at what time can I expect the big life belt?
Thank you so much for the Smiter guide! I can't wait for D2R tomorrow! I have never beaten the game thru hell, I haven't even done cows ever in D2. I have learned so much from watching your play along guides, your speed running, and your end game guides(like this one). I have ALWAYS played Barb but I am going to use a Smiter for my first character. Thanks again, MrLlamaSC!!
How did it go?
Man you are awesome. You work so hard for us. Thx from Germany my friend. I watch your vids every day and have a very nice chill with you. So hyped on the hype train choo choo d2r come on :D
Just wanted to say big thanks for the guides! Comin back to d2 after 20 years is awesome, did my first Uber ever today. Got lucky with the Lo rune find and made an almost P grief. GG MrLlamsc
I’ve watched a few and these and they are amazing. Thank you so much for making them.
Never forget your legendary D2 UBERS ON A MEGA BUDGET run back in 2019, that was a thing to behold. Great content, love it!!!
just beat the ubers and dclone for the first time with help from your guide, thank you so much MrLlama!!!
Another option you have is the 1 point smiter. Invest in zeal and sacrifice and use zeal for mobs and switch to smite only for bosses. Crushing blow is your main damage dealer and the guaranteed hit from smite is enough to take on ubers
Yep I used to run a zmiter build for Ubers with a last wish for life tap. Made them so easy. But last wish is so expensive
a 1 skill point smiter guide would be interesting to see. I've seen a lot of guides online suggesting getting smite only max up to lvl 10 since the damage is not increasing that much if you max it and you're damage output comes anyways from cb.
Cb does less dmg when monster has low hp so you need dmg for the end
"Grief is going to be the main hand, it's SUPER cheap..."
Yeah, Lo are dropping so much, you just don't know what to do with them...
thought the same, im playing offline and started with d2r release. played 3 characters to over lev 90, had 1 vex drop and never saw something above :D
Yeah it's the same thing with these online guides, always high end items that most people won't get unless they trade etc. I've put huge amounts of hours in to D2 and I've only ever found a couple of semi high and none of the most sought after high end ones.
He gave budget options....grief is cheap compared to last wish
Just do LK runs at players 8 for a few hours. Its boring as hell, but you'll drop high runes. Grief is not that difficult to get. Last wish is damn near impossible in single player.
@@iliatha that’s cause your suppose to expect high runes to drop when you farm for them, not quest through the game
Wow I was never that early. :D
Even I can't learn that much anymore from these guides, thanks for the work!
Fleshripper Unique Fanged Knife is perfect for Ubers. You can usually trade for it for super cheap, it is only good for Ubers and hardly anyone uses it or mentions it. I just put a Shael rune in it to increase the attack speed. You don't actually need Grief and it is a waste of runes imo. I would also recommend getting Zeal, because you will go insane single hitting groups all the time. Zeal is also a great way to leech health back quickly when life tap hasn't proc'd yet. I also prefer Gore Rider boots due to the extra FRW. Good guide, but I would also mention that you don't need 99 and a level 77+ is just fine once you meet the gear level requirements.
Is Fleshripper better than the Black runeword? Last night I did some baal runs to get some levels, but it seems like I cant kill a single mob with Black and Smite. So maybe switching to a higher damage weapon like Fleshripper and use Zeal would help?
@@Woyt90 A couple things. A smiter really isn't good for running anything other than bosses in Ubers in my opinion. Of course you could use a smiter on regular Diablo and Baal, but you are going to struggle with lots of enemies because a smiter is usually good at single target damage. Also, your damage comes from crushing blow and deadly strike, not the weapons base damage. So make sure that you have other gear that boosts cb and ds like GFace, Goblin Toe/Gore Riders, etc. Also, you need life tap for a smiter either gloves or a wand. I just wanted to point out that a smiter is typically endgame Uber running, not Hell Chaos or Baal runs. Peace!
@@Sparks3D I don't believe deadly strike works with smite.
@@megamastah I didn't say that it did, it helps with Zeal. When fighting groups of regular mobs, you aren't going to single target smite them all. What I do when running Org sets is to hit an enemy once with smite to keep them from running, then switch to zeal and bash away. What doesn't work with smite is Life Leech, so when fighting groups, you need to switch to zeal to get your health up until you can get a life tap proc. Again, a smiter is a specialty class designed for one thing, Uber Bosses. If you want to survive groups on the way to them, you need to be part Zealer.
I actually found that weapon on pindle..still have it somewhere is it used as main or secondary?
3:23 - i would correct you there: When you get to Holy Shield, put every point you can in it as you level up, since it gives base flat damage to Smite and early shields are pretty bad in terms of base damage. The best shield in all normal is actually shopped Spiked Shield from Drognan in Act 2 with just 5-9 dmg... More points in HS also increase duration by a lot, which reduce mana consumption heavyly.
Mr Llama I watch all your videos and love your content. I hope all is well in your life and you can keep making awsome d2r vids
Been waiting for Smiter vid from MrLlama for awhile! Can't wait to try tomorrow!
You should make the guides without anni and hellfire in mind. 50-60 str is then not enough.. Dusk shroud needs 77. The boots 94. So before such items, you need more points in strength.
@Jonny Croxville it's called using respecs
When u respec later and have a lot more health.... you will appreciate it
Just use other charms my guy has an empty inventory. The +skills is not vital obviously since high level is not mandatory. He can't make another 20min video on one subject for that.
@Jonny Croxville wdym. If you can't use your gear (any mix of the numerous items he mentioned) put points on str untill you can use all your items and have max block with holy shield on. It's more confusing to pull out a chart for you with every possible variants of gear.
@Jonny Croxville *Dex for block. (As he mentioned) . He tries giving you actual knowledge so you can make your own decisions based on your gear.
Hi WallyMtl! Thanks for the words of wisdom. I know you were trying to contact your future self, but I'm glad I took a glance at the chat. Have a good day sir.
Guardian Angel was my armor of choice on my old Smiter that existed before runewords took over the game. 90% all resists. Two perfect Dwarf Stars and you're sporting 30 magic damage reduction with absorb (and can easily hit 50 or more). 10 points in each elemental resist aura and you're rocking 95% resistances with nullification of whatever gets through.
Throw a life tap wand on switch and you can survive any encounter.
Last Wish sucks for general combat. The blind overrides lifetap on strike and you gain no health back. It only leeches on the single strikes when lifetap procs. This of course still works on bosses 100% of hits because they can't be blinded... But you'll suffer against common monster groups as you try and fail to get life back even off a lifetap wand you keep for emergencies.

Your build videos are simply amazing.
In MrLlama we thank
Well, you heard it here. Grief is super cheap ... apparently :D
In 20+ years of playing D2 on and off, I've seen LO drop 2 times.
Super cheap for guys like him that has groups of people willing to give shit to him for free
@@DezZzO_YT Or for people who are willing to farm the runes for days. Yeah ...
@@decode.666 been doing that, not even close :P
@@DezZzO_YT I've been playing quite intensively few years ago and the best things I've dropped were Death's Web, Crown of Ages and a CHAM rune. Which was kinda useless, since I'm playing SP only, so no way to break it down ... so it was just chilling in my stash :D
@@decode.666 yeah, never had great luck either. Been grinding baal for the past days, the best thing I got with 300% MF is like a Shaco I think?
Your vids are missing a showcase of the build like doing some cows or something to see how good it is.
It wouldn't be great at cows. This build excels at doing ubers.
But I agree see them in action gor a few min
nice, but what all of the guides lack is to tell what works and what doesnt work with a skill, does lifeleech or deadly strike work with smite or what does work with amazons multishot in your bowazon guide. that would be great to know as a new/returning player.
Lifetap works, but leech does not
Life tap only, life leech DOES NOT work with smite. But life tap does, thats why draculs gloves are so good and basically a requirement because it gives life tap.

thank you for this guide MrLlama, i just made a last wish today and holy crap was that a pain to farm for heh.
Last Wish definitely the most expensive runeword in D2R right now
3 jah runes, and the top of the cake, sur and ber. Its near impossible

Ha! That's a coincidence. I just watched your older smiter video! Round two baby.
Just on merc selection, if you end up using Last wish, get the holy freeze merc.
Smiter can cost alot...no wonder had to do it on LOD account...
Rate this equipment list:
Helm: Crown of ages
Armor: Chains of honor
Weapon: Grief
Shield: Ethereal Exile
Belt: Verdungo
Amulet: Mara
Rings: Raven/Bul Kathos
Gloves: Dracos
Boots: Gore Rider
Figured this configuration would cost a lot in resurrection, but it was my old school build from LOD years ago.
Chains of Honor or Fortitude?
Can you make a guide for the 1-point smiter? I would like to be a little bit more viable in PVM when I don't have a sorc friend to tp my ubers.
"Grief is going to be your main hand, it's super cheap."
What.
Ya I paused too, but relatively speaking, its cheap compared to other best in slots. A Lo for best melee wep in the game hands down is nuts
leveling with smite seems like a very bad idea. i'm trying it now and at level 26 i do no damage at all. my normal attack does three times more damage than my smite damage.
This is a super late reply but you need to use holy shield to increase the damage of smite.
Hmmm, he deleted items on his merc?
Would Fort be better than COH for Ubers? Larger damage but sacrifice Res
Thanks for making these videos.
Stuck between using coh or fort for this build, whichhhh!?
I'm pretty new to D2R and decided to roll a smiter. Why do you have those particular items in the second weapon/shield slots? Do you swap to those in any specific circumstances? I don't really get it since grief seems to be so strong.
Its CTA, its used in a ton of builds, when you swap to CTA weapon, you will have a spirit too, the CTA has battle orders and battle command and battle cry on it, those are normaly warcries only a barb has and it really makes you over powered. The spirit adds plus to skills while you have the CTA on, so when you swap you hit your battle crys, then you swap back, battle crys stay on for a couple minutes even after swapping back.
@@samuelyeet6006 ahhh I see! Thanks a bunch 👍
I never ever hear anyone talking about smiting. I just asked if anyone uses a build like this. And than I found this video. It was meant to be
I still haven't made a CTA for my smiter. All gear is solo self found (on BNet because I like to play with my wife from time to time when she's on a D2 binge).
Only gotten 3 torches so far. 2x Meh druids and 1x meh Assassin.
My smiter is using:
GFace (Um)
The Redeemer
HoZ (Upped with P Diamond), but used a +39 all res paladin shield into a Spirit before that
Treachery for Fade and then Smoke
TGods
Seraph's Hymn
Ravenfrost
Dwarf Star
Dracul's (will prob swap these out for Lay on Hands now that I found a good lifetap wand at Akara)
Gore Riders
A bunch of res and life charms
Super easy to make a smiter if you started with a Blizz Sorc to farm Hell Meph over and over ;p
Get to it bois! Smiting = Justice!
Why do I never hear about StormLash for a Smiter? I've heard of it for a KickSin, but with Lightsorb, Crushing Blow, 30 IAS, good damage, etc.....what makes it poor for a smiter?
My current build, a Holy Fire Paladin, just got it to Torment today. I didn't see, and I know I'm posting on an outdated video, but do you have any guides on youtube for that?
Thanks for all the info
2 questions:
1. do you need defiance, or better to put the skills in resistance buffs (fire and lightning)?
2. raven frost is one ring i intend to use. Should second ring be bul-kathos wedding band or dwarf star?
1. Resistance is the key to do ubers
2. dwarf
Why CoH instead of Forti. Can someone explain?
I always level a new Pali with hammers (making hdin) until i get good enough gear for smite and then I respec to smite. Much easier and stronger to build hdin while leveling and gearing then respec 2 smite
I have an interesting question for a smiter, if your using your shield to attack and do damage why is your weapons durability going down and you have to repair it, if your using your weapon why dont you get the benefits of that weapon when you attack with smite?
That's how the game mechanics work with smite.
You do get some of the benefits from the weapon - whether the weapon gives an aura, crushing blow, open wounds, curses... in addition to the attack speed of the weapon.
@@jameshaulenbeek5931 that's the thing thou, I see no life steal or mana (not that I need that but still) or open wounds or anything that my melee weapon has for extras
@@johnkovacs9722 what I would say then, if you can, make a Steel runeword in a cutlass. It's a fantastic mid level (or low level) smiter weapon, with the one downside of needing regular repair.
As for life leech, your only option is using life tap. You can get it as a "chance to cast" on some items, but your easiest and cheapest option is to either find or buy a wand that has life tap charges, and keep that on your switch.
Other cheap RW options are Strength and Malice, but you'll definitely want to look into other ones once you're able to find some of the higher runes.
Keep an eye out for phase blades once you're in Hell, as they're indestructible and won't require repairing.
Other items that give crushing blow and open wounds will stack with your weapon. Goblin Toe is a great item that can take you through Hell difficulty.
What suggestion do you have for using a paladin as a group character?
It’s the same as your solo builds, just make sure you have 1 point in fanaticism, conviction, and salvation. Even a single point is enough to give a significant advantage to your team
I've never done solo ubers and i have an offline hdin on d2r. I've Made 6 characters solo through hell already. I've got 2 hotos, cta, eth cv insights, 1 bk ring. No enigma yet. Tons of other gear (deaths fathom, nightwings) that don't apply so much to hdin. I just found the last key i needed to make the ubers and I'm gonna use this lame-uh guide to respec him. I'm scared! Wish me luck
Diablo wiki says hoz is not a good candidate for the upgrade recipe because of the increased strength requirement, however I read that some people do upgrade it, what do you think?
Surprised there was no mention of Lightsabre.
I love how he keeps saying "Grief is super cheep" but it has Lo in it, which is NOT "Super Cheep".
Happy Smiting everyone!👋🏽
14:17 Big life belt!
When he says something is SUPER CHEAP, but it has a LO rune inside... WTF I guess I'm mega poor
Then the main thing I would recommend for you to do with your builds if you start showing them more frequently is that you show what runewords you'd recommend for normal and nightmare in weapon rate because just showing the final product doesn't help to a certain degree.. Like people still have to go through normal and nightmare all the way into hell and probably all the way to the end of hell trying to figure out where these rooms are that you need for your weapons and running with crappy runewords
Why not put remaining points in defiance for holy shield synergy?
The bonus to your max resists are a big deal.
Heavens Light with 2 shael Runes is super gg budget, usually I won't even get grief if I have it tbh. I'ma key grinder lol.
what about the runeword "Malice" in a Divine Scepter base with 3 to Fanaticism ? Is that a legit uber killer or you still lack the crushing blow here ?
So if I understood good, Smiter is a little better density destroyer, compared to Zealer? Answer would be very appreciated :)
According to him smiter is the best melee build in the game for normal play too, not just Ubers. I just got to nightmare, doing countess runs and I tend to agree with him, previously got to hell with ww barb and close to that with zealer, fury druid, concentrate barb and smite is better at least so far.
Not missing is really a big deal!
My version uses FOH and Holy bolt synergy with max smite, fanatacism, HS and the rest in zeal. I have not seen an equal destroyer anywhere. FOH and holy bolt for phys immune, zeal for small mobs and smite for bosses. Nothing comes close to the speed he destroys bad guys with. The ONLY thing he doesn't have is teleport.
Too much godly stuff needed for me on this..i did build a smiter i cant build it it to this level..far too much an oridnary player like me cant get
I always use 4 PDiamonds Shield for my HC SP Smiter.
“Grief will be your gg super cheap weapon”
How is that cheap?? 😳
Lo Mal is pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to the 3 Jah's of last wish.
@@infernalz1337 the grand scheme of it is that most people will never have 1 HR

Yeah Lo is not hard to find, white phase blade just do chaos or cows runs without magic find on, I got like 3 in the last two days. Good thing about phase blade in Chaos is that you can just roll it for sockets as it has a 50-50 chance to roll 5 or 6 (so no wasting a larzuk quest). First one I found rolled 5. Seriously though for how stupid OP it is it is NOT expensive at all, especially compared to the other best in slot smite weapon (last wish) good lord that shit is expensive
mr llama you savage
Hello guys, can any1 please explain why dump 20 hard skill points in to Fanaticism aura when you are still playing with Holy Shield? Wouldnt be better get those passive resistances ?
That 4680 fhr breakpoint tho 😆
What about defiance for the HS synergy?
6:45 should we be using a grief berzerker axe becuase it has more range than a grief phase blade?
Smite is going off your shield.
GriefZ is better for PvP because of longer range (50 ias is required, so 40 ias GriefZ + bloodfist or 30% ias GriefZ + 20% ias source) but PB is better for PvM (no durability, no ias required, shorter range can be useful). I played GM pvp smiter for years
@@LosN209 The attack range of smite is determined by your weapon
Zerk is better for WW because of range.
What do you guys think - making a smiter as an all purpose first character or hammerdin? Aspects I consider important: must do anything, moo moo and ubers, must be able to work with cheap gear, must be fun, must be able to farm anything. Thanks for your thoughts and see you in 20 hours in hell ;)
Hammerdin is much more of an all purpose character, however you’d need some super heavy duty gear to be ubering with him. I’d roll hammerdin to build wealth then go smiter once you’ve got a little gear and are ready for a torch.
Definitely Hammerdin first then once you have a good weapon and some crushing blow items and life leech, I’d say you could play smiter. But Hammerdin is definitely much more of an all purpose character
really nice funny build, thanks dude i ll try it out :D
I like Llama and all... but this isn't a very good smiter build for current D2R tbh.
MUCH better off skipping the points in the resist aura.. and getting FoH + Holy bolt instead.
Let's you farm WAY better, and still have a super fast baal/uber killer in one build.
His gear is pretty on point, skills is another thing. Don’t need the resistance skills, should have defiance maxed out cause that helps holy shield. AND should have Zeal so you can have a better chance for the life tap to activate as well as the Fade skill from LW.
I figure Llama knows a few things about a few things about this game. Seems he has played it for maybe a smidge bit of time.
It's a build intended for taking down Ubers; extra defense isn't as advantageous as getting your max resists up closer to 95.
My Guillaume's face have a socket, what should I put on there?
Um rune is great for extra resists.
How about attack speed breakpoint?
what about using our own conviction aura to override mephisto? isn't this a thing anymore?
can someone explain what he means by adding dex until max block? whats considered max block? 4:06
Could you link said play through? Would love to watch the hardcore guided play through where you take it to Ubers!
ruclips.net/video/YbFU3dXHF9k/видео.html
What would you recommend to add crowd kill Speed, If one plays purely single Player?
This might be WAAAY too late... but I recommend NOT putting those points into resist lightning/fire and instead dumping into Fist of the Heavens and Holy Bolt.
I myself run a FoH/Hammer/1point smiter hybrid online. TBH smiter is just overkill for ubers. I swap like 3 gear pieces and kill them just fine with 1 point smite, 1 point holy shield, and 1 point fanat. No Uber footage or anything in here, but gives you an idea of what FoH can do... can optionally replace the hammers with full smite. ruclips.net/video/6FuCs3kGOKU/видео.html Don't think I showed it in this clip.. but I just swap to a black + sanc for ubers. :P Not super fast, but gets the job done.
that's unreal build
So you bought a new merc and lost the gear your old one was wearing?
Not pumping points to defience, synergy for more defense to holy shield? 🤔
What do you feel about using an honor before you can afford Grief? I still need a Lo rune and a 5 socket phase blade to make it, maybe I will try and trade some of my other HRs to get a Lo that way.
You might as well use your fists
@@7thDayTheory Yeah I noticed that weapon damage doesn't effect smite damage in the slightest, life leech and such either. I have never played a smiter before, only Zeal. So I think I will stick with my Black RW until I can afford Grief 😁
Thanks for your comment!
Thoughts on pumping hammers and concentration as well for dealing with groups or physical immune? Vengeance is an option as well but just wondering what people thought.
tbh I feel it wouldn't be strong enough in Hell without Vigor and blessed aim synergy, so probably a waste of points.
@@Will_B_Fit fair enough. I was just thinking of other uses of skill points since there’s so much flexibility with the Smiter.
@@casualgamingdad2424 yeah really good idea though, it MIGHT be strong enough to solo Hell groups with no other players in the game, but I haven't tested it. I'll save up some respec mats and try it out sometime and let ya know.
@@Will_B_Fit yeah for sure. That would be appreciated! The other idea I had was to max conviction for where you’re in a group to remove immunities for others.
I use FOH and Holy bolt instead of hammers, to round-out my smiter. Saves points and does very well.
This is probably a dumb question but if you max out holy shield with a smiter why wouldn't you max out defiance as well since it's a prerequisite for holy shield?
From what I have gathered more defense is not key for survivability. It’s all about maxing out resistance and life stealing. Defiance just adds more defense to holy shield when activated and nothing else. Could be wrong on the concept but that’s what I have gathered from researching and listening to other players
points in defiance is a waste. Max holy shield and a good set of armor, you have 75% block chance an 20,000+ defense. Max resists next to that with lightning absorb somewhere and a ravenfrost. You'll be nearly unkillable in PVM.
What to do about phys immunes though?
Go around them
Some phys immunes are also undead, in that case, good for the paladin, as you simply switch your aura from fanaticism to sanctuary and thus reduce their physical resistance to 0 and do damage.
@@Trkskter another possibility is to max vengeance + resist fire & lighting
