    Great video, Vault has been a big mystery to me for some time, and now I can see how I can apply it to my situation (I am really the only person to use Inventor in my office so I didn't think Vault was of any use). We do have the spreadsheet to allocate numbers at the moment, but I can see how the auto allocate part numbers in Vault could work just as well.

    Honestly think I'd be considering giving up on Inventor if it wasn't for these tutorials. Cheers Neil!

    Howdy Neil, from NC, USA. Many many many thanks for all your vids that helped get me my life-changing job. Cheers, sir. Couldn't you help remedy the multi-site same part number conflict by assigning each site as a workgroup? And then integrate the workgroup label into the part number? Or is that not practical? Either way, keep the vids coming, I watch them all!

      You're welcome, congrats on your life changing job!
      The thing with the workgroup suffix is that nobody wants a workgroup suffix in their part number. Yea it'll work and probs would get around the problem, but I'm not about to suggest to a company that they change their entire part numbering to work around a stupid software issue... I'd be forever answering questions from non-CAD staff why our part numbers now have random characters in them, and what if products aren't region specific, they've now got a region designation in their part number, which again just doesn't make sense. It's a workaround but it's definitely not workable in my experience.

      TFI my friend, that is an excellent point. It's frustrating how certain departments will have nothing to do with a solution if it is in any way inconvenient or foreign to them. But I see what you mean, especially with part numbers, if anyone in house or even a client wanted to decipher a part number to better understand the serialization of the part, I could see how it would throw a wrench in their cogs so to speak. Then even if you tried to throw another systematic numbering in for region, you end up with user-end issues of people using the wrong part-number scheme. Ah the delicious benefits of working with humans. Good luck, my man. I look forward to the patches autodesk dishes out to fix all the bugs and bullocks you excel at sniffing out. Rock on.

    As always, nice tutorial!I haven't tried this yet, but if you really had to take out a block of numbers, could you possibly do it by changing the lower end of the part number range? But once numbers are taken out, it may no let you do that.... IDK yet.

    Hi Neil, Thanks for all the vids. Question on this one. We are considered going from basic to workgroup. If you select Free text, does that influence the numbering scheme the same as the FAB-DVD ? The company I work for wants the job number in each filename. So job '2525'(freetext?)-'GA' or 'A' o r'D'(dropdown) 0001(sequence). The company wants each GA (general arrangement top level assy) and A (assembly within top level) and D (detail) to begin at 0001 per job number '2525' (freetext). The designs we do are a one and done scenario and never reused and rarely copied.

    So the best way to get each part you make on a project to have consecutive numbers is to skip the naming convention at first, create parts, and then use rename wizard to do it for you? When you use the rename wizard to change the naming/numbering scheme of existing parts, will that information communicate with assemblies that might be using those parts? I could see that being a nightmare of unimaginable proportion if it breaks that link.

    Great video Neil.
    We are just transitioning to Vault Pro right now. Is there a way to automatically change the part number based on the file type?
    Ex. A0001 for an .iam and P0001 for an ipt.

    Good video Neil,
    Any idea what happens with the Frame generator and pipe generated files? The frame generator files are my biggest pain in vault. No one bothers to change the default files names and then complains that Vault wont let them check the file in.

    Hi Neil and thanks for all of your tutorials! I have tried to find possibilities to generate unique code for Stock Number in Inventor or Vault but I couldn't. I need this unique code for creating barcode for all parts in my storage and connect with ERP.
    Do you have any Idea or suggestion?

    Is there a way to set something like this up without Vault?

    What happens if a user generates a part number and then when the save as screen is displayed the user takes it upon themselves to increase the part number from the one given (they have a lucky number or something, who knows what happens in the the human brain). When the vault reaches whatever number the user decided to change it to will vault overwrite the existing part with that number the user created or will it skip it or just plain blow the vault up and cause all sorts of apocalyptic problems?

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  7 лет назад +2

      As much as sometimes we all wish the Vault would blow up and disintegrate into a blubbering and fizzing mess of ones and zeros, the answer is actually... it depends... haha
      If you have 'unique file names' turned on, the Vault will just refuse to check your file in because someone already has put a file into the Vault with that number.
      If you don't have unique file names turned on, it then depends on which Vault folder you put the file into...!
      If you put the file into the same folder as the one with the same name, you'll have been warned about that aggro well before you get to the point of checking in.
      If you put it into a different folder, you'll be fine, until there comes a point whereby you've got them both in your workspace and Inventor gets confused, then it'll ask you about it.

    Hello I have a problem, a friend of mine and I work on a project but if we share the assemblies together, the content center's components are 'unresolved'. What can you do here?

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  7 лет назад

      Depends how you're sharing the files with each other. If you're emailing files, use pack n go and include the library files in the settings. Alternatively, just give each other your Content Center folders. In theory Content Center files are read only so you could recreate any missing files from your own Content library, but the easiest option is to just use pack n go and make sure to grab all the references.

      Just had a thought, this might be a little too complicated for what you need, but watch this and see if you can maybe do something with it ruclips.net/video/ooonFj9RDis/видео.html
