    One of the highlights of my wine travels was a visit to Beaucastel, complete with a tour, tasting, and brief encounter with Francois Perrin. It was also the one and only time I was able to taste the Villes Vignes Roussanne. Special producer.

    Beaucastel is one of my absolute favorites and it hurts my heart that I don’t have near the budget to drink it on a regular basis. I’ve had several bottles of the 2009 and it’s spectacular. A good option from Beaucastel for those needing something less expensive might be their Coudoulet de Beaucastel CdR, which also has a larger portion of Mourvèdre.

    I discovered this wine at the restaurant Noble Rot in London. It was the 2000 vintage and it was a transformative experience. Amazing. I sourced a half case of the 2000, full of 2016, and half of the 2017. Thankfully the prices are better in the UK. In either country when you compare the QPR to Bordeaux, and doubly so for burgundy, the wine is a great value.

    Very late here now but I couldn’t possibly call it a night without watching this video about one of my favorite producers in Southern Rhone. Château de Beaucastel's Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines are some of the best wines I had tasted in that magical region - and this outstanding video certainly brings back memories of that autumn visit and tasting. You have given us an excellent overview of this CdP marvel including vintage recommendations, and it has definitely increased my knowledge about Ch. de Beaucastel. Thank you for that! Santé, John!

    Mourvèdre fans (like myself) should perhaps travel further south to Bandol and try Tempier or Pibarnon at less than half price for a Beaucastel. Perhaps a nice subject for a future video? Santé, Tim

    The first "expensive" wine - meaning 60 Euro I tried, was a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de la Janasse, Chaupin, 2012 (100% Grenache). It was amazing. The first thing I thought of when tasting it, were strawberries.
    I tried the Coudoulet de Beaucastel Rouge, which is a second, cheaper wine from Beaucastel. With that one though, I wasn't impressed at all. I haven't tried the main lable from Beaucastel.
    But if you like Grenache and come across a Janasse, Chaupin, give it a try!

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  9 месяцев назад

      Thank you for weighing in. I have one of these shorter videos for Janasse coming soon. I'm a fan as well and have enjoyed the Chaupin many times. Definitely a different style and the Coudoulet even has more Mourvedre than the top wine, so if you prefer Grenache, that one is definitely not in your wheelhouse. Cheers!

    I have just ordered up some of their CdP Rouge from the 2017 vintage which i am looking forward to getting stuck into in a few years time. In the meantime, its "cellar defender" is the 2018 Coudoulet du Beaucastel. I have had 2013 Coudoulet several times last decade and it was a delight to drink (better than many other producers many CdPs).
    If you you like Mouvédre, have you looked at 'Old Garden' from Hewitson in the Barossa Valley? Dean Hewitson, demonstrates what magic can be done with "the worlds oldest Mouvédre "!

    Ah, one of the great wines. That and Vieux Telegraph were my favourite Ch.NduP wines in years gone by but, alas, they are out of my price range these days. Btw, have you tasted the 2020 Barolos yet; the Wine Society has just published its en primeur offer. It sounds good for relatively early drinking and, as 2020 will be my last year for en primeur purchasing, I might indulge. The Roggeri Ciabot Berton looks a steal at £145 for six in bond. I recently had a 2011 from that vineyard and it was superb. Do you know this producer/vineyard?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks very much! I tasted some 20s from Giacosa. They were definitely surprisingly approachable given their youth. I’m not familiar with that producer, but it is definitely hard to go around at that price!

    • @stevenholt4936
      @stevenholt4936 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@AttorneySommThanks. Around the same price is a producer I had not come across previously: Costamagna from the Rocche del Annunziata vineyard, which is a lot cheaper than Ratti's offering from the same patch. Do you know Costamagna?
      Going back to Ch.neuf for a moment, I have half a case of 2016 Mont Redon in TWS cellars, which I will probably take delivery of in the summer. Haven't had Mont Redon for probably 30 years - have you tried it lately? If so, is it on form?

      @@AttorneySomm right, after much agonising, I have gone for the Annunziata, mainly because I have not drunk it before, although I note that I have a single bottle of the '18 in TWS cellars as part of a mixed case bought en primeur a couple of years ago. From what I have read, though, I might be drinking the '20s before the '18s. Anyway, thanks for your assistance in helping me choose.

    I was surprised that the red was 75% Mourvedre. I obviously wrongly assumed that the majority of the blend was supposed to be Grenache and the rest could be any of the allowed grapes. I have learnt something new today 😊
