"Wurm" really is unbelievable... I was about nine or ten the first time I ever heard it in the 70's and just blew my mind. It really was like being launched into space.
I couldn’t agree more in regards to how awesome Xanadu is. I grew up listening to the Exit Stage Left version on an already old record player my grandpa had (the thing had tubes!). The crackle and pop just added to the mystery of that song. Every time I listened to it I escaped to the caves of ice.
Focus' "Hocus Pocus" is, without a doubt a progressive rock standard. I've been a prog rock fan since I was a kid, about 50 years now. I was fortunate to be exposed to progressive rock at a young age and I was entranced by it and I have enjoyed it ever since. I was pleased to see Marillion in the video, even if was just for a moment, they are a great band who is still touring and recording. Perhaps you could investigate their music in a Chordplay episode. While I generally avoid calling out "favorite" songs, Xanadu is probably my all time favorite Rush song.
Hocus Pocus.. nice touch!! Beatles: "George Martin" was the magic behind the Beatles.. he's a classical composer, and he taugh those boys all they knew, and they built on what they learned from George Martin..
Seems a life time since I heard that Marillion track, they were pretty popular in England in the mid 80’s when I was just starting out on the guitar, I’ll be digging out some more to listen to for sure
Can't believe how much Focus have been coming up again lately. My son was recently doing the engineering on their next (13th?) studio album, in The Netherlands...
Rush and Yes are all time great for sure and it was nice to hear some more obscure prog rock from the past. Great lesson Dave!!! Keep up the great work 🎸
What up man, I'm excited and happy to see you are putting out some material. A albums worth. Congratulations. Can't wait to hear it. Also I can't wait to check this lesson out
Andy Latimer lead guitarist of Camel out does himself on The Snow Goose album. Gentle Giant Octopus is a great record. And the Strawbs were a great prog band.
That's Focus! Hocus Pocus baby! Doodeeelooodelideleledo Edit: I love Prog! Uriah Heep, White Witch, Star Castle, Jethro Tull, of course ELP, Yes etc. etc The 70s were the best time for prog. I would say that was their decade, because when you get into the 80s, You've got the beginning of synth laden pop, and all that. There's nothing like the sound of a Wurlitzer going through a Leslie Cabinet! Steve Howe is one of the masters of prog!
I distinctly remember the Gary Hoey video to "Hocus Pocus". He had these crazy cameras attached to him like he was Doc Oc. I like Hoey's version better than the original with the shred licks he throws in.
Rush, Zappa, Yes, Pink Floyd, Camel, Jethro Tull.. I should know the others, but maybe just never saw the album covers. Please feel free to Prog-Nerd any time.
Excellent. I think we need a tutorial on Triads as upper extension chords. From one Prog aficionado to another. Check out the Nordic Prog scene... Wobbler, Gazpacho, Anekdoten and Black Bonzo are all worth a listen. Polish band Riverside also particularly good.
I am really glad you made this video relating to Prog-Rock, I am a big fan of various Prog-styles, mainly Prog-Metal, but this was an eye opener to some of the chord styles and shapes that have the flavor I like. Now I have a good list of bands to go looking for to listen to for inspiration for my own playing style, by the way, you ever do anything on Spock's Beard??
Late 70's is the First time I heard Wurm I was on Mesc in the back seat of a chevy Vega with a great sound system and it transported me to places I know that every one in the packed car had not been haha when I got back to earth haha I got home and picked up my guitar and learned how to play it- Great Song Steve Howe is trully one of the greats!!! Early 70's I was focused on Black Sabbath and Led Zep Rush Deep Purple etc. Met a friend who loved bands like Yes and Hawkwind etc. haha "Sonic Attack" love the fact that Lemmy Kilmister was on that album- hard to believe compared to Ace of Spades etc.
Gamalon was AMAZING! Cabin 14, Black Licorice, Billy's Saloon..... I think the guitarist was George Puleo, and that guy had chops that frighten me to this day. I remember the second album, Aerial View, wasn't quite as good (a bit more restrained). I do love the song "Common Ground" from the third album (Beautiful jazz melody, and such an emotive solo)
Gamalon,, yep,,I have on cassette, discovered them in late 80's-ish? "The King", love that one! It's like the song in the "Owl Jolson" cartoon,, well, same kinda mood anyway.
David, Can you do a Pat Travers Chordplay? Heat in the Street, Makin Magic, Hooked on Music, Crash and Burn, I,Love, Love, Love, Ya,Rock and Susie, Killer Instinct (incredible song), and the stand out soloing in I’d Rather See You Dead. Thanks
Before we called it prog rock it was called art rock and before that it was just called album rock or concept album rock. Today it might be called dad rock idk lol. Other mentions in the gendre might be, Anthony Phillips. He was a Genesis alumni and have a few albums in a folky fairytale style of his own. Then a german band that would be an ELP clone but, wow their album Spartacus is fan effing tastic. The album art is notable too with it its white mouse inside a lightbulb. Odd visual that doesnt speak to the concept of that album but its a picuture you see and ponder upon.
i loves me some prog-rock. all the greats of course but the one album i feel defines what prog rock is is close to the edge. i know any number of albums could be called `the one` cause we all come from a different bent but, thats mine. mighty contenders would be voyage of the acolyte, brain salad surgery, the mighty three floyd offerings, darkside.. wish you...animals. Its a tough field in that realm. didnt even mention a genesis album, wow shame on me.. TRICK OF THE TALE! huge!
"Wurm" really is unbelievable... I was about nine or ten the first time I ever heard it in the 70's and just blew my mind. It really was like being launched into space.
Not the best
Love that song since the 70's.. (Hocus Pocus)

Always been one of their best songs imo.
Geez Sensei Dave! Do you have a mind reading machine on you?? 🤣 Seriously this is just what I needed! Thank you sir!
Thank you, David!

I love these kinds of chords!!!! Thanks, David!
Please do a chordplay episode on Marillion. That would be amazing. Steve Rothery is still playing amazing guitar.
So underrated
Gentle Giant!!!
Thank you for the gentle giant. I kind of figured you would like them.
I would love to track some drums for some of your own prog stuff... I do play guitar too😊
Camel are great, you actually hear a lot of their influence in Opeth.
To seek the sacred river out to walk the caves of ice 🤘
Great lesson Dave, thank you. I love how you change the album covers on the wall behind you each time you introduce a new song ! ❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥
Check out “Contusion” by Stevie Wonder Dave, so good too !!! 🔥🔥🔥🙏🙏🙏
Seems a life time since I heard that Marillion track, they were pretty popular in England in the mid 80’s when I was just starting out on the guitar, I’ll be digging out some more to listen to for sure
Grendel!

The Pressure Points live album is excellent. My introduction to Camel on the tv showing the live show.
I saw Gentle Giant open for RB Rainbow back in the day. One of the best live bands I have even heard!

Could you do an episode on Nick on Venusian Summer/ Lenny White? I got hooked on fusion when I first heard McLoughlin. 😂😂

One thing I really appreciate is the variety you have on this channel. Thanks mate, now where's the Zappa :D

Nice guitar arrangement of the Piano line from Lavender!

Your channel is awesome.🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I listened to that Gamelon album twice in one day! Super awesome!!! Thank you! Reminded me of some Randy Coven :)
Oh yeah, the guitar solos were incredibly done!!! I was jammin!!!

I AM THE EGGMAN THEY ARE THE EGGMAN I AM THE WALRUS
Hocus Pocus love that
❤
I would love to see a video on the chords of the mars volta
What are you thiughts on King Crimson? I realy like thier progressions and chords.
Not too shabby 🙃
"The difference between prog rock and prog metal is the amount of distortion." John Petrucci
Why Not is probably the hardest rocking song of GG. Wouldn't call them "definitely obscure", more like the prog-rocker's prog band.
That Gamalon record is all kinds of weird. Just the sound palette alone!
Featuring rock n' roll yodeling.
To be honest Shabby rd studios gets some really good tones.
Definitely!
Can you do a W.A.S.P chord play?
man David, is there anything you cant play???
Kayleigh>Lavender ftw
I love you
