear from you in another video! Have a great week! 💖🍸
