Making Interstellar BETTER

  • Set in a near-future Earth facing an environmental catastrophe, the story follows a former NASA pilot, played by Matthew McConaughey, who embarks on a space mission through a wormhole near Saturn to find a new habitable planet for humanity. The film explores themes of love, time dilation, and the resilience of the human spirit. As the crew encounters various challenges, including the effects of relativity, they strive to ensure the survival of humanity in the face of an impending global crisis. I wrote that.

This movie seems like Christopher Nolan responding to the long standing criticism that his characters are flat and his approach is sterile in emotion, so he just cranked the love theme up to 1000 and still missed the point.
I’ve always felt this movie is a 6/10 at best and I’m glad you had the balls to say it

The movie jumped the shark for me when she basically said what if love travels through time and space like gravity and because of that maybe existent love traveling through space we should ignore good data. That's the sort of shit that gets you duct taped to a chair for the rest of the mission.

    1. Love is not a ridiculous thing to be constantly contemplating when you’re on the last ship ever to leave Earth, with all your family and friends left behind, in search of an entirely new planet since yours will soon be dead. If the extinction of our species was imminent, we would all be thinking much more about Love once the science started failing us (I.e. not figuring out the equation for gravity, or a new viable planet)
ALSO, she ends up being right about Love being the only thing that transcends space and time. Cause Cooper reached back through time in the Black Hole (4th dimension) to hold Brand’s hand. Brand only starts talking so much about Love after that shimmering space hand reached out and held her own hand. Like who wouldn’t be a little crazy after that?
    2. You seem to think the movie would be better if the director gave us more timeline jumps, flashbacks, etc. with Murph and with building up the reveal for big secrets.
But the WHOLE POINT of the movie is timing. The first 95% of the movie is told in a linear storyline, meaning we experience things as the characters experience them. The famous scene where Cooper watches his kids grow up in the 20 years he just missed would not be nearly as emotional had the director chosen to show flashbacks of Murph’s adolescence/early adulthood. It was so effective because the stress and sadness and surprise of that moment was felt along with the main character in the moment he was experiencing it. The only time we see any flashbacks throughout the entire movie is when Cooper is in the black hole, because that’s the only place where time works in the 4th dimension, not the 2nd. Nolan purposefully told a linear story leading up to this so that he could more easily demonstrate how he thought time could work in a black hole. Which leads me to my last point.
    3. You argue that the ending with Cooper in the black hole shouldn’t have been included at all and should have been inferred.
But like what? That’s the whole point of science fiction/space movies, to see what we have only seen through a telescope or through models/theories. Literally everyone who thinks at all has wondered what it would be like in a black hole. So Christopher Nolan and his little brother latched onto one of many theories about black holes and fit it into their story. I get that the scene is confusing the first time watching, but it’s confusing because it’s supposed to be (like inception, if the explanation was too simple, it’d ruin the complex depth of the movie.) This is one of very few movies ever to try and depict what it’s like to be in a black hole, which is what made it so exciting to a lot of people. And if you watch it a couple times, you begin to understand everything fully and appreciate it a lot more.
Final word: I get you think it’s too slow of a movie, and the dialogue is dry, and you think it’s poorly directed. But it seems like you’re applying your own opinions of how a movie should be made to your viewing experience. Instead, maybe try to view the movie from the perspective of the director. Start asking yourself, “what is this director/actor trying to convey to me? What’s the message that’s intended?” If you do that, you’ll enjoy movies a whole lot more.

      1. I never said Love is a ridiculous thing to think about when you're ship is the last of mankind. I said that's it's a stupid and forced way to tie the end to the beginning. They can talk about it, but that's all they talk about. It gets repitative, and on a SCIENTIFIC mission, love is something that sciencists shouldn't be putting into equations. That's dumb. Also, they DO start talking about love before the wormwhole. So you misreprested my point.
      2. Again, I never said this. I never said we should have timeline jumps. I actually literally said, I don't want that. I want to follow 1 story from start to finish. NOT jumping between them or showing flashbacks. Showing what Murph did in class wouldn't have been a flashback, it would've been a linear scene. Which fits right into your theory about Nolans timeline. Again, as I say, the point of any film is to help an audience feel the emotion of a moment. SO experiencing the moment as a character does can detract from the emotion when the film tries to tell the same thing twice. We don't need to see Murphs AND Coopers reaction to the same information. One is enough. I also NEVER argue that we have flashbacks to the twenty years Cooper misses. I argue that if you follow Murph, we can understand her better. Or if we follow Cooper, we can understand him better. That is a scene that works because it DOESN'T show information twice. Something I could've touched on to prove my point about them being stranded on earth, but I thought that was obvious. So once again, you misrepresented my point.
      3. I didn't exclusively argue that we don't see the ending at all. I think it COULD help the nonsensical ending by NOT showing the things that make no sense. Saying that the point of the black hole scene is to being confusing is insane. It literally undercut the ENTIRE film because it IS confusing. A movie about science shouldn't end on a hair brain theory that actively makes less sense the more it shows. So, once again, you misrepresented my point.
Final word: I once again, never said the film is too slow or the dialogue is too dry or that it's poorly directed. I would be insane to say it's poorly directed, it's gorgeous, something you must of missed. Along with everything else you missed. I said that the film has issues with it's story not landing poorly, the characters feeling robotic or completely underdeveloped, and the ending being utterly disasterous for the film. Of course, this is my opinion. Of course, this is your opinion too. The point of this video is try to and understand Nolan's perspective and help to see where it fell apart. If you ask yourself what the actor/director is trying to convey I don't think there are great answers here. I do apperciate that you actually giving feedback though. Most people are just yelling with zero substance. However you've not only misrepresented my entire video, but everything I was trying to communicate. With this feedback I think it's back to the drawing board and try to make things even more clear.
