  • Part of my Wine Standards Series. Wine Standards are wines you really need to endeavor to try during your lifetime to understand what certain wines should taste like.
    For Chateauneuf du Pape, Chateau Beaucastel is one of these wines. Probably among the top 3 producers of CDP.
    In the video, I forgot the name of the pope...it was Pope Clement V in the 14th century (who was formerly the Archbishop of Bordeaux) who moved the capital of the Catholic Church from Rome to Avignon. Chateauneuf Du Pape translated means "the Pope's New Castle". Luckily he was a wine lover and supported wine production in this region. Also supported by his successor, Pope John XXIII.
    The great deal is Coudoulet de Beaucastel....if you ever see this wine, you should buy it as it is essentially a CDP but priced as a Southern Rhone wine. Beaucastel is on the Northeastern border of CDP and their vineyars are cut in half by the border line so the grapes used in Coudoulet come from the same vineyard as Beaucastel but just geographically they are not inside the arbitrary border line of CDP. Coudoulet is about 1/2 the prices of Beaucastel
    Blend of Beaucastel is a bit different every year but for 2017, blend is 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 10% 8 other grape types that can be used in CDP (including some grape types normally used in white CDP) and 5% Cinsault. What makes Beaucastel unique is higher than normaly percentage of Mourvedre, which adds dark color, tannins, violets and licorice and the use of 5% of grapes normally used to make white CDP.

    Thanks for posting you thouhhts on this wine, I have just ordered up some of their CdP Rouge from the 2017 vintage which I am looking forward to getting stuck into in a few years' time. In the meantime, I also ordered up some 2018 Coudoulet du Beaucastel. I have had 2013 Coudoulet several times last decade and it was a delight to drink (better than many other producers many CdPs).

      Alistair: thank you for viewing my video. My recollection is Coudoulet provides exceptional value for the price and is drinkable right away but can also gracefully for 10-15 years. Cheers!

    Moved the Papacy to Avignon... Stayed there for about a dozen popes I believe... Never learned that in Catholic Studies... Hmmm... LOVE CDP's !!!

      P G: I think wine lovers owe a lot to the church...if not for the monks and the popes. there would be very little support for wines at that time. Cheers1

      Thanks Derek for the kind comments 2015, 2016 and 2017 were all exceptional vintages. 15 & 16 might still be a bit tight but the 17 should be great with a lot of aeration. Really great example of CDP so if you don't like this wine, you probably won't like other CDP. Keep watching and keep the comments coming!

    Love the video. I often drink their sister winery, Tablas Creek, in Paso Robles. Vines were imported from Beaucastel. Not quite as high quality as CDP, but very good wine.

    I drank a 2012 Jaboulet Ch9duP a couple of weeks ago and it was outstanding. I last tried it two years ago in a blind, comparitive tasting and it has now developed an extra layer of complexity. I would say it has reached its peak - luckily, I have three more bottles.

      Nice! I never really thought that much about this producer until I did this review. Now that I have put some effort into getting to know this wine, man, is it a great buy. Consistent good and provides tremendous quality price ratio

      Hey Allen: thx for viewing my video. I have purchased both the 2015 & 2016 but haven't drank them yet. In the last year or so, I have drank the 2004 which I rated 92 pts. I found that vintage quite rough and spicy and plateaued. I have drank other vintages of Beaucastel but they never really made an impression on me. I also had the 2014 Hommage a Jacques Perrin last year, which was great but very young. I am not normally a CDP fan but that is why I was so surprised I liked the wine. If you are a CDP fan, I think you will love this even more than me. 2017 should be slightly more approachable than 2015 and 2016 but I drank this bottle over several hours. It had great balance and I think it is combination of great vintage and a winery that is hitting it on all cylinders. 2018 is slightly less concentrated so I would l recommend buying the 2017 to drink now and waiting a few more year for before opening the 2015 and 2016 (which were both monster years). Please keep watching my videos and providing comments!

    New castle of the pope. The pope needed a summer castle north of Avignon. So they built one and planted vines. I’ve been there. The Nazis destroyed the Chateau as they fled. The ruins are still there. I’ve had a 2003 and have a 2009 in cellar. Try le vieux télégraphe.

      Noped Thursday: thanks for viewing my video and your comment. Time to drink up 2003 or can it go longer? I am not a big CDP drinker but the 3 I like are Beaucastel, Vieux Telegraphe and Le Vieux Donjon. I had Rayas but tasted like peat moss to me (I am not a big scotch drinker, as you can tell). picked up a 2018 of this to have this weekend as my first >$100 wine. bute store didnt have the '17 so i'll open this and decant. would you say this needs a food pairing? I tried the Meysonniers on your rec a week ago and it was good on its own, but really excelled when I had it with a t bone i fried up

      aiffskull: thank you for viewing my video and your kind comments. Yes, this wine definitely needs food. If you thought Meysonniers need food, CDP has much more alcohol content and body.
      Enjoy as this is probably the best quality for value ratio CDP around. Cheers!

    Hi Tony. I’m really enjoying your videos. I buy $50 bottles at the most. But you’ve really intrigued me with your reaction to this wine. Being that I don’t want to cellar this bottle, would you still think it’s worth the price especially me wanting to drink it so young?

      EKL Chebu. Thx so much for subscribing to my channel and your kind words! This is a great wine and I was surprised after 2 hours of aeration it was so drinkable. If you can afford it, you won't be disappointed! However, if you are looking for value, see my video review of Chapoutier 2016 Crozes Hermitage Les Meysonniers. Quality of video is terrible as I was just starting the channel but the wine is selling in B.C. at $29.99
      ruclips.net/video/rKr-YIF2_u8/видео.html
      My #1 value wine currently is Penley Estate 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Phoenix priced in B.C. at $21.99. Australian Cab and loads of fruit. If you don't want to cellar, this is your wine and I almost guarantee you will love this wine. Crazy good value. I will try to do a video review of this for you in upcoming videos.
      I will be posting a video this weekend on a B.C. wine called Osoyoos Larose. Again, an over $50 wine and Bordeauxesc style wine so might not be right for you. In addition, I will be posting videos in my new "Starting from the bottom" series where I go through wine appreciation from the very beginning. So my first two videos will be on why you want to be a wine enthusiast vs wine drinker and how to open a bottle of wine.
      Please let any of your friends know and have them subscribe. And comments are always welcome but don't be too harsh on me!

    Nice video, I am a fan of CDP too. Perhaps you can introduce a number of other CDP from a number of other wineries and given that with 13 grape blends, each bottle is quite unique and I have never tasted a very bad CDP only too young ones. Notice you are keeping your 2015/2016 but drinking the 2017, Any guide to drinking window is good for CDP ? 4 years or 10 years ?

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  2 года назад

      Willis: thank you for viewing my video and your question. I actually don't drink a lot of CDP as I don't like high alcohol wines so I tend to like to drink aged CDP. I think CDP drink really well in the 8-15 year window after the vintage. Please like and keep watching! Cheers!

  • @Spiritchaser93

    I did drink the 2018, at first I was picking up alot of Pyrazine - green bell pepper. Not sure if my nose/palette is working well LOL, everyone else is claiming meaty, spicey notes. But this felt closer to a Chilean red than an Australian Shiraz. Your thoughts?

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  2 года назад

      Spiritchaser: thanks for viewing my video and your comment. That sounds about right...green/bell pepper is a potential aroma/flavor and it shouldn't taste like an Australian Shiraz (even though CDP is also Syrah based). Chilean red is pretty generic but I could see this tasting like a Carmemere blend from Chile.
      Stick with your own notes. I recall when I drank this 2017, I thought it was spicey but it could be vintage and how long you air it...that could give you quite a bit of variation in the aroma/taste profile.

    Would you recommend their 2nd wine, Coudoulet de Beaucastel? From my understanding, it is the same wine without the prestigious AOC. Is the huge price difference justified in terms of quality?

    • @TrophyWineHunter
      @TrophyWineHunter  2 года назад

      Jacob: thank you for watching my video. I have had both wines and I believe there is a difference in the quality. Coudoulet is a great value wine but does taste more like a Cote Du Rhone wine (lighter in style). Whether it is worth it to go up to CDP Beaucastel depends on personal preference and what you want to spend on a wine but I think both wines provide value compared to their price. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

    Coudoulet is a totally different blend. The terroir is of course the same, but only has 4 grape varietals. Not the 13 of Chateauneuf. Completely different wine.

      Its definitely a good wine. A lot more mourvedre than Chateauneuf and is also allowed to sell early, so ageing and decanting is the way to go for Coudoulet (' ')b
