Despite badly losing Gohan still saved everyone as he was able to hold on just long enough for his father to show up.
Gohan was strong enough to do damage to recoome as he was near equal strength to vegeta at the time. Problem was gohan lacked fighting experience.

Gohan power level here must of been 28,000 to 30,000. For him to be keeping a 45000, recoome at bay, while krillin was 25,000 and vegeta was 35,000
