A few years ago I made a video of me making the cheapest Frankenstrat replica I could for under $300 as seen here:
• How to build a Franken...
Since then I have had an enormous amount of requests to do another Frankenstrat video making the highest quality replica that I possibly could. So I spared no expense on this build and cut zero corners to create the most authentic and detailed replica possible. This build cost me about $1100 in parts and materials and took nearly 18 hours to complete.
If you're interested in learning more about this guitar or any other guitar, feel free to send me a message through my facebook page above or send me an email at shelbyfanss at yahoo dot com!
I think its funny how this man spent so many hours replicating( and doing it perfectly) a paintjob that originally took anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.
luuk341
This video is only 16 min long...so he did it in 16 min.
*facepalms*
spiritualfingers
please tell me that was satire
Josh Didn't he paint OVER it?
SpiritualFingers damn bro
Shoutout to those who didn’t have this pop up, but searched for this video because of the recent news. RIP Eddie.
If 2020 couldn’t get worse
@@crappyanimations2678 It definitely didn't get any better! What a shit year
It's so strange having him gone now.
The world just feels a little different when someone who’s inspired you so much has passed
I'm still in shock
Never crossed my mind, even when I knew his health was sketchy.
I don't think even wolfgang knew how bad off he was
He said he was in shock he died
better to have had then not though...we all be sittin on the devills lap someday...hopefully ill figure out how to play like that before then as my guitar gently weeps
I love how you can go both ways with building a frankenstrat. You can either go the limited budget route and do it on a tight dime like Eddie did initially, or if you can pony up the dough, you can build a 100% accurate replica and by the end of either you still have a decent playing guitar and not to objectify guitars as wall art but you still also have a great conversation piece in the house that you built yourself. More of a win win in my book.
Rest In Peace Edward Van Halen, you will be missed
and now you have a $25,000 guitar
Will Gouin more like $1100
Alex Bartlett, he’s referring to the 25,000 dollar Frankenstein replicas made by EVH and Fender
@@acedvulpes2759 They're spot on tho, but i would sell them for like 8000 max
@@christiancibulka1886 they use the wrong reflector lights
@@Notinserviceij -- ooh but BRUH Fender says it's the official copy! Haz certificate.
Now that Eddie passed away i can do nothing but forever thanking him as my first guitar inspiration. Thanks Ed. I recall back some five years ago listening to 1984 burrowing the cd from my dad... Excellent build! Thank you.
As far as I know this is the most iconic guitar paint design in history.
could you please do jimmy page's dragon tele?
yes
Love that idea
F**K YES!!!!!!!!!!!
HOPELESSLY HOPEFULL ok? That's irrelevant......
that was pretty normal at the time... at 14 the body is pretty much already developed.
I put a lot of sweat, tears and blood into this build. RIP Eddie of the 5 Texas concerts I went to the 12/4/91 Dallas West End was my favorite...
That's how you honor one of the most awesome guitarists of all time! RIP Eddie Van Halen!
I hope he used the same cigarette brand Eddie smokes, else it's not a good replica.
And the brand is ?
What do you think? He smokes the best ones, of course!
ah so Marlborough 100 menthols ;) ah im gonna pay for that one lol
Marlboro Reds!!!!
Funny!!
Could you do a replica of Randy Rhoads polka dot flying v? or Brian Mays guitar? Thanks great video!
Rhoads was a great session guitarist turned great stage legend R.I.P.
@@kennethwilliams6916 amen
Since Brian Mays signature guitar was built by him when he was a teen, Im certain that guitar is a super difficult to recreate.
@@archangel5627 it would super hard to source accurate parts as the guitar was essentially made out of scraps. The neck alone was 100 year old fireplace mantle and it was that old in 1963!
@@gameroftheyear1000 Exactly. I don’t think anyone could accurately build a full scale working replica of Brian Mays’ guitar with his classic signature sound.
Here since eddies passing broke news😔❤️❤️🎸 RIP EVH. Thank you For your influence on MY Playing Dear Brother
Controversial opinion: 1974 quarters give you more low-end.
yep. and a penetrating high certainly not found in 71...damn shame Eddie loused it up and this fucker copied him. Dang shame.
Mine is Blue with red and white stripes and a 76 quarter because Liberty...
I used a 69 and it gave scooped mids
81 is better
Especially with the energy crisis
I tried a 2112 quarter and got my guitar destroyed by the priests of the temple of syrinx
It's amazing how in order to make a properly reliced frankie, he went through making and relicing the b&w predecessor, then painted it red like ed.
Wild
Edward Van Halen Still Lives Rock In Peace.... Oct 6, 2020
Peace? Or piece
Thanks Word 4 word perfect
You should have started relicing the neck at the part where David is like "I brought my pencil! Gimme something to write on baby." because that would have been funny.
Great vid! A request! Can you do dimes lightning bolt ml!
True
OMG a Dean from Hell replica !!!!! You gotta go for it Mills!
yeah!
yes !!!! please try to do the Dimebags ML !
Luke Dolfine I
It would be great if you did a video telling the processes, materials, techniques that you use to do these replicas
He would lose his job lol
@@harleck9119 lmao
Along with the total cost of all parts I have a general idea but still it's be great to see . The luthier hours put in has to be the most expensive part
Sand between the white coat and the red if you do this with 80 grit. this paint job has too little imperfections.
Do you know what pills I use?
I love what Eddie said about his FrankenStrat..."It really is just a piece of shit.".....Exactly. Iconic guitar because of the player. Eddie was great and always sounded like himself no matter what he played.$25,000 for a replica of a piece of shit is the ultimate gold covered turd.
After Dimebag slipped it through the pearly gate into the bushes to retrieve once inside, he probably thought, “OMG! What a POS!”
Eddie walks up, “Darrel, I need my guitar back!” “The Holy Grail is an AMP!”
😂😂😂😂😂
awesome video!!!! rest in peace Eddie you inspired a generation of musicians and musicians today to pick up the guitar! Thank you!
Monterey Pop Hendrix Strat?
Ahahahah I just suggested him the same thing on the SRV's guitar video !
+Lustûcru Maybe he'll do it haha
Hope so ! IThat guitar would be so, so useful !
Dime's Dean From Hell!!!!!!
I was gonna say the same
Yes!!!!
Just go buy a shitty Dean guitar from a failed guitar student. I’m sure it’ll sound about the same 🤣
RIP to the legend 😭
did a frankenstrat myself in highschool. took me about a month to do and though it was my first/last replica it came out really good, and i didnt fully realize that until i watched this and saw how close our guitars are lol. people let me tell you how stressful that paint job is to do. HOURS of taping, looking at pictures, then going back and taping it again to make sure its right. its pretty funny thinking we spend hours if not days doing a paintjob eddie probably took an hour to do most likely drunk back in the day but it looks so cool.
if youre considering building one, go for it. its probably one of the most radical famous guitars you can build on an extremely low budget and with little experience, not to mention its a shitload of fun. theres loads of reference material and theres nothing special really about the guitar, just take the time and get the details right as with any build
The Frankenstein pickup alone is around $150- $200. How did you make it for less than $300?
Edit: Never mind. I'm a dumbass who doesn't read the description carefully. My bad.
@外国人 shoulda been a PAF pulled from a Gibson if he was going all out lol
Andrew Villarreal nah that pickup was gone when it was painted red. He switched to a mighty mite pickup for a bit, then to a pickup that was specially wound by Seymour Duncan himself and then it was a Dimarzio super distortion. At it’s finally transformation it was a Wolfgang pup and then the guitar was officially retired.
Dude thats frikin awesome!!! One of the most accurate replicas I've ever seen man, you should defenitely start making more of both this replica and the budget one and put them up for sale I would so buy one!!!
Amazing job man. I'd love the talent to be able to create something as beautiful as that iconic guitar.
I played one of the £25k replicas by Fender a few years back at a music shop in the UK and it was quite surreal as Ed himself is documented as saying he could barely tell them apart from the original.
Love the Kiss chords in the demo too. Love the way Ed took them and made them his own.
good to have you back
+Alberto Lopez Haha thanks, everyone always says that. I never go anywhere though, I'm always here! It just takes a very long time to make one of these video's. I'd need like 3 of me just to post a video monthly. Good thing is, I did 2 videos at once this time, so expect another one in a few weeks or so!!
+Mills Custom Guitars Great!! Your content is awesome. Keep it up.
Well 11 months have come and gone.. when is the next video lol!
frankenstrat nerds be like: iTs NoT tHe SaMe WoOd GrAiN tHaT eDdIe HaD
You can never redo the piece of wood Eddie had. No 2 pieces will be exact. Even book matched pieces of wood have differences. Sorry, even Mother nature can be a bitch...
Back to when I was 15 years old !!! You really mastered this one !!! Thanks for the great video !!!
That's some serious patience with that X-Acto blade man. Props
Oct 6th 2020- One year ago today.. Edward left the building.♫♥♪ Great effing video.
Amazing! Attention to details is. INSANE! Thanks for sharing
I just spent an hour of my day comparing a hi-resolution image of the original "Frankenstrat" to the replica built in this video. And it was an hour well spent!
Haha I love how you did it with actual cigarettes
Yup.
Flakka Stunts gotta love the authenticity
Great guitar build and song choice.
Can I ask for a request? If so I'd love to see one of John frusciates guitars replicated. Either his 60s sunburst strat or his white strat. That would be awesome to see. More so his white strat because it is more beat up and the white is stained and the neck has some nice distressing to it.
Watching this video because I’m making my own frankenstrat off of a $50 guitar I got at a thrift shop, and I’m taking inspiration in the paint job 🤘
R.I.P EVH
Awesome Brad.I saw the VH 1 And 2 tours when Eddie was really screaming.
Eddies also had a Valerie Bertanelli pube under the pick guard. You know, for added mojo.
Bertinelli idiot.
@@kellphil76 good to see another commenter that went to the jimmy carr school of banter and niceties
Joseph Stott i don’t understand why y’all are arguing when you’re right. i mean that’s not even a joke it’s just kinda disgusting to even think about. excuse me i’m gonna go bleach my eyes now
That was awesome. I grew up playing all the VH stuff and listening to the music while I watched was great. You are a true craftsman. Saving this vid (how are you able to play VH tunes and not get shut down?) Pray this video stay up forever.
When you start "relicing" the floyd rose my soul lost a piece
Ive got an Original Floyd that I put in my 1990 Ibanez RG570 in 1991. 27 yrs later and it still hasnt lost much finish on it, no corrosion or anything and Ive played that guitar enough that the frets are pretty worn down. Its about to go in for another level and polish. But then again I guess ED has a bit more miles on his....lol.
@@markrogers7304 it also depends on how much you sweat and how corrosive your sweat is. I have a strat that I bought new and within months, the pickup and pick guard screws were completely rusted, at least the ones near my right hand position. Not long after, the bent steel saddles and the bridge screws rusted as well.
@@theangrycheeto oh i understand. My screws always rust over quick. But all my original floyds still look lightly used and i have 4 guitars with original floyds all look about the same. Now for the licensed crap that came on my jackson looks like ive played it daily for 20yrs with buckets of sweat running over it, that thing is junk.
RIP to the GOAT EVH, thanks Eddie!
Do an Yngwie malmsteen strat replica! I'm begging you!
yes please
I'd love to see that !
Yes! This would be awesome!
Yellow painted stratocaster, with hot rails and a scalloped fretboard
Garnet Bezanson. His classic "play loud" one.
This is the greatest video on the internet
that's very cool, could you make a guitar like that Hendrix Strat with flowers?
I waited 9 months for another video...
You didn't disappoint! Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thanks
Beautiful Job! And your playing is pretty sweet too..😆🤘
i get its supposed to be a good replica but the detail you go into is incredible.
It would be cool if you did a Feed The Homeless replica guitar.
you mean Arm The Homeless ?
retronax Yes, sorry for me being dumb.
I cant believe hes gone
Wasnt the whole point of this guitar was to not be copied lol
Well, to copy it like this would make it extremely expensive to sell for what you get (just look at the price tag for then 5150 evh striped series guitar) so there would probably be only a.small group being able/wanting to pay a check in the 1000 range for a replice
Given enough time and energy everything can be copied.
@stimb anything's possible.
You’re right! But it went full circle... Eddie became the best, and the Guitar became huuuuuuge
Marvin Hanson Umm...no. The whole point of Eddie building his guitar was to make something that worked for him that wasn’t available to buy at the time. He didn’t make it not to be copied. But after he built his guitar and he revolutionized what could be done on such a guitar, every manufacturer rushed out to copy it. The birth of the SuperStrat.
This production quality oh my... Spot on
Can you make a replica fleabass?
Never seen one before.
Neck even has rosewood inlays like the old charvel necks! :)
You really put a lot of work into this guitar, watchin all those little details come to life was cool.
Man, your playing and singing is really good and those songs you wrote are pretty catchy! I hope you start a band and record these someday. 😉
and name it Van Halen, and get Ted Templeman to produce.
Awesome replica! What killed me is your playing dude! Flabbergasting!
Every time I see these replicas being made I can’t wonder why nobody ever uses the Kramer neck.🤔
Because the original had a Charvel neck. The tones on VH1 are the most sought after. Not the tones he got with the Kramer neck
@@2204JCM The VH1 era of the guitar didn't have any red paint on it yet and used a Fender trem. The Fender Stratocaster headstock is what is currently on the guitar.
Ed might pick that up & never know the thing is a Clone. Das Awesome! Great Work!!!!
Pls can you do a replica of Angus Youngs Original 1968 Gibson SG
BenRoyFothergill just buy a '68 gibson sg standard?
All angus did was pot the pickups in parafin wax, not even for the tone, he claims he did it so his sweat didnt get the pickups wet.
just go buy one,,,its stock.
@@stephenpaddock9799 ahahahahahaha wow
@BenRoyFothergill that's exactly what I was thinking
We missed you so much!!
R.I.P Eddie Van Halen
Amazing video! R.I.P. Atomic Punk!
RIP EVH
This is by far the most accurate replica i've seen on youtube, well done my dude
Hey man you think you could also do some lessons? like changing pickups and installing Floyd rose bridges and stuff?
Whell... have a quarter dollar dated 83 here! The year I first saw the mighty Van Halen! One day it would be part of my own Frankenstrat!
RIP to the man. #EVH
Great job. Looked at close up photos of the original. Amazing accuracy.
I've got a really good idea for you. You should make a replica of dimebags "dean from hell". It would be awesome
Come back these vids are awesom
I LOVE VANHALEN!!!!!!!!
MCG did my Franky, it's freakin amazing! Talented dude!
Do Eddie's Ibanez destroyer
Damn right.
@@duck_5150 i feel like i’m not the only one who wants to see him take the chainsaw to the guitar
Looks great and that quarter is a great year since I was born that year.
Very cool. Can you explain some of the processes you're doing in the build? What are you using to dunk the bridge parts? Is that a lube? What were you doing to the pickup etc. That would be a good tutorial on why it's better to get a custom guitar than your typical off the rack factory job. What necks do you use on these builds? I didn't see that mentioned in either vid.
man....you put a shitload of work into that beast, awesome !!
John frusciante'a sunburst strat with rosewood neck pretty pretty pls
2:32 it's like a negative of the original black and white paint job -- super cool
What brand of paint did you use? Excellent job!!!! Any 5150 Kramer builds?
Santiago De Ponce, I don't know what he used but Eddie painted his with schwinn bicycle red spray paint originally.
Not sure why this video is so Riveting? But It is & I was glued. Great choice of songs also 😳 Awesome Job. Tanx
great job!!
Tone is very accurate as well. Incredible
Belo trabalho, pena no Brasil é quase impossível de ter uma dessa!
damn.. that's amazing man..
I want an EVH Rasta guitar!!!
Im sure Eddie did 'drop by' and smiled at this guitar. RIP EVH
how much to have you build one
Nice job! I doubt Eddie ever put that much effort into the original but it's a perfect replica.
Kurt Cobain vandalism strat
That was even better than the budget build.
can you do a Dean from hell replica???
And could you give it away?! HAHA YEAH RIGHT
so all my rock and soft rock listening tonight brought me to this kick ass video. Funny how some things in music stand out, like this guitar, or Stings jacket, or MJs beat it leather jacket etc. This was super cool especially the guitar playing at the end. I know its just uploaded but this should have lots of views.
Do the dimebag dean from hell
Sick brother. I came for the build and stayed for the music... I've never seen the back of that axe... Didn't know about the reflectors of the quarter. Killer job!
I only put this video on to listen to the music cus im too fat to make my own Van Halen playlist.....
his work wreaks of antiquing good job sir!
