This might be exactly what's wrong with my 07 4cyl. I never had problems until a few days ago, the exhaust is very loud now and coming from the engine bay. Its below freezing here so I can see the exhaust coming from underneath the engine. When I'm idling I smell exhaust in the car but when I'm driving it's fine. Any comment on the safety of driving like this? Thanks
Thanks for your reply. Safety wise you'll want to adjust your vent to recirculate so you don't draw any of the fumes into the cabin. Other than that it won't fall off and leave you stranded. Hope this helps.
@@UncleTinman Thank you for your reply, I did an experiment tonight; drove around in city traffic for an hour with the cabin air recirculating and a handheld Carbon monoxide detector to make sure fumes weren't coming in. No change in the reading compared to outside, this could be a temporary safeguard for people who can't afford to get their car fixed right away.
Thanks for your reply.. the parts were sourced from local parts supplier. I don't recall the exact diameter, but I think it was a 2.5" diameter exhaust flex...your local auto parts store or exhaust shop should carry them.
Thats the bottom catalytic converter. 400 dollars to get the piece plus welding it. Its a lot cheaper than getting the whole pipe. Must meet California emmissions in some cases. I also had 2 ones in 4 years plus the top engine one. Only put high test gas in for now on. Some gas stations can mess up your car.
He replaced the FLEX COUPLING, not the catalytic converter. He also didn't clean the original pipe before welding. Wonder how long before those welds will separate and cause another leak or two???
Right under my car I keep hearing a crazy sound, like a bending clicking sound. I think its my exhaust, and maybe its this. Not sure, but worried I will fall victim of a scam if I go to a shop.
Is it the flex pipe that makes the loud noise under load? Especially when ac is on and in drive...I am replacing this exact piece. Hoping it takes that sound away. If not I'll replace the entire exhaust system, please respond thank you
If its the flex pipe that's cracked.. I'm going to lean towards it to be a bandaid fix and won't last too long. Reason being is that the flex pipe bends and moves with the torque of the engine.. so over time it'll eventually move around or break. That's my opinion. Cheers.
When i put my 08 in park and rev it, I hear NO ticking from engine or anything but when I put in drive and accelerate, it kinda sounds like a ticking sound down under my driver area. But engine doesn't tick or knock at all. Could this be exhaust?
I recently purchased a 2002 Camry ...it has a loud exhaust at acceleration up until I get around 45+ miles an hour on the highway then the loud exhaust goes away ..sounds like its coming from up front ..do you think it's this part ? Thank you in advance
Good question. It's very possible that under hard acceleration the engine tilts back and causing a larger gap in the exhaust.. once you reach a smoother cruising speed the gap minimizing. That's my guess. Perhaps you can have a local exhaust shop take a look and get a quote/diagnosis.
hey there, I have the same problem with my 2005 Camry SE 4cylinder. what size is the pipe please? I did some research and they say 2 1/8" original pipe so I plan to go with 2 1/4" flex pipe. But in your video, the size of flex pipe is almost 2 1/2". Can you clarify it. Many thanks
I don't recall the sizing, but you're probably correct on the 2 1/2" being used. It was probably the only sizing available at the time. With a 1/4" difference I usually crimp the end of the piping to minimize the gap before welding. Hope this helps answer your question.
Looking back at the video. The original piping looks to be bigger than 2 1/8". Also.. it's possible the front section is smaller than the sdction after the flex, so you may have to accomodate for that as well.
@@UncleTinman Thank you sir, I think I should go with 2 1/4" flex pipe so the gap is not too big and it easier for me to keep it in center when welding. Your video very helpful by the way.
Does this cause it to rumble and hood shake more when ac or back defrost is on as well? And also vibrating/rumbling/roaring when braking. It's more worse when the ac or back defrost is on while braking.
@@afsah3305 power steering being loose probably cause you have full steering power now. Damaged flex pipe could cause an engine light usually related to o2 sensor readings.

What were you spraying on the exhaust pipe at the end? Were you just using Brake cleaner to get any junk off the exhaust?
Oh. That was tremclad high heat paint to help protect it from rusting.

You're not obligated to get it fixed at the shop. It's better to get it checked out to ensure it's not a safety concern.

@@UncleTinman I don't think it's leaking just rattling when in gear and stopped, I'm hoping the flex pipe is making that noise first

Just had this happen my flange on my tailpipe is leaking
Yes.. that's a common issue with toyota mufflers as well.. I usually just cut the flange off and make it straight pipe.
Does this cause it to rumble and hood shake more when ac or back defrost is on as well?

Its possible to rumble more as the AC would have an extra strain or load on the engine.
