The best part numbering scheme I've ever used in CAD weldments/assemblies was this simple: (2 digit year)-(two number month)- (3 digit consecutive number)- (3 digit consecutive weldment number) ... Assembly/Weldment example: 23-11-001 example of weldment piece parts: 23-11-001-001
