I've been a Cheap Trick fan--and fan of this song--for decades, and this is without a doubt the best tutorial for the song I've seen. Thanks for sharing!
For me, this is the perfect mix of #1 actually knows how to play it, #2 provides enough detail AND keeps it compact.. realizes I can pause and repeat. For me this is the perfect level at which to document a lesson. Highest praise and thanks! I learn this song and forget it every couple of years - with this video , I spend 20 min and I know it again! Totally brilliant approach!
I totally agree. Most tuts go painfully slow. This one is paced perfectly. It assumes you know something about playing guitar first but that makes sense because if you don't, you probably aren't ready for this song.
I've been playing for 40 years + and I needed to learn this song quickly for my band and came across this awesome video. Shows one is never too old to learn. Not just informative, but great fun too!
Great job showing all the intricacies of the song. Rick's an often overlooked guitar player, but he was/is great at coming up with some awesome stuff and using the whole neck.
I don’t know a single person who knows music who overlooks Rick Nielsen. And I know a lot of musicians. Maybe your average idiot on the street doesn’t know who he is, but anybody’s ever picked up a guitar does. The guy’s a legend.
That was awesome! Cheap Trick was the first concert I went to when I was 14. haha Rick plays some strange chords and configurations, so its cool to see how he plays certain parts of the song.
Great way to do a lesson. Play the entire song all the way through once, so we can just watch you play it. GENIUS. I'm the kind of person always asking you to HTFU, so this style is great for people like me! Thanks for a great lesson.
Great lesson man!!!! You have a real gift of sharing there. I'm glad you're willing to share it and do so with such joy and enthusiasm. You sir, are the man.
You got this nailed to the T, Rick Nielsen can't play this as good as you, a flawless tutorial, made this so simple from 1st note to last, thank you! Hope Tux is still around...
I follow a few great players on youtube. but you Erich have topped them all. I need to cover this for my band and if I can nail it half as good as you do I'll be happy. Thanks for recreating a classic rocker!
First-time viewer. Instant subscribe. Fantastic stuff. Yes, you nail the notes but more importantly you capture the energy & spirit of the song. Bravo!
Excellent lesson! Thanks for this. I really appreciate the style and pace at which you teach this stuff. BTW- I want to say that chord at 10:50 is a Bmaj7add11- but I could be wrong.
GREAT TEACHER......NO KIDDING! I've learned it but I needed to see if anyone else heard and Played it like I did. Anyways Thank you so much for posting this GEM......🎸💚
I started a really bad rumor about you.......... I have been telling all my buddies to check you out for awesome lessons and sharing your page like mad..... love Tux, my cat heads for the hills when i pick up a guitar..... she is such a critic. great lesson once again...... two thumbs up........ Don't trust the man!!!!
Wow great job man ! We just added this song, I have to learn it now, or at least attempt to..It might be above my paygrade, Your video is going to be a big help Thanks !!
Excellent!! Picked up a few new tricks and licks I didn’t catch years ago! That was great. Thanks! Oh , and big thanks for not laboring on and on with each lick. Other lessons drone on and on...finger by finger... 🙄 boring. Some of us are already pretty good...let’s keep it moving like this!
we are starting cover band with beginners, and we love to play the golden oldies... thnx for this footage! very helpfull ! keep up the good works.... greetings from Holland !
Not gonna lie, it’s kinda frustrating when you tell me multiple times to go to the tab, but your link to the tab takes me to a page with just this video and a link to a tab that’s actually a link to nowhere.
Man, I totally agree with you... but the background video on the ultimate guitar error page has got to make you feel a little better. "Cuz it do be like that sometimes."
Rick was the greatest rock guitar comedian. He's fully aware that he's loaded every conceivable cliched lick into a single song. And does it with casual panache. This great lesson exposes all the gag lines in the extended joke. Great stuff, thank you Erich!! 🙏🤘😎
Erich, fun video to study and practice its individual elements. I don't know much about effects settings, could you share how you get the Cheap Trick guitar "sound" you use in your video? Thanks.
I always loved the song, but wasn't sure if I could actually figure out how to play the darned thing. This tutorial put me on the fast track. Agree with others, presented very well--not assuming a kindergarten audience, no hipster silliness--right down to brass tacks. If you can't immediately grasp what's goin' on, you're not ready for what's goin' on. Gear related question: Is the straight tie attached to the strap button or do you let that swing free?
this is a perfect guitar lesson. Geez I hate it when someone is telling me every finger string and fret number for every simple chord. This is how I learn.
Another fun & great lesson in your contagious "style/interpretation" of this awesome song. You make learning songs FUN!!! I've learned a few songs from you & LOVE the way you play this & Billy Joel's "You May Be Right" which we now play on almost every set list. I play in a cover band & we are learning this song now and we have 2 strong lead guitarists. I've downloaded & printed of both guitar's version of your tabs (that are listed above). I have a question: If I was to play a harmony version of each of the bends and/or licks and my other lead plays the part you have taught (in this video) would you suggest I play "up" a diatonic 2nd for each of the bends (similar to like the ending duet in "Hotel California") type of harmony? Or, do you have another good suggested "Formula" for creating a harmony part - 3rd/5th/etc? Again thanks for ALL you do. Your style, wealth of experience & knowledge, combined w/your similar taste/appreciation in awesome songs to play in our cover band; makes my dreams come true of learning all these songs that I wanted to learn (back in the day) in high school - when there was no internet/RUclips & we couldn't afford to get me lessons. So thank you for helping me achieve some of my life long goals. I appreciate & really enjoy what & how you do your amazing & entertaining videos. Someday perhaps, I will be able to afford actually lessons from you. Until then, I will continue to keep on rockin' in the free world & learning from your schaweeet lessons here. -> Have a great day! ;-)
I've been a Cheap Trick fan--and fan of this song--for decades, and this is without a doubt the best tutorial for the song I've seen. Thanks for sharing!
I love that you play it all the way thru before you start the lesson. Really helps me grasp where it's going.
Love this song. It's one of those songs where the live version is far superior to the studio. Great job by the way. Spot on.
+Tan Gerine Thank you Tan for your very kind comment. Keep rockin and stay in touch! e:)
I just noticed how difficult this song was
That’s some mighty fine guitar playing! You make it look easy. Nice work!
Thank you kindly!
For me, this is the perfect mix of #1 actually knows how to play it, #2 provides enough detail AND keeps it compact.. realizes I can pause and repeat. Wow! Tons of technique tricks here. Thanks for sharing your skills with us.
I've been playing for 40 years + and I needed to learn this song quickly for my band and came across this awesome video. Shows one is never too old to learn. Not just informative, but great fun too!
Glad I could help!
Great job showing all the intricacies of the song. Rick's an often overlooked guitar player, but he was/is great at coming up with some awesome stuff and using the whole neck.

Overlooked by whom?
I don’t know a single person who knows music who overlooks Rick Nielsen. And I know a lot of musicians. Maybe your average idiot on the street doesn’t know who he is, but anybody’s ever picked up a guitar does. The guy’s a legend.
Dude has never been overlooked
That was awesome! Cheap Trick was the first concert I went to when I was 14. haha Rick plays some strange chords and configurations, so its cool to see how he plays certain parts of the song.
Was for me too. About the same age- I saw them at Chicagofest at the old Navy Pier.
I love the way you teach......NOT overdone with verbal instructions. Great job.
Great lesson, explained very well! And no made up fillers like most youtube lessons tend to have. Thanks!

Great way to do a lesson. Play the entire song all the way through once, so we can just watch you play it. GENIUS. I'm the kind of person always asking you to HTFU, so this style is great for people like me! Thanks for a great lesson.

@mrmackee123 DITTO, man...DITTO!!!!
Excellent lesson! Thanks for this. I really appreciate the style and pace at which you teach this stuff. BTW- I want to say that chord at 10:50 is a Bmaj7add11- but I could be wrong.
Fantastic play through. Thanks for taking the time to post it. Really fun song. Appreciate you not taking the time to explain everything!
+Douglas Lamando Thanks Douglas! e:)

I really like the faster paced style of your lesson here. It’s not at all like watching paint dry like most other tutorials. Mahaloz!🤙🏾😎🏝️

"Cuz it do be like that sometimes."
what can u expect when this was posted over 6 years ago
Very good. Merci❤
Thank you too!

Thanks.
Thank you my friend! This is my Les Paul run through my Fender blues Junior. The only thing I'm using for tone is a full tone OCD distortion pedal.
nice work bruv.
Appreciated😀👍🙏
dammmmmmmmmmmmmmm that was killer playing!!
Thanks, friend.
Great song Eric. Could you do a more detailed lesson on this. I'm a blind guitar player and I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks in advance.

Ha ha! Always swing free man!
chanel #9.. "no hipster silliness" 😂.. I am so gunna use that. Cheers. Hahaha...
this is a perfect guitar lesson. Geez I hate it when someone is telling me every finger string and fret number for every simple chord. This is how I learn.
Hi nice tone what amp you using to get that tone,is spot on
Thanks, man! Fender, blues junior, with a Fulltone OCD.

Thanks my friend! 3rd and 5th notes above your melody will create those harmonies you are talking about. Basically skipping a note.
