    Rivers are actually not so great as borders, since they sometimes change course. That causes a whole argument about whether the border still follows the original course or the new one
    That leads to one of 2 bad outcomes. Either the river is no longer the border (even though everyone has become used to it being the border) or someone just lost land to someone else
    Mountain ridges are much better since they are not easily crossed and they rarely move over time

    • @rateeightx
      @rateeightx 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah, But the problem with Mountain Ranges is, compared to rivers, They're relatively rare, So in some cases your choices for borders are: A river, Or a completely arbitrary line. In such cases, Personally I'd go with the river just because I think it looks nicer, plus rivers don't often shift by _too_ much, so even if one side does wind up losing land it's usually nothing catastrophic.

    Venezuelan here: this has already been brought to attention in other places of the interweb but this "10 million voters 95% of whom said yes" figure is really being called into question because there was not actually a lot of people going to the voting centers, they were mostly empty. And this government isn't exactly known for being fair with elections. So they claim that 95% of voters said yes but most likely these figures are fabricated by the government so they can say the have popular support and just continue with their interests as usual.
    On top of that, I've heard a lot of people who work for the government say that they were forced by the military police to vote yes "or else"; and some reports of people being held at schools (we use schools as voting centers, not sure how common that is worldwide so I'm mentioning it just to be safe) and were not allowed to leave until they voted yes.

      I wish it were otherwise, but Guyana doesn't stand much of a chance, jungle or no jungle. They're a young country of less than a million with little to no army, no military tradition and no serious support from abroad.
      In contrast, Vietnam is and always has been an exceptionally militaristic country with a long history of thwarting invasions. When they fought the US, the North Vietnamese already had decades of experience from their recent wards against the Japanese and the French. They were highly motivated by ideology and nationalism, and received ample support from the USSR and (initially) China.
      Jungles alone aren't going to hand Guyana a victory here.

    • @junovzla
      @junovzla 9 месяцев назад +3

      I think Venezuela isn't going to be successful but not because of jungles specifically. We have them jungles too and I'm sure the military more or less knows how to deal with them. The thing is that there's a lot of shit going foul with Venezuela rn and if we try to actually invade another country it's going to be much worse for us.
      I guess it's just me hoping that we don't do anything because I know it will be bad lol.

    I don´t think Guyana will stand alone. Brazil will not stand by, and has already sent troops to the border. Territories of The Netherlands and France are way too close for comfort. The US will not want an anti-west regime to expand. And much of the oil from Guyana is extracted by China, so China also won´t want this either.

      Brazil is here too keep peace and mediate between Venezuela and Guyana. Maduro and Lula have great relationship so that would be alright. Dutch territories arent close to the region. France has not so much to do with this. The US also spend a lot of money and negotiation to the Maduro government, and they won't throw that all away. China is doing way more business in Venezuela than in Guyana, but I think China will play the same role as Brazil.

    Greetings from Guyana. My grandpa migrated to england when Guyana gained independence. Id like to visit the British sometime in the future, for my masters dergree perhaps, but the situation does look Grim. I hope all works out well with no violence, becaue there is a 60:1 ratio. If 1 or 2 % of the Venezuelan population decided to relocate themselves there, they would be larger than the whole population. And we speak English, and are not aware at all much about spanish culture and so. We are mostly culturally tied to the caribbean, the USA and England.
    Fun Fact: Guyana has had ~700 000 in population for the last 30 years. Thats bcuz of migration. In Total, the population of people that have migrated from the country is probably significatly larger than those that have stayed, about 1.3Mil. Guyana has had one of the highest suicide rates and one of the highest brain drain rates in the world.

      Hi, Greetings from Venezuela. If it makes you feel better I think that if we actually try to invade it's going to be equally as bad for us (if not worse) than it will be for y'all. Venezuela's current internal situation is very grim and it will only get worse if we take action, because the US will be handing out sanctions freely, and our economic situation is gonna get hurt real bad and we're gonna have another 2018 event (for context in 2018 a good portion of us were basically right next to dying of hunger because there was quite the food shortage and and inflation rates were quite intense).
      So yeah, I don't think the government is stupid enough to actually take action, and if they do it's gonna be terrible for the both of us.

    Guyana is dealing with Exxon-Mobile because they (Guyana) do not have the experience or expertise to get the oil themselves. Venezuela's oil production has dropped significantly and continues to drop, so if Venezuela does take over and Exxon-Mobile is no longer involved, the odds are that the oil will not be accessed at all for a while. It is difficult to imagine any oil company getting involved in a venture that will require a substantial amount of money to access when this can be seized at any time by a government that has done this repeatedly before.

    Technically, all of the land from the Orinoco River to the Amazon River is the Guyana Shield, so there are 5 Guyanas: Spanish (Venezuela), Portuguese (Part of Brazil), British (Guyana), Dutch (Suriname) and French. And also, the Region between the Esequibo River and Venezuela was part of the Spanish viceroyalty of New Granada, until the UK took a chunk of Suriname from the Dutch and ocuppied the area from Venezuela. I do not endorse any effort to retake it or the Venezuelan government, but this is another prime example of the British messing up borders.

    I feel like you put too much focus on oil company controlling Guyana. It's just getting help, like how China puts investment into African countries. They don't have the money or influence/tech to do it so they need an outside source to help. Either you get an outsider to help and get a good share or you just don't make any money. Guyana as a country has become much richer over the recent few years thanks to this deal. While Venezuela just gets more and more poor

    "Is killing soldiers in a territorial conflict really worth sticking it to a big corporation? I don't think so, anyway this country is incredibly poor and people die here really young and all foreigners are wealthy in comparison."
    For the record, I agree that 'sticking it to exxon' will make no material difference to the people, and the land grab is just a corrupt government trying to shore up power, but no one can deny the amount of suffering that goes on in this region due to these corporations. We can at least understand how people in this region are convinced that the soon to be war is between Venezuela and Exxon.

    Guyana has:
    Good infrastructure
    Good reserves (currency, food, etc)
    Access to US weapons, training, and intelligence support
    Access to British weapons, training, and intelligence support,
    A stable economy that can support war..
    And
    Muslims. Guyana has AlOT of Muslims. These people don’t quite even when they are in the back foot..
    which they are not.
    Venezuela is going kinda nuts right now. Either it loses fast to a modern army…, or it losses in how many generations and understands what both America and Russia learned in Iraq and Afghanistan about Islam.

    Suriname also has a border dispute with Guyana.
    If the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro decides tomorrow to annex the Essequibo area following a military action following a referendum, the Guyanese will be faced with a taste of their own medicine. The Venezuelans have been claiming the Essequibo area for decades, because they assume that during the colonial administration of the British - in what is now called Guyana - the aforementioned area was confiscated by the German Robert Hermann Schomburgk by drawing up false maps. . Venezuela was certainly no match for the British militarily at that period, so the area was added to Guyana. It must be clear that the British also wanted a so-called foothold on the mainland of South America. On our side too, the British have done everything they can to steal territory from the other colonizers in the North Sea. The fact that part of present-day Guyana also belonged to the colony of Suriname can still be deduced from the Dutch names in certain places. But it was the same Robert Hermann Schomburgk who ascended the Corentijn and also after this journey drew up a false map for the British, in which he indicated that the Coeroeni Cutari was the upper course of the Corantijn River. He had not seen the truly much larger stream of water that we call the Upper Corantijn. Later, upon further investigation by the British Barrington Brown, the Upper Corantijn - which he called the New River - turned out to be the real upper course, creating the so-called Tigri Delta, located between Coeroeni, Cutari, Upper Corantijn and the Acarai Mountains, without there was no doubt that it should be regarded as Surinamese territory. However, the British wanted nothing to do with Barrington Brown's findings. In 1969, before our political independence, President Forbes Burnham of Guyana, which became independent in 1966, decided to occupy the Tigri Delta by means of military force. As is known, the Netherlands, which still had to defend Suriname as a part of the empire, did not intervene. Due to this annexation and the violent actions of Guyana, Suriname still has a border dispute with that country, just like Venezuela has with the Guyanese over the Essequibo area. The Guyanese government is now screaming bloody murder and is seeking support all over the world against a possible Venezuelan attack to take over the area militarily, but Suriname should absolutely not side with Guyana when it comes to the Essequibo issue. Guyana has occupied part of our territory since 1969, and does everything if the area belongs to it. We may be part of the English-speaking club CARICOM, which immediately supported Guyana, but we have been robbed by the Guyanese for more than 54 years. They have taken our territory hostage with military force and we should not accept that for a moment and certainly should not side with them when it concerns the Essequibo issue between Venezuela and the Guyanese. The fact that the Venezuelans now want to take back the area, if necessary with the use of the much stronger Venezuelan army, of course has everything to do with the large oil and natural gas reserves that have been discovered off the coast of the aforementioned area. This border dispute could have enormous consequences for security in our area, which can be described as the Guyanas. An area that runs from the Orinoco to the Oyapock. It is understandable that Venezuela may wish to use military resources. Isn't that what the Guyanese did to us in 1969, when The Hague did everything it could to get the police unit out of the Tigri area and was under former officer Lapre. The Netherlands did not want to have trouble with NATO partner Great Britain, that was clear at the time. But we now live in the 21st century and must not forget that we have a Ukraine and a Gaza, where major powers commit actions that can cause changes within geopolitics, including on our continent, when business and major financial interests come into play. This is about oil, that's what it was about in Iraq too. We can always talk about green energy and electric cars, but oil is still of great and survival importance for most economies and that is why the Venezuelan-Guyanese border conflict can still cause a lot of trouble for all of us. And especially if world powers get involved. Is oil a blessing or a curse? Unfortunately, this will also be expressed or expressed in this region.
