Cheap Trick are so underated. Rick is a great songwriter and Tom Pettersson on the 12 string bass gives them a unique sound and I can't forget Robin Zander who may be the most underated singer of all time.
Triple platinum albums, rock hall of fame, several top chart positions, 20 million albums sold...and you call them underrated. I really hate these "oh they are so underrated" m+o+ro+ns here on youtube. It's has become a pest. You can't read any comments anymore without at least one "Oh so underrated" idiot.
Nice lesson. Rick is a legend. I first saw Cheap Trick on the All Shook Up Tour. Awesome show. That was early 1981. Rick had a huge guitar collection even then. He would come out with 3 or 4 guitars on and play each in turn. He would take one off and hand to a roadie off the front of the stage. The show I was at the roadie dropped one and Rick was not happy about it. He also was playing the first Hamer 5 neck. It was stolen later. They were a fun band. UFO opened, no Schenker in the band but they still rocked!
Never been this early! Pretty positive Cheap Trick is what got me into playing guitar around 20 years ago. Rick is a prime example of always making it look fun, no matter what. Fantastic lesson as always!!
Great lesson as always, Dave! Thank you! In the last 4 months, I've had to learn over 40 CT tunes. When I got involved in the this tribute, I wasn't sure if I'd like it. I've had more fun playing Rick Neilsen than I thought I would!! It's very rewarding. You hit some songs we don't play regularly like 'Hot Love' but that's a jam! With 'Downed', we do a medley with 'Stiff competition' and 'Yeah Yeah'. You hear all sorts of influences in Rick's playing from Beatles to Zappa. 'Come On's' verse sounds like Zappa's 'Camarillo Brillo' and 'If You want my love' is straight Beatles. I hope you had as much fun learning theae tunes as I did! It was nice taking a break from shredding to tackle a 70s rock icon!
My pleasure! I think you do a great job breaking things down theoretically for your viewers. For example, if I didn't know the modes, you series did a great job explaining the modes. You're one of the few channels I follow. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for this great exploration of Rick Nielsen's way cool guitar work. I also dig his break on the song "The Dream Police" - especially the no-strings version - at about the two-fifty mark. It sounds kind of like something King Crimson would do!
First time commenting here but I had to say "THANKS" for doing a Cheap Trick episode - and not the usual suspect songs - the deep dive good ones. I agree 100% on "Oh Claire" - always loved it - and like you - went "Where's the rest of the song!". Loved the 70's and early 80's CT - if you do more - please do more deep dive songs from then. Love your channel and approach to teaching and playing!
Thanks for the Cheap Trick knowledge and the deep dive. I now need to investigate more than the amazing hits they've had. Mr. Brewster, this lesson was a music lesson and a guitar lesson, thank you again.
Rick is awesome. There is only one that's for sure. Don't forget his Zillion $$ guitar collection. God bless him. The early stuff is still my favorite. Just a classic Rock and Roll guitarist. Great vid Dave. Keep up the great work as always 🎸🤘
The first band I ever saw live when I was still in high school was Cheap Trick. Prism opened for them. Love Cheap Trick. Even their first album has tons of great songs on it.
Mr. Brewster, great video! One of your best, and that says something! Thanks for digging into some of their best tracks, giving me a flashback to my freshman and sophomore years in high school.
Rick is a monster for sure! I think I've seen them six times from about 1988 or 1989 circa The Flame in South Bend until right before Covid, maybe 2018 or 2019 in Indy. Great show every single time. Saw them with Joan Jett (and others) and that was a fantastic show.
Cheap Trick is definitely a quirky band, especially Rick and Bun E. I was fortunate enough to see them live in 1979 and they where awesome. I remember Rick's guitar sounded massive like two guitars. I've wanted a Hamer standard ever since but couldn't afford one, and with today's prices for vintage ones, still can't. 😄
Great video about one of my all-time favorite bands and guitarists. I would say, coming from someone who doesn't know music theory, that the crazy chord names you mentioned during 'Come On, Come On' (I love that song so much) are really more easily transcripted as E > F#/E > A/E > B/E, at least to my my musically rudimentary sensibilities. I've always just combined the two guitar parts, which is easy enough by hitting the low part of the chord and letting it ring while I pick out the higher part. Now, I'm off to go back and relearn "Hot Love" with your chords.
Oh Caroline, off of the second LP, has some great rhythm bits weaved into the song. And a search on RUclips should pull up the video where Rick explains to the audience how to play the song!
Those O Claire chords are very similar to the ending section of Hello There, which opened their Budokan-era shows. I guess it makes sense to say Goodnight too!
When i watched the movie "heavy metal" from (i think it was) 1980, Cheap tricks "reach out" was the song that stuck in my head. I liked Sammy Hagers "heavy metal" and "vetern of the psychic wars" by blue oyster cult but Reach out was the one that really stuck with me. PS: that descending chromatic lick on "Clock strikes" sounds alot like the one on, i believe it was, George Lynches "Tooth and Nail".
Love it!! Rick is awesome. I remember Budokan just came out, had it on vinyl. One Saturday night dad was sitting my little brother and I, which entailed him drinking beer and jamming his records(mostly Beatles and Stones, but a few other classics mixed in). I remember arguing with him that Cheap Trick were better than the Beatles(being 13 I didn’t know better). This did not go over well, and dad ended up smashing my Budokan album to pieces. Next morning my little brother ratted him out to mom, who made his hungover ass take me to the record store to replace it. I'm just glad that didn’t happen 6 months prior, as I was going through my KISS phase, and probably would've argued KISS were better than the Beatles....now this comment will likely be demonitized once Gene sicks his lawyers on me😂 Great lesson for sure!!
You can definitely hear Chuck Berry and old blues style influences in Rick’s playing. Slow it down and you almost hear AC/DC ish chords. But, he plays faster and adds more technically sonic differently. Both bands are fantastic IMHO. Ty for video!
When I think about Rick Nielsen I think about his Amazing guitar collection! Dude has every vintage guitar made 😂😂As soon as I type this you brought up his collection! He has a Aldo Nova Les Paul it’s a Paul with a Explorer headstock
"This one, I'm sure you alllllllll know." Because I had At Budokan first, I knew those versions before the studio versions. So I played the door chime wrong for quite a while because Rick goofs it slightly on Budokan.
Their deep catalog has their best material. If all anyone knows about them are the songs played on the radio, they have no idea about this band. Look up, Southern Girls, He's A Whore, On Top of The World, Just Got Back, ELO Kiddies, Ballad of TV Violence, Mandocello (Live with Billy Corgan), Auf Weidershen (Live or Studio), Downed (Live), Big Eyes, You're All Talk, Clock Strikes Ten (Live), Way Of The World, Love Comes a thumblin Down, Stop This Game, Baby Loves To Rock, High Roller, Stiff Competition, Won't Take No For An Answer, Next Position Please, I Cant Take It, Borderline, Eight Miles Low, Say Goodbye, Baby No More, Carnival Game, Perfect Stranger, Dream The Night Away, Every Night and Every Day, Decaf, This Time We Got It, O Claire, Sick Man of Europe, Closer, You Let A Lot of People Down, Wrong Along, Hard To Tell, Anytime, Sorry Boy, My Obsession, No Direction Home, Blood Red Lips, Floating Down,No Where, Radio Lover, If You Still Want My Love, Quit Waking Me Up, Light Up the Fire, Passing Through
“Oh Claire” from Heaven Tonight could not be any more different than their song “O Claire” from their Rockford album. I guess if you’ve been around 50 years, you can repurpose titles. Love this band!
I basically learned to play guitar off the Budokan album, maybe that's why I'm such sloppy player.. 😂😂 All joking aside, mad respect for Rick and the guys. (And I'm a sloppy player because I didn't practise enough 😉) And the doorbell is the sound of the Tower of London bell..
Cheap Trick are so underated. Rick is a great songwriter and Tom Pettersson on the 12 string bass gives them a unique sound and I can't forget Robin Zander who may be the most underated singer of all time.
Don't forget Bun E.! He plays the skins like a Punk Rock Ringo Starr!

Dream Police is an absolute classic rock masterpiece. I consider it a master class in rock n' roll
Thank you for doing Cheap Trick justice!
I grew-up near Rockford Illinois and love this band.
They played the night of my Bachelor-party in 1998, and we all went. It was awesome.
Great band... I wore out the albums In Color, Heaven Tonight, Live at Budokan, and Dream Police.
Nice to see a deeper guitar look at this band.
Definitely!

Rick has always been a true professional his guitar collection is epic he has numerous burst,s nuts 🤘
Never been this early! Pretty positive Cheap Trick is what got me into playing guitar around 20 years ago. Rick is a prime example of always making it look fun, no matter what. Fantastic lesson as always!!
I've loved Cheap Trick since 1977. Just brutal guitar riffs
Great vid and instruction.
Been listening to CT since the ‘70s. One of my fav bands.
Keep up the good work on your vids. I appreciate them a lot.

Take care man and thanks for chiming in here!

Hi all, from the UK, great lesson
That doorbell is the Big Ben in London.

Wonderful Late Night Cheap Trick Chordplay Lesson! Thanks, David!!!
Huge Cheap Trick fan. Great song selection. My hometown band Rockford Illinois seen that many times.
I've heard the band say that they wrote Hello There so it would be easier for the sound guy to get the levels right at the opening of the shows.
Chords of Saxon 🙏
Clock strikes 12 on a Saturday night.. I use to play lot of their songs. Big eyes. Fun.
Great choice! I really like almost everything they’ve done! Still writing amazing hooks !
Great choice. Rick, one of the unsung Greats. 👍

Beautiful progressions

You should finish that throw away song Dave!

Good stuff! First saw them open for Kiss at the L.A. Forum. The shows Kiss used for Alive II
Great episode!
Rick is amazing, knew it even back then!

Saw them live in Norfolk, Virginia warehouse venue in early 80’s, very glad to have had such a memorable experience!
Thanks Dave! saw them many times in 70s and early 80s, and Rick was as quirky as his solos.
Awesome ❤
Wow, Cheap Trick. Thanks.
thanks so much Dave! Cheap Trick was my first concert in 1982 😊
The riff for oh Claire shows up in a Wilson Pickett song, but can’t remember which one. Seems like a good one to jam on
Cheap Trick, Ohh Yeah 😁👍👍
Btw you are good player/ teacher ty!
Big Eyes is so cool. Definitely Beatles influenced chord progression ala I Want You

rick is an amazing songwriter
70's CT is the best
“Oh Claire” from Heaven Tonight could not be any more different than their song “O Claire” from their Rockford album. I guess if you’ve been around 50 years, you can repurpose titles. Love this band!
Thinking if I correlate this to tabs may get it better

Hot Love!
Can you do a W.a.s.p chordplay please?
Had their early stuff on 8 track
If you are looking for a riff to keep your neighbors up at night😂
...and David ain't kidding...!
Must be nice to have big hands like that
Rick Neilson was Pee Wee Herman before Pee Wee Herman...
captain stern is going to reach out and take this video
Cheap trick had so many songs bout suicide. Crazy band with different characters. Best band ever .
Well I can't stop the music... I could stop it before. Now I don't want to hear it.... don't want to hear it no more..... STOP! This Game!!..........
Dave ... how about some Uriah Heep ?
request: Art Tatum
I hear a bit of Iggy and the Stooges
Gonna raise hell
‘Really ugly’
!❤️
California Man
Awkward and nerdy .. there's a reason I gravitated to Rick and his playing
